    I once had a mouse find it's way into my shifter assembly on my '06 350Z and got trapped between the linkage and interior shifter bezel. Found out it because it smelled like rotting meat. Took apart my interior to find the smell and found a rotting mouse corpse, luckily no damage just horrible smell for weeks.

    Working at a dealership up here in MN, we see the rodent thing several times a year. When insurance is involved, they typically want the entire harness replaced due to the other things that can potentially happen (like a car fire or ongoing electrical issues). Also, rodents are attracted to the wiring in vehicles due to things like peanut oil and other "sweet" type ingredients that are in the wire coatings themselves (thanks to you, you big greenies). Since the 90's, manufacturers have been working on ways to reduce the use of petroleums when building a car. I have really enjoyed watching your vids. I was very impressed that you personally laid everything out there for everyone to see. I'm also a "C" type, but have been moving more towards an "A" type the older I get and the more I took on professionally.

    So sorry to hear about the damage. Same thing happened to my wife's 2006 350Z Roadster. The car has less than 30K on it. It is her dream car. A chipmunk got on top of the gas tank and chewed through the harness. I was investigating why the gas gauge had failed....I figured the sending unit in the tank had failed, but when I pulled the service cover for the fuel pump....surprise!!! Sending unit wires chewed clean through, with one of the fuel pump wires chewed half way through. I had seen the chipmunk around the car before, but it didn't dawn on me that he was living under the car. There were shelled bird seed hulls on top of the gas tank where he was raiding the bird feeder for food. They are cute, but the little punks can do some damage.

    Hey Matt, sorry about the damage :(
    We had mice get into a bin full of Christmas decorations that we kept inside a utility room off of our garage. They had babies inside the bin, urinated all over everything, pooped inside my entire tool set. We found our revenge in the form of an electronic rat/mouse death machine. It's called the "Rat Zapper" and it worked wonders. There is no mercy to be found in this route, however, so if the wife or kids are tender towards tiny animals, you may want to warn them.

  • @dlee6985
    @dlee6985 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing I learned after having mice issues in the past. Do not underestimate their ability to find a way in somewhere where it wants to go. Even if the company says mice don't like the taste of the plastic, they will still chew through it if they want to get in bad enough. Everytime I thought I went overkill with deterents, they still found a way in. I store my summer car in a barn, which is the worst place for mice, as well as moisture/humidity so horrible place to store a car but I'm poor and it's cheap, but the owner uses some sort of device that gives off some sort of audible sound that seems to keep the mice away. Haven't had any problems the 2 winters I've stored it there so it seems to be working. The showcase is cool though. I hope it does the job and you don't have anymore mice issues.

    Took forever to find this video again after seeing it originally 4 years ago. In case you didn't know there have been multiple class action lawsuits regarding rodents eating wiring as most manufacturers have deliberately started using soy and food based ingredients in wiring insulation citing "green renewable" materials. All lawsuit attempts have failed and knowing this almost every manufacturer since 2011 has turned to using soy wiring in vehicle's as a result. They are simply capitalizing on the problem by adding "food" products throughout entire parts of the vehicle. I've even heard of specific parts having to be replaced on a regular basis because mice, rats and squirrels are literally feeding off your car and chewing harnesses, ducting and molding right down to nothing. Soy was just the beginning, manufacturers are now turning to rice, wheat, cellulose and Ford is now even collaborating with Heinz for their tomato skins for use in their vehicles. To top it off they have even taken to spraying soy oil as a lubricant to pull harnesses at the factory. That and the simple fact these companies won't use soy in airbag and crucial sensor wiring goes to show manufacturers know exactly how to manipulate this to their advantage.

    Hey Matt, I'm a former pest control guy. I'd put a ring of lockable bait boxes secured to pavers around your wash bay and service regularly with rodenticide. kinda like a first line of defense if you will.

      @ObsessedGarage 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought a bunch of those. Any suggestions on how to secure them?

    • @albertkoops9653
      @albertkoops9653 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to use small concrete pavers that I would drill through then bolt the bait station onto the paver. Or you could use braided steel line run it through the entry holes and secure them to the tree's or wood pillars by your wash bay.

    Same thing happened on my TT-RS. This is a common problem thanks to green policies. All wiring is made out of biodegradable/edible materials. It's a widespread issue.

    Also, regarding some of the wack comments .... you seem to be taking care of your family, taking care of your finances, taking care of your clients/work..... so why not enjoy all the materialistic things you can.... whats the point in life if you dont ??? And the mere fact that you got rid of your M3, shows that you have no life long "attachment" to material things...the way i see it.... lifes a journey, not a sprint..... and your doing just fine ..... and your making alot of ppl happy in their lives..... family, web gurus etx.... so keep up the good work man, and do you....

    That sucks, mice suck, 8,600$ wiring harnesses suck but it has to be done right or it would bother you.

    A professional pest control guy will help big time. They know where to put proper traps/baits that will work 100%. The problem with mice is they are territorial so will keep coming back unless you eradicate them. A garage may not help anyways, they always find their way inside somehow. Good luck Matt, I feel for you man, that'd be a devastating blow to have damage to your car like that.

      I agree. People assume putting walls up solves the problem. It may not just like this bubble may not.

      Obsessed Garage Precisely, the little buggers will get through solid brick!! Comments regarding cats are also correct but unless you are a cat person, which clearly you're not, it's not an option. Besides in a property as large as yours appears to be you'd need three😂

    ouch man. that really sucks with the mice. happened in our garage too with my car. but it wasn't nearly as bad. Just had some mice eat the headlight wires on my car and they made one of my cars in storage their home and all died under the seats...all 12 of them.
    We set up traps around the garage that used bait. It was a white container that flipped closed and crushed the mice as they went to try to eat the bait Goodluck with the fix though

    What are the chances of this happening to a supercar? This is ridiculous! This is the last thing that could've gone wrong with your GT3. It's gonna be fine. You will, eventually, get a replacement for this car, which is gonna be far superior. Stay positive.

    I recently left a comment about using mothballs in envelopes made of galvanized screen wire and putting them in the engine compartment. It works better than anything I've ever seen. And there is an odor in the engine compartment when the mothballs are there. I take the mothballs out when I'm going to drive my car. The air that pushes around the engine clears all of the smell away in seconds. You won't find a better solution than mothballs inside galvanized envelopes. I've been doing for over 20 years without a problem. If you're worried about the mothball dust make some aluminum foil trays to place the mothballs on. If anyone can find an easier fix than mothballs I want to know. You can pick up mothballs at any Walmart .

    Another thing you can do. You might not like it but Mice hate the soap Irish Springs. Get it in bar form, and place it in anywhere. My best friend places one at all four corners of his trailer for storage during the winter on an acreage and has not mice come summertime. And my dad buts a couple in his hot rod during winter storage and has no problems with nests or chewed wires. and it smells like Irish Springs :-) so i'm not complaining.
