I love the way Diablo II's cinematics tell the story in the past tense, rather than a continuation of your character's current plot. It makes it feel like you're always playing catch-up, as the enemy is always one step ahead of you.
The voice actor for Marius did an incredible job, all these years later it's his delivery has always stuck with me. Can't wait for the other cinematics!

Small detail, but I love how this line of dialogue gives a hint of Marius’s state of mind: “How could this broken shell of a man, barely able to carry the weight of his own sword, be the *Burning Terror* which drove me to hide here?" Marius doesn’t know who or what the wanderer is, but his subconscious somehow recognizes that this is the Lord of Terror, even if he does not realize it.
When Diablo 2 is done installing and you open the game for the first time... This cinematic sets the mood! It stays faithful to every shot while adding just enough new touches! Can't wait to play this!

That's how you remaster something.. the audio is just as much part as the nostalgia as everything else and I feel like audio is the first thing to feel off when they change music, voice actor and so on. Somehow the audio gets infused into our memory far deeper and we are much quicker to accept the visual differences than audio.
They're the same voices, but still improved and better somehow. Listen to them in turns, they sound the same but better, higher quality. Masterful work.
That's what I keep saying. If we are to believe rumors, Vicarious Visions now runs all Blizz games under "classic" label (so SC1 and 2, possibly HotS, D2 and 3, and War3), so once D2R release hopefully they're allowed to go back to Warcraft 3.

Was looking for this comment on here :) You're brain filled in the shortfalls of technology back then... now it does not need to, but it's still the same image your brain made while watching as a kid, especially seeing as being young is when you are most creative as an individual. It is a very strange experience we as diablo 2 players are lucky to experience this so seamlessly!
Good that they did not change the audio, perfection cannot be improved. They did manage to improve the visuals and some of the animations though from the old, good job. Wont change that iluminati is behind covid and that amazon looks 55.
Looks aside (which are fantastic), the way Aiden is struggling to maintain control, tremors in his hand, his soul literally leaving his body for a few moments, only to struggle his way back and realize that in just a few short moments his loss of control resulted in the deaths of everyone in the area, and then the slow walk through the fire, knowing it won't hurt him, but that rest is impossible due to being driven east. You can feel his exhausted desperation. Absolute story magic

Seems like they kept the same audio, animation and camera angles. They just updated the character models, lighting, texture and all the visual stuff. Very nice.
Just? It's completely redone from scratch using the same cinematography of the original. Only thing that remains from the original is the audio, which honestly kind of sounds flat in contrast.

This opening cinematic is my favourite of all time. Since its release Iv watched it countless times that I know the lines of the top of my head. Never in my wildest dreams I would see this cinematic get a modern rendition...its like Im in a different alternative time line or something
Time to refund this BAIT & SWITCH AND MOVE ON. Diablo 2 REFUNDED removed TCP/IP AND BY EXTENSION MODS .Both of these were either said on Blizzconline (TCP/IP) or tweeted by VV (mod support) as FEATURES, BOTH WERE SILENTLY REMOVED (one by extension from the removal of the other)
They changed three things in the tavern scene, though. 1. After the Wanderer enters, the guy chatting with his friend used to rest his head in his palm - now he made a waving motion instead. 2. The skeleton that kills that guy used to grab/stab him in the chest with its fingers - now it got him in the side with its sword. 3. The flames used to evaporate before the Wanderer as he exits the tavern, leaving a path for Marius to follow - now he just walks through the flames, and they added a whisper of Marius' name.

I still remember 20 years ago, when my brother and I would sneak out of our bedroom when our parents had gone to bed, to play D2 on the only PC we had (a Pentium II). Every now and then we would get caught, but still we kept sneaking out to explore the dark world of Diablo deep into the night. To be able to experience it again, afresh, is just too good for words.

