I agree with what others have said...The mom and sister most likely didn't know all of it and rationalized it as 'well, it's his life'. They were most likely living off of him and benefitting (i.e. paid bills, etc). Finally, when the news came out from these women courageous enough to come forward, they were hurt and shook as well.
