This is head and shoulders the best video tutorial on a piece of software that I have ever experienced - whether on TH-cam or Udemy. Ross, you worked at a pace that beginners could follow. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Ross, thank you for this outstanding tutorial on the essentials of Descript. I thought the unhurried pace and thorough explanation of the powerful capabilities of Descript was right on. Your use of chapters for the major topics is an added bonus which increases the effectiveness of the tutorial. Thanks again for a great job and my new go-to tutorial for Descript.
This video is awesome. I just completed seeing this course without break and good part of this video is that it doesn't distracts you with any ads. I fell in love with descript after seeing this free course. its worth 1000 bucks. This is "GOAT" course to learn Descript and final destination to know and learn descript. Thanks Ross 👍👏
That is amazing, thank you!!! BTW I think Descript improved something since you recorded this. Now the option that you mention at ~ min 22 about the "delete and replace by gap" option no longer replace the video by black frames, it deletes the audio but not the video. So it makes it possible not to hear the filler words without getting a "jump" in the video. that's my favorite option to get rid of the filler words.
Hi, I'm Tricia you're newest fan. :) Thank you so much for such an easy-to-understand tutorial. I SO want to be empowered to edit my own videos and not depend on an editor. And yes, Descript is frustrating to me. But it's also AMAZING, with the AI b-roll, especially. The clips are so great. So I'm plowing through. I'm thrilled to see that you have a course and private sessions...I was just thinking to myself: I need someone I can contact to ask questions on this when I'm stumped and POOF! There you are! So, thank you!
Hi Tricia, welcome! I’m glad you found me and my channel! I hear that allll the time - that it’s amazing but frustrating which is why my service exists :) Absolutely, I hope to see you in the course or in a tutoring session!
I’m enjoying your tutorial. 😊I would like to share my iPad screen as a whiteboard and use my Apple Pencil to do grammar videos. Is there anyway I could share my iPad while plugged in to my Mac while recording with Descript? I’ve used it before with Evmux by first starting a Quicktime iMovie and then selecting my iPad and then shared the QuickTime movie window on screen.
Thanks for the topic idea! I whipped up this video tutorial answering your question: th-cam.com/video/ZROUixdoulE/w-d-xo.html Let me know if this works for you or if something was missing.
I am going to give this a try tomorrow. I saw your video online before even seeing your reply to my question. Thank you so much I will keep you posted. ❤
Hi Ross, Superb tutorial. I watched your most recent one too. I am planning on joining your community once my funds permit a year subscription. I have just spent hours playing around with my first video, for my first ever client. Now I was testing the publish web link to share my progress and get feedback... a good thing I tested the link first before showing my client: it's stuck at 76% rendering for two hours. I had to refresh every 15 minutes to that point, now nothing does (refresh, reboot laptop). I opened it on my phone with a different Google account and the page opened at 76% too. I have no clue how it all works. I can't afford a one on one this or next month. Can you provide guidance please? Video is long: 2:44hrs. But it's only captions, filler words removed and a faulty transition animation that has been removed but still shows 😐
I have retried another composition without all the modifications (just a template captions) and it worked well. I hope it won't happen again with the final product, but I'll assume that it was just a random bug. Thank you for your time reading all of the above. I'll be going through most of your content in the following weeks
Hi Max, thank you! And thats awesome, I look forward to seeing you in the community :) For the stuck upload, I'd recommend to make a slight change to the project then hit Publish->Update. This will start the process over but often times this will fix the issue. Let me know if that works!
Oh I responded before reading your follow up, sounds like you already got it working. Thats great! Yea its a glitch that happens sometimes especially with long projects like that.
thank you for this. Do any of your videos explain templates? I want to put the same scene for chapters but the templates function doesnt work as i expecte to put the drag the same scene layout "slide" for every chapter. do you tutor 1 on 1?

You can change the start of a scene by putting your mouse on the vertical line between scenes next to the scene number in the timeline. Your mouse will turn into left and right facing arrows. If you click and drag to the left, you cause that scene to start earlier i.e. before the first words from that scene. Let me know if that answers what you’re looking for!

Ross that was a really great, detailed tutorial! I had one quick question ... When using the captioning command to put the words on the video as they are being said, is there a way for multiple lines (3 or 4) to show up on the screen? I was thinking of reading a book I wrote on a black screen and it would be nice to have several lines on the page at a time while it is captioning.
Thank you! And absolutely, you will need to resize the caption layer's box. Click on the words box then resize it using the little dots that appear on the corners. To fit more lines, simply make it taller until it fits 3 or 4 lines. Hope this helps!
Yes, Descript got a major overhaul in June. I'm planning a remake of this entire tutorial later this week because another big update is coming on Wednesday.
Long answer but basically, Descript creates an audio file with the noise cancelled. So you then have the raw audio and the treated audio overlapping. At 100% intensity, you should just hear the treated audio. When you dial down the intensity, it blends the two tracks and sometimes creates that echo. Obviously, it's not supposed to happen but sometimes just going to Window -> Reload will fix the issue. If not, try closing and restarting it. There's a few other things to try as well but that should resolve it 80% of the time.
Sir, thanks for your easy to follow tutorial. I need to create multimodel content showing the transcript adjacent to the video. Is that possible? If so, can someone guide me please.
Yes, the best way to do that would be the Captions feature. Add the transcript to your video by adding a Captions layer then adjusting it until it looks how you want in terms of size, font, etc
Hi. 1 question, hope you can answer. I only need a video showing the text and tracking (highlighting) the text (like transcipting it) while text to speech reads synchronously. nothing else, its like a visual auto read noval. (like kindle whispersync a.k.a. read along, read aloud) .. so video should should whole text which fits to screen (like 1 page) but should continiously highlight the read part. Can descript do this ?
Yes absolutely! The feature you're looking for is Captions. You'll need to apply a caption layer to your video then resize the caption in the video to fill the whole screen. Then, customize the captions so it's the right font, size, etc including adding the effect where it'll highlight the read part.
