- My name is Leon Juma .23 years ago I was born in Kenyatta hospital, at that time Spina Bifida wasn’t known by many but am lucky and I always thank God that mine was corrected after a month and I remember mum would tell me that they had to go to hospital most of the time because of rehabilitation.I stayed up to age 4 and that’s when I started walking many had thought that I wouldn’t but let’s say God proved that he works in miracles. At that time I had problems with my bladder and bowel and a friend of mum advised us to visit Kijabe hospital (Bethany Kids) where we would get help and truly speaking we found good doctors and after some few correction surgeries I was able to control both urine and bowel with the aid of some medical equipment (Catheter) which is a small pipe that helps in the drainage of urine from the bladder and a drug called oxybutin which helps in holding urine for some time before draining it.I Can say Bethany Kids was Heaven sent in my life and after that I managed to join school, which was a normal school with students without disabilities and at first it was a challenge sometimes I remember I would mess up and all kids would be laughing at me and I would be sent home to go and change and that meant I would lose a lot of class time. It went on like this until class six and I had to change to a special school which had a different experience (caring and Understanding environment) and I was able to finish school and join high school.I attended Joytown Secondary school which was still a special school and a lot changed when I was there. One thing I can say I had not accepted myself and to avoid being laughed at when I mess I used to put on diapers just to make sure such accidents wouldn’t happen. But I remember one day I just decided to stop doing that and woo that was the best decision because I gained confidence and I realized I could really change a lot if I believed in myself. And from there I started mentoring the rest of my friends who were like and I can remember most of them always say they are not the same as they were this really motivated me and I managed to attend college and did IT because I was always passionate about computers.* 23 years old born with a condition called Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect.