I cannot believe Blizzard of all companies had the wisdom to keep the dialogue audio from D2. It was absolutely masterclass and needed nothing to be improved upon, save the graphics. Beautiful job and that kinda nostalgia overload cannot NOT put smile on one's face. Especially those of us who foolishly poured thousands of hours into D2. WTB HOTO!!! 40 SOJs!!!
I'm absolutely blown away! So glad Vicarius Visions is now a part of Blizzard - together they have produced a masterpiece of a remake. Remastering even the cinematics in such a high quality shows how passionate they have been with Diablo 2. Can't wait to play it this weekend.
This is disgustingly amazing. Wow. I need the Netflix series ASAP. Such a faithful restoration and enhancement. I think this will be the only game I play until D4.
I started playing diablo 2 when I was 5 years old... I'm still playing it now. Already pre downloaded resurrected. We're reaching levels of nostalgia that shouldn't exist!!!
Have never played Diablo II, I liked Diablo III a lot so I can't wait. If this cinematic is any indication of what I'm in for I'm stoaked. This was amazing!
I am beyond excited to see the rest of the cinematics now. The Act 4 ending Cinematic is one of my absolute favorites and I can't wait to see how that's done.
Facials are amazing (particularly eyes), lighting is absolutely on point (Thankyou for not making it too bright and colorful), overall great remastering... My nitpick... some of the dynamic movement. Yeah, things are generally better but I noticed Marius looked a bit too... 'sane'... in the beginning. I guess I always imagined Baal's soulstone to have gollumed him up a bit. He scratched himself and was more twitchy, I remember a bit of drool from his chin. That's really all though, I'll still applaud it and hope that they keep up the good work with this one. Hopefully it's as faithful as Starcraft Remastered.
The audio is like the nostalgia of smell, it brought back so many memories. Excited to see the other cinematics, and relive this. It looks like they're doing this one a solid < 3 RIP WC3
I like how you can see the face of the warrior from Diablo 1 more clearly in the wanderers face now. It's nore obvious in the act 2 cinematic, but I appreciate the additional details
Not going to lie. When I first heard of Blizzard remastering D2, I was, I think understandably skeptical. " Leave it alone " , I said " it is already great, why else would I have played it for over 20 years".. The more I see, the more I must admit that I might have been wrong. This looks incredible.

The old cinematics have held up a lot better than the rest of the games graphics, but this is definitely a great improvement...one thing I always wondered in the original is that it looked like he'd lost an arm, here he clearly still has two. The details are great. Was the audio changed at all, or still the same sound from the original?
I mean the old graphics are 800x600 or less. If you play Project Diablo 2 mod then they work pretty well. I mean I'd even go play the original still actually
all in all this is a fantastic job remastering something that is so dear to so many people's hearts. Three points I think the original is still better at 1. The white outlined skeletons in the dramatic "within the wanderer" moment look better and more menacing in the original. 2. The Wanderer's face is more mysterious and cooler in the original. 3. The way The Wanderer walks straight into the fire with a weird gait is cooler in the original.

Well it is understandable that a little of that can be lost when making the figures look and move more realistically. The original had some rather uncanny exaggeration to the characters which, given the themes, worked quite well.
I'd love watching a whole movie like this telling the whole story up to the present game coming out on the 22nd. Now that would be awesome as they're cinematics are spot on.
Eyyy, 90's boomers. My favourite game from my adolescence that I meticulously played and explored every corner of the map so that it shows the full mini-map interface. What a game, still haven't finished Lord Of Destruction after all these years. This is absolutely amazing in the truest of sense and I had a big grin on my face all the way through.
Judging by the absolute attention to detail these guys put in across the board on this whole project, I'm guessing they are well aware and it has mostly to do with time/money constraints.
I agree. The new art looks AMAZING, but I wish they'd made Marius a BIT more like the original. The hollow cheeks and sunken eyes of the original make the character look more haunted by his past. If those features were just as extreme as in the original it would have looked out of place with the other visuals, but somewhere between the old version and this version would have been better. The rest is spot on!
Remaster's fancy high-res textures and smoother animations are nice, but human characters still have better facial expressions and gestures in the original even with CG technology from 20 years ago. The old Blizzard was truly legendary and ahead of their time.
This is the most faithful remaster I’ve ever seen, so far! The only thing that could have made this better is if they remastered both 1 and 2, then made them a package deal. Diablo 1 would also be a remaster that these youngsters didn’t know they needed lol.
First of all, let me say, thank you for this remaster. Secondly, I love Diablo 2. It's a childhood memory an legend in my eyes. Last of all, I wish we would could have had a cinematic an story line to go along with when Andy was introduced an how she died, along with Duriel an Mephisto. I also wish that we would have had a cinematic and storyline of an epic battle with the ancients as well how Baal died. None the less though, thank you all again at vicarious visions for taking on this task. They said it couldn't be done, or wouldn't be done but you proved them wrong. Making the impossible, possible...
I hate to admit it, but I actually cried watching this. This recreation of the original cinematic hit me in my core -- it's so true to the original; remastered so lovingly as to transport me back to middle school when I first saw it. I don't know how to communicate the emotions I'm feeling. This was beautiful. Thank you, Vicarious Visions, for your masterful work.
Cant wait to try the beta, i never played this 20 years ago, i got introduced to Dungeon Siege first so i wasnt interested, but i know now im going to love it 😁 gonna level up every character its going to be great
Omph, you have my sympathies... Dungeon Siege is a terribly watered down ARPG that actually takes steps BACK compared to D2, with some lackluster skills and damage types meaning nothing (fire or lightning, nothing is really immune or resistant to it).
Diablo 2 is one of the best games ever made, and it makes Diablo 3 look like Postal by comparison (and I thoroughly enjoyed D3 as well). I'm so excited for all of the new players to experience this!
This is great.. However it is pretty sad when all we can do is get excited about an old game. I miss the days where we get excited about new games and new IP's. What happened to modern day creativity? It is the same way with movies. I am tired of living in the past looking at everything with rose tinted glasses.

