For the Captain Darling it's because of them being known to destroy ships of people who set sail near their territory but for the mermaid Y/n it's due to people who would set sail to just hunt mermaids and sirens for their scales and at times their meat. Basically your loved family member have gotten killed by land creatures as treasure or for food. I'm waiting for more sassy y/n mermaid since I know it will be hilarious to see the pair bickering and in desperate situations have to put their differences aside to work together.

Why does he have such a vendetta against Mermaids? It turns out that Sirens and Mermaids aren't even close to being the same kind of creatures. Sirens are half bird, half human and perch on the rocks of cliff faces above rocky coastlines like sea birds. They actually lure in the ships with their voices and then once the ship is beached they dive bomb the deck and pick the sailors off from above. Mermaids are half fish half human and rarely come to the surface and are known for saving drowning sailors and giving gifts and offerings to those who aid them in return. Meanwhile, humans were known for cutting off their fins and selling them in fish markets. Sirens are closer to Harpies than they are to Mermaids and Mermaids are closer to water nymphs than they are Sirens. Still, why so mad at the mermaids? Who hurt you, Captain?!
