  • It’s never easy when you experience pain, but there’s no question it’s more difficult than ever when doctors can’t figure out the cause. When that happens, you need a doctor detective - one who is willing to take the time to help you figure out what’s going on and most importantly - what to do about it.
We’re talking in this episode about medical mysteries - what it looked like for one young woman with pain so bad she had to drop out of school, how she found her way to help and how others can too - especially when answers seem difficult or impossible to come by.
Anna Greer and Dr. Niteesh Bharara, Director of Regenerative Medicine at VSI have tips and an important reminder for patients to never give up hope in your search for answers and a pain-free life.

What to do when you have scoliosis and this syndrome at the same time. They say my 17-year-old daughter should have surgery for scoliosis, the Bertolotti syndrome is IIIb, we haven't started the physiotherapy yet but we are very distressed because from having a healthy and happy life everything has permanently changed. What life awaits my daughter now?

Hey there, I'm a 38 y/o male who is having L5-S1 fusion with Dr. Jenkins in New York at the end of the month. I have something that's a weird combo of a Type II and a Type III. But anyway, minor scoliosis is one of the symptoms of my presentation of BS. There is a major instability at the base of my spine on the right, so all the muscles around that tighten up to protect it, which pulls my spine out of alignment. My hip and shoulder heights are wildly out of sync with one another, easy enough to see in the mirror when I care to look. Just want to make sure your daughter's diagnosis of scoliosis is not just a symptom of her Bertolotti joint! And good luck to you both! I had a "bad back" my whole life but had my first true, nasty BS attack in 2018 and I've been hopping from pain office to pain office until just last year when I finally found the local surgeon who is an expert on BS. I'm glad you're getting her looked at early! You don't want this kind of thing to sit around unaddressed.

Felt acute pain during my commando training. I was diagnosed with bertolotti syndrome type 2a . Doctor advised me to keep my back straight every time. Although there is stiffness in right side of my low back but it’s manageable.

Just received a Bertolotti's diagnosis today and I was prescribed physiotherapy and pain meds. I have had progressive pain for 4 years now. A pinching pain when I arch my back, and soreness in my right hip. Usually at its worst everything I nap or sleep on my right. How I wish stem cell therapy was possible in my home country, Uganda.
      Thanks for sharing this video.