The only games that tell their story like telling a story, that come to mind for me, are this and borderlands.
I mean, they did it because the player character can choose between multiple classes so focusing on the current events wouldn’t really work.

That's because this is Marius telling the story that already happened, he saw the wanderer turn into Diablo.
Sucks for him to survive delving into the cathedral in Tristram only to accidentally bump into Aidan finally losing out to Diablo.

I'm absolutely blown away! So glad Vicarius Visions is now a part of Blizzard - together they have produced a masterpiece of a remake. Remastering even the cinematics in such a high quality shows how passionate they have been with Diablo 2. Can't wait to play it this weekend.
The tingles, literally seeing the d2 logo come up but in this high resolution, bought a tear to my eye. My whole childhood was this game
This is disgustingly amazing. Wow. I need the Netflix series ASAP. Such a faithful restoration and enhancement. I think this will be the only game I play until D4.

Have never played Diablo II, I liked Diablo III a lot so I can't wait. If this cinematic is any indication of what I'm in for I'm stoaked. This was amazing!
Now imagine this dedication to quality 20 years ago.

I am beyond excited to see the rest of the cinematics now. The Act 4 ending Cinematic is one of my absolute favorites and I can't wait to see how that's done.

Facials are amazing (particularly eyes), lighting is absolutely on point (Thankyou for not making it too bright and colorful), overall great remastering...
My nitpick... some of the dynamic movement. Yeah, things are generally better but I noticed Marius looked a bit too... 'sane'... in the beginning. I guess I always imagined Baal's soulstone to have gollumed him up a bit. He scratched himself and was more twitchy, I remember a bit of drool from his chin.
That's really all though, I'll still applaud it and hope that they keep up the good work with this one. Hopefully it's as faithful as Starcraft Remastered.

Goddamn it! Games used to be awesome! I can feel the love they put in to some of the old good games. This reinforces that feeling.
I like how you can see the face of the warrior from Diablo 1 more clearly in the wanderers face now.

The old cinematics have held up a lot better than the rest of the games graphics, but this is definitely a great improvement...one thing I always wondered in the original is that it looked like he'd lost an arm, here he clearly still has two. The details are great. Was the audio changed at all, or still the same sound from the original?
The audio feels the same with the exception that the waiter doesn't say anything... Oh, wait, nvm... lol

I mean the old graphics are 800x600 or less. If you play Project Diablo 2 mod then they work pretty well. I mean I'd even go play the original still actually

all in all this is a fantastic job remastering something that is so dear to so many people's hearts. Three points I think the original is still better at
1. The white outlined skeletons in the dramatic "within the wanderer" moment look better and more menacing in the original.
2. The Wanderer's face is more mysterious and cooler in the original.
3. The way The Wanderer walks straight into the fire with a weird gait is cooler in the original.
Can't wait to see The Destruction of the Worldstone cinematic.
With this level of passion and attention to details it must be a true perfection. :3

This is absolutely a wonderful and beautiful rendition of the original cinematic.
after played Diablo1 for quite a time, to see this trailer first time was mindblowing and everything we wished to see. Now see this pimped with so much love to the details , oh man. Thanks a lot, this is so big for us old gamers, who spend years in the diablo2 world. btw real diabloplayer still hate WOW ;)=)

They've completely missed the manic look in Marius' eyes. Just feel like they failed in capturing the subtleties of Marius' slip into madness.
that's the only thing missing. I love how he was paranoid in the original.

