You can hear this album 100 times and still find something new and funny that you never noticed before. I think because he's so witty and smart and quick that alot of jokes just go over your head, but then after hearing it a few times you begin to understand it. Brilliant.
I've had this album for years and it's truly one of his best because so much of it is spontaneous, totally off the top of his head, which is the way he preferred. He talked to the audience as if they were friends who were in on the joke, trusting that they would allow him the freedom to say whatever occurred to him.
In my humble opinion, Lenny Bruce is the most "essential" hero of the american culture during the previous century. It's amazing the depth of comprehension he had as an artist about everything he was experiencing. Post modern, intelligent, thinker, funny, pissed off, sarcastic, SIMPLE. And all this in a show!!! His life, his works...
Wow... I lost so much growing up. When I was a kid my dad introduced em to Lenny. It's been a long time and I forgot. Thanks for bringing back the memories and reminding me why I am such a subversive.
He played a small club near the airport when I was a kid growing up in Montreal. My Mom let me know in no uncertain terms that he used "dirty words" and was regarded as NOT safe for the "whole family". Got this on the vinyl issue then bought the CD set a few years ago. It's a classic. Edited but has the great parts to this concert. I don't like the other live complete concerts as much. On this one he was inspired and really into it...other live concerts I think his legal issues were really bringing him down and it showed in his performances. Long live Lenny....
I first heard about Lenny Bruce from the lyrics of the song "On the Sly" by Metric. I had no idea who this guy was and wanted to learn more about him. After some web searching i found my self on youtube laughing my ass off.
Matt Ashmore Don Freedman was the impresario, he had something to do with Jazz concerts promotion back then. I looked him up and as of 5-10 years ago he was still alive, in his late 80's or 90 ...
@MrKpussy sorry man, i have no transcript info. but hey - i lost the 2nd disc of this carnegie hall show so if you have it and if you get time post it on youtube. or shoot - send me a copy and i'll do it :))
Nice disclaimer. The parents turned me on to "I'm Not A Nut Elect Me" on Fantasy records , translucent red vinyl . Young and impressionable , I was absolutely knocked the fuck out with everything about him : Content , delivery , diversity with it all. This cat did NOT O D he was murdered. The pointlessness of his "obscenity" court cases , as the MC said at the start here "Lenny Bruce is not a sick comedian" he only mirrored and created humor from the sick society we still live in.
FYI I just found the 2nd disc from this show and have posted it for the people that are enjoying this performance. Here you go > th-cam.com/video/pCHXYEw9Mgc/w-d-xo.html . (and btw, i did NOT add advertising to my video of Lenny at Carnegie Part 1, that was done by youtube w/o my knowledge.)
Lenny was such a talented cat...but the drugs did him in. But he said alot of deep stuff, but could be very funny too. He was a product of his time. But you can see how so many guys today have radio and TV shows that are possible cause of the doors he opened. Guys like John Steward and Howard Stern and many others...
I am searching for any funny jokes, lines, or concepts by Lenny Bruce. I found none on this video and will continue to search. If anybody is aware of some of his humor I would love to find it, so lead me to his funny period.
This is what Middle Class America couldn't stand - Lenny Bruce entering the mainstream via Carnegie Hall. Had he remained an *underground" comedian, I doubt if he would have riled up the Establishment as much as he did. What Middle Class America has *always* been in denail and LB was dragging them out the door and forcing them to see what's outside their cozy little homes. ("Little houses, little boxes" - as ths ong of the day put it.)
I have found myself: concerned, contemplative, and in a state of debt. How did this come to be? I too, like the attendant Philistines, sauntered in, single file, unaware of the treachery awaiting, but now I clearly have only a modicum of uppercrust influence in whatever this Podunk may be. I desire and demand assistance, WHO ARE MY FACELESS DEBTORS?? PLEASE, TAKE THIS UP WITH FATHER! FATHER WILL MAINTAIN! HE IS THE LEVIATHAN. I DONE HATH INCURRED THE WRATH OF ORR. DO NOT! I FORBID YOU! NO FIN
I really hate to have to say this but I am not impressed by Lenny Bruce at all. I was expecting a lot more after hearing about how he was such an influence on comedians like Hicks and Carlin. But this is all just like rambling small=talk. I have been watching LB videos and haven't found any thing deep or really funny. The hardly laughing audience seems to agree.
Right. Maybe the audience was hardly laughing because they were letting his words sink in, Maybe they were afraid that what he was saying was true. Maybe you should change your name to Jim Crow. And maybe if I'm hardly laughing at you it's because I'm ROFLMAO at you.

I love him dearly. Thank you for this.

My grandparents saw Lenny Bruce live and was a big fan of his.

I first heard about Lenny Bruce from the lyrics of the song "On the Sly" by Metric. I had no idea who this guy was and wanted to learn more about him. After some web searching i found my self on youtube laughing my ass off.
I have this on CD. Do you have (or do you know anyone who has) the transcripts of the whole show? Thanks, anyway.
Was this concert in 1961?
Who is the MC? Great voice.

Is he snapping his fingers after he says something?
AAH! I want a video
Yes. Snapping his fingers.

You must have lost your senses.

Intro voice sounds like Johnny Cash

Society today needs a Lenny Bruce to shake up these SJW fools.

You're the kind of fool who says Shakespeare was overrated. There would be no Carlin or Hicks without Lenny, you ignorant ahole.

Before Lenny comedians were making knock knock jokes.
Before Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce was telling knock knock jokes.
Lenny Bruce wasn't funny. He was an important test case for obscenity and self-indulgence disguised as entertainment.
