      I hope the imaginary Lily made it, who had to stay out there and survive the rain and the cold. Now we got a reminder how fast a person can get into life threatening situations even if well prepared and with shelter. Beside a good friend, the next useful item to bring for survival is a thick water repellant fur.

      Hello Lily actually you did quite well.
      The the bowl is a difficult way to start a fire.
      Natural Flint and Steel and a little (Charred Cloth). You will have a fire every time. Small Charred Cloth can be stored in a little Aspirin Metal Box or the Cough Drop Box, if you want a lot it's. The Secret to starting fires. Easy to make small metal box you punch a hole in it. Take an old t-shirt cut it into pieces large or small and filled the Box. Start a fire Set the Box in the fire. You will see a little Flame come out of the Hole when the flame goes out. You take the box out of the fire and cover the hole with a rock or something. Leave it overnight don't open it. Next day check it make sure there's no sparks.
      If there are you cover the box and leave it a while longer. When it's done you take a small piece put it into your dry twigs and grass bird nest. Put a Spark to it and you have Fire. The word survival does not mean in your underwear and shorts. You step out of the house you have pants you have a shirt you have a jacket. If you take a little pack you should always have a (Survival Blanket) one or two of them. They're lightweight, Ferris Large Rod or (Natural Flint and Steel) and (Char Cloth)
      Always carry a couple of Protein Bars and Water. They sell Water in little Aluminum bags. Nice heavy duty Knife.
      I carry a Cleaver that cuts through the bone or wood 3 in circumference Maple goes through it without hitting it. You just use the weight to pound it through the wood to make your kindling multi-purpose 1 lb.

    This time mother nature told me a lesson I will never forget. Not building a shelter is a risky move which works on dry nights, but when it is raining cats and dogs not having a shelter will put you in a life threatening situation. Because I had no cell service or medic at my side I decided to tap out of the challenge, which was really dissapointing. But lesson is learned and I will do a better job next time.

    • @geraldinegregory.1803
      @geraldinegregory.1803 2 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Once you have made sure of water supply, next most important thing is shelter. Too much energy expended on getting a fire. Work should be proportionate to food supplies.
      I didn't feel that using the tampon to start the fire was cheating. In a real survival situation you would use anything that was available, even maybe some fibres from your clothing, or fluff from your pocket. Disappointing that you couldn't get through the night, but considering the mistakes mounting up, and the deteriorating weather you did the right thing to abort the mission. Making mistakes is good, it teaches, not just for you but for all your followers. Maybe this video will actually help someone in a real life emergency situation. Good luck, and we're all wishing you a better shot at it next time.

    I know you probably wont read this, probably no one will but this reminds me of a time when I had something similar. For about a week I lived on a remote island in Lake Michigan. A ferry would come a couple times a week unless the water was too turbulent. This was during the summer as well, and the first couple days were perfect. It was great! Then a freak storm happened one night and with no indication that there was going to be a storm I had left the waterproof tent covering off. I woke up around 4:30 am to a completely flooded tent, easily 6 inches of standing water, my sleeping bag was waterlogged, lightening overhead, strong 20mph winds, low 40s temperature and water pouring into my tent. Was absolutely crazy. I poured out my tent and threw the tarp over the top of the tent but by that time the material was soaked too and collecting water on the sides. Getting back into that wet, cold sleeping bag was one of the worst experiences. The next day it rained all day and stayed around mid 40s. My camping stove was soaked and useless. The wood was soaked and useless. There was also technically a ban on all wood fires so even if it was dry I’d still risk getting in trouble anyways. All I had to eat that entire day was 1 uncooked ramen noodles, the flavor packet and water. It was miserable. Then I had to get back into the sleeping bag, which was still soaking. Since it rained the entire day there was no way I could even hope to dry it off either. Luckily for me and my friend, there was a ranger on the island. It was such a walk of shame going to him for some help but he was a really nice guy. Gave us some dry wool blankets, a warm oatmeal breakfast and even hooked us up with a working stove. We had to stay on the island an extra day to wait for the water to calm down. Nature that day reminded me of some things too.

      That sucks! BUT, you made it through without needing to be evaced out, so that counts - well done! I've slept out in the rain a couple times to, not all that fun... One occasion on a military exercise (somewhere in Ontario Canada) we were trying to light a Coleman stove during the rain, held a poncho over top while we lit it, bad idea - but pretty cool fire ball and no one got hurt. I think we managed to stay somewhat dry that night. Good times 😃

    This was a good recommendation. I’ve gone out camping with good gear and high expectations before and was still blindsided by the weather and forced to abort. Even if you had made a shelter, it would have had to be pretty extensive for that weather shift. And being on the slope like that meant a risk for a rock slide or something similar in a torrential downpour. You made the right decision. It’s better to escape with your life than to die to prove a point. I think trying again would be a great option, and make choices that you can compare to this experience while creating a new one. Great video! And to all the people talking about your choice in clothing, they’ve apparently never watched Naked and Afraid. I’d never go that far, but a day hiker would easily be out in limited clothing like you were wearing, and that makes it very realistic. Great job!

    Theres no cheating in survival!!! Its about learning to work with everything you have at hand!
    (As a non participant) I feel one of the things I took away from your experience is to make a shelter first, and then the fire... one can always work under cover, protected from rain as long as it needs to take...

      It's a long known fire starter. Tear it open, fluff it up and it takes a flame from a match, lighter, ferro rod etc. Always very useful to have in a fire kit.
      It's not quite as good as Vaseline and cotton balls/pads, but it's still a very effective and efficient fire starter in most conditions.

    Shows the importance of the order: shelter, water, fire, food. Water was a gimme since she was told it was fine, fire she had to work for, and food she did a little gathering….but skipping number 1 sent her home early.

    • @AwesomeFish12
      @AwesomeFish12 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      with no large leaves around she would have had to do an A-frame with branches/sticks and then pile on debris/leaf litter. That takes half a day or more, not enough time to also make fire. It was predicted to be a warm and clear day/night, so she opted for just a fire. But this is Austria, the weather is unpredictable. Warm can become cold so quickly, even in summer. Maybe the shelter would have been better.

    I'm glad you were able to find your car in those conditions! Weather can change really fast in the forest. I remember going trail running on a warm day, once I was 4.5 miles in, I decided to take a break, but the weather had turned cold and cloudy as the sun set. Large hailstones began falling...I was shirtless and wearing shorts, I had paused for only a couple of minutes before I had to start running back as fast as I could. It was almost pitch black by the time I made it back to my car (having run 9 miles as fast as I could), covered in welts from the 1+ inch sized hail. We all make mistakes, the key is to learn from them! Which you did :)
