- SBCC celebrates its 50th Anniversary with a series. We follow SBCC's diverse field of participants, staff and community organizers.
Anthony started in SBCC’s youth development initiative, Thriving Together, when he was 13 years old. He then transitioned to becoming a paid intern in SBCC’s Digital Dreamers arts program, and then again with Thriving Together. Anthony is currently working on bridging transitional pathways for children and families at SBCC through our agency’s Doula program (child birth), Preschool Without Walls (early education), and Thriving Together ( K-9th grade) programs. The purpose of this initiative is for families to utilize all of our agency’s ventures that accommodate the growth and development of children, from birth through junior high school. In addition to this amazing endeavor, Anthony continues to work with the Digital Dreamers arts program, focused on channeling creativity and freedom of expression into digital art. Anthony is a valued employee here at SBCC.
Daisha Thomas, a Los Angeles native, is a versatile artist with a passion for both the arts and culinary pursuits. By committing herself to SBCC's Streetcraft entrepreneurship venture, Daisha found crucial support to pursue her dreams. With the agency’s assistance, she obtained her business LLC, leading to the successful launch of her mobile food venture, Dai's Sea & Soulfood. Beyond culinary achievements, Daisha's dedication to community and mentorship inspires those around her. Daisha’s story reflects the transformative impact of SBCC's support, as she now encourages fellow youth to explore and embrace their unique gifts. Daisha is a testament to the power of mentorship and community in realizing one's potential.
Cole Hayes, a resilient single father, excels in personal and professional growth. A proud graduate of SBCC's Fatherhood Program, he's committed to building a prosperous future through SBCC's Family Prosperity Initiative. Cole's journey continued through the Energy Pathway Program, earning certification in Process Technology. Chevron Corporation in El Segundo recognized his skills, offering him a full-time position as an Operator. Cole's story exemplifies the transformative power of education and perseverance. Beyond professional achievements, he finds joy in fatherhood, cherishing outdoor adventures and capturing ocean beauty through photography. Cole's narrative inspires, highlighting the impact of education and familial love.
Irma Fernandez joined SBCC in 2020 through a farmer's market event and soon became engaged in various programs, including SBCC’s Digital Dreamers Arts program and Thriving Together after school tutoring program. Irma also received support during one of her pregnancies, through the Doula program offered by SBCC. She continues to be involved in the community, passionate about making a positive impact. Irma always credits SBCC’s involvement in supporting her son with his academics, which improved immensely having him come to Thriving Together to receive tutoring, while also building relationships with his peers. Irma is an amazing mother, artist and entrepreneur, who runs her own balloon and party supply business.
Juan Conde is the Program Manager for Capacity to Thrive, overseeing both Prevention and Aftercare (P&A) along with Relative Support Services (RSS) at SBCC. His journey with SBCC began humbly, initially connected as an everyday person through a NAC (Neighborhood Action Council). Over time, Juan's dedication and commitment led to opportunities to contribute in various capacities. He started by providing aid as security and later utilized his skills in maintenance, eventually becoming the supervisor of building operations.
Juan’s passion for community engagement and empowerment saw him evolve into a community organizer, fostering connections and collaborations with community residents while leading projects driven by their aspirations. Presently, Juan serves as a vital link between SBCC and DCFS, acting as a point of contact to work directly with families, ensuring they are connected to services beneficial to their well-being. Juan's journey epitomizes dedication, growth, and a profound commitment to uplifting communities.
Rodney Moss is a young creative entrepreneur, photographer, and film maker from Dallas, TX. Early this year, upon moving to Los Angeles, Rodney joined SBCC’s Streetcraft entrepreneurship program, where he received support in launching his virtual reality company, called APEX VR. Rodney seamlessly fuses his love for storytelling and virtual reality development. As the founder of Apex VR, his company excels in crafting immersive experiences. Upon completing Streetcraft, Rodney's passion, creativity, and storytelling gifts have also propelled him to the current position as Director of Communications at SBCC. He aspires to mentor other young people looking for opportunities to make an impact in the creative economy.
