The kind of intellect,force of personality one hesrs in Hofmann and the best of Rubinstein in his livid headstrong 1950's headstrong years! This kind of musicality can barely be heard. Its almost too much. Vociferous, leonine,so powerful its a bit frightening. Gilels too sometimes evinces this kind of sheer power and immediacy of utterance. Oh dear heavens. Early recordings are the best because his source of inspiration was Neuhaus and of course Wagner.Later when Neuhaus died became very academico but there were the times in which Materialistic thinking was spread all around world.Until 1989....