Well it is understandable that a little of that can be lost when making the figures look and move more realistically.
The original had some rather uncanny exaggeration to the characters which, given the themes, worked quite well.
I'd love watching a whole movie like this telling the whole story up to the present game coming out on the 22nd. Now that would be awesome as they're cinematics are spot on.

Eyyy, 90's boomers. My favourite game from my adolescence that I meticulously played and explored every corner of the map so that it shows the full mini-map interface. What a game, still haven't finished Lord Of Destruction after all these years. This is absolutely amazing in the truest of sense and I had a big grin on my face all the way through.
Great cinematic however one small critique, on 6:13 in fire should retreat from the Wanderer like it did in original cinematic :)

Judging by the absolute attention to detail these guys put in across the board on this whole project, I'm guessing they are well aware and it has mostly to do with time/money constraints.

I agree. The new art looks AMAZING, but I wish they'd made Marius a BIT more like the original. The hollow cheeks and sunken eyes of the original make the character look more haunted by his past.
If those features were just as extreme as in the original it would have looked out of place with the other visuals, but somewhere between the old version and this version would have been better. The rest is spot on!

I had no idea they would completely redo them. That's quite amazing.
Remaster's fancy high-res textures and smoother animations are nice, but human characters still have better facial expressions and gestures in the original even with CG technology from 20 years ago. The old Blizzard was truly legendary and ahead of their time.
Trivia: the voice actor of Marius was also the actor who played The Riddler in the 1960’s Batman starring Adam West, Frank Gorshin.

This is the most faithful remaster I’ve ever seen, so far! The only thing that could have made this better is if they remastered both 1 and 2, then made them a package deal. Diablo 1 would also be a remaster that these youngsters didn’t know they needed lol.
so excited ive been playing diablo since 1998 and still own the original cd of the game and play it from time to time. i cant get enough.

First of all, let me say, thank you for this remaster. Secondly, I love Diablo 2. It's a childhood memory an legend in my eyes. Last of all, I wish we would could have had a cinematic an story line to go along with when Andy was introduced an how she died, along with Duriel an Mephisto. I also wish that we would have had a cinematic and storyline of an epic battle with the ancients as well how Baal died. None the less though, thank you all again at vicarious visions for taking on this task. They said it couldn't be done, or wouldn't be done but you proved them wrong. Making the impossible, possible...
I hate to admit it, but I actually cried watching this. This recreation of the original cinematic hit me in my core -- it's so true to the original; remastered so lovingly as to transport me back to middle school when I first saw it. I don't know how to communicate the emotions I'm feeling. This was beautiful. Thank you, Vicarious Visions, for your masterful work.

Cant wait to try the beta, i never played this 20 years ago, i got introduced to Dungeon Siege first so i wasnt interested, but i know now im going to love it 😁 gonna level up every character its going to be great
Omph, you have my sympathies... Dungeon Siege is a terribly watered down ARPG that actually takes steps BACK compared to D2, with some lackluster skills and damage types meaning nothing (fire or lightning, nothing is really immune or resistant to it).
Diablo 2 is one of the best games ever made, and it makes Diablo 3 look like Postal by comparison (and I thoroughly enjoyed D3 as well). I'm so excited for all of the new players to experience this!

Pretty good remake of a pretty good cinematic. The shot when Marius drops the pipe was weak compared to the original. Thumbs up though im excited
This really returned me to my childhood when i first played it. Good old times. Such a nostalgic feeling.
This is great.. However it is pretty sad when all we can do is get excited about an old game. I miss the days where we get excited about new games and new IP's. What happened to modern day creativity? It is the same way with movies. I am tired of living in the past looking at everything with rose tinted glasses.
I'm pretty freakin excited for Diablo 4.
I think problem is that there are very big companies now, they care only about money, and other less important stuff.
