Taichi Saotome is an onnagata, a man that specializes in playing women's roles. While the form of theater he's in, taishu engeki, doesn't technically require men to play female roles (unlike kabuki, which is strictly men only), it's still pretty common. Historically, Japanese theatrical arts such as noh, kabuki, or bunraku were restricted to men only, so while a woman can play this role, it's not considered strange at all for a man to do it instead. Besides, onnagata are incredibly popular.

Originally the white base mask was made with lead, but after the discovery that it poisoned the skin and caused terrible skin and back problems for the older geisha towards the end of the Meiji Era, it was replaced with rice powder.

you do realize that this is a historical performance, right? and that if it were a historically correct video of say romeo and juliet that there wouldnt be any actual females.... they'd all be men. it was a huge taboo for a woman to be involved in theater way back when.

色気、艶、しなやかさ、淑やかさ
全て兼ね備えていて感動しました。
何年も前から、時々無性に見たくなって何度も来てしまう動画。
この時の早乙女太一本当にすごい。

うわぁ。一年前のコメントと5年前のコメントにあれですが、めっちゃ分かるしどっちも素敵ですよね。
玉様は圧倒的だしちょっと神秘的で就職先女神みたいな感じですけど、猿之助さんの女形はなんと言うか、存在感もあるんだけどちょっと系統の違う感じで母性を感じます。
