    I just tried out the frozen grapes. I will be doing this instead of ice for my low proof whiskies going forward. They chilled it fast without the usual thinning feeling of the melted ice. I tried it out with Laphroaig Cairdeas Warehouse 1. I cannot believe how amazing it was.

    The thing about stones and ice is that stones (or stainless steel) retain sensible heat, which is MUCH lower than latent heat (the energy needed to change phase, eg evaporation or melting). For that reason, ice will ALWAYS be superior at lowering the temperature of liquids, albeit at the cost of diluting them... unless you contain the water! Grapes were a neat trick!
    On the other hand, stones add mass to a drink, so they take more time to change temperature altogether, so both ice and stones can be added together to keep the entire thing cold for longer (even after the ice is gone) without much dilution (that is, without adding MORE ice to it just to keep it cold)... at the cost of increased dead volume (you fit less booze in a cup).

No smell of mold or anything. They were a gift, of course. Looked em up and they do just as you stated. I like to toss two into a whiskey that might be a little warm from Arizona heat in the apartment. Brings it down just a few degrees so it isn't warm anymore.

    I was just thinking about the smoke thing a little more in depth when I was replaying this video back in my mind. In order to make something taste smoky, you'd have to add smoke that had been distilled into liquid for it to be little more than perfume. I've heard of people using smoked grains for beer from cooking shows in addition to the whisk(e)ys on this channel. That got me to think of what would happen if liquid smoke was used in a whiskey as aromatic bitters in cocktails. I can't imagine you'd need more than a drop or 2 in any glass. How would it change the experience? Experiment, I say!

    • @RS-686

    • @MrJhchrist
      @MrJhchrist 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can bubble smoke directly through liquids, no need for distilling. Imagine a bong. The products exist. Matter of opinion if it's better to make a liquid smoke or to smoke the air and glass, we do of course taste with our nose too.

      I'm not sure, but I think the notion is that the oils in the whiskey pick up particulate from the smoke. I've only ever tried this in a "smoked old fashioned" in a couple local bars, but the effect is very nice.

    If you kept the whiskey stones in a deep freezer (sub 0) they'd likely work better and not dilute. I'm not sure that'd really improve the overall, since the melt from standard ice also allows more aromatics to release, much like adding a bit of water.

    I have stainless bullets that are for whiskey chilling. They work a little bit but only once then they warm up but if you use half of them, then for the second glass you swap them out, because they're stainless steel, they chill down super cold super fast and are ready for the next glass unless you're shooting them down quick obviously but in ten minutes, they are back to frosty cold again. And I also have a belt buckle flask dispenser 🤣 but the dispenser is a pain in the ass to clean the little canisters... Cause mine has little clear canisters that have three finger crosses that to press up with a glass or shot glass and it automatically fills instead of having to pull a lever. It's cool but if you don't clean one when it empties right way it's a nightmare

    my sister got me the smoker for christmas last year, there's some tricks to it. sometimes even though there's a lot of smoke, sometimes the whiskey doesn't pick up much flavor. I find that if I'm making a cocktail that uses a simple syrup, i'll put that in first with the ice and smoke that- THEN put the other whiskey/liquor in there. gives old fashioneds a twist. works best with a butane torch, don't even think about a regular lighter or match- you really gotta have the flame blasting through there to get the smoke going and non butane lighters will leave an awful aftertaste.

The cleaver dripper doesn't pour thru until you put it on the glass. There's more to rapid aging than high pressure and wood chips. The technology dates to the late 19th century (hurray for old distillery manuals). The older version included oxygenation, temperature cycling, yes some vibration, and a couple other things I can't remember offhand. It worked, but it was way more expensive than just letting booze sit in barrels.

    easiest way to tell with the whiskey pump would be to pump out some whiskey without the filter, then do a glass with the filter. then compare the 2 to a standard pour whiskey.

The size makes it so they actually cool pretty well and don't hit your teeth when you drink, but it does feel like it will break the glass if you aren't careful. If you have a strong enough magnet on the bottom of the glass couldn't you use food safe steel for the balls and get the same effect?

    I bet the reason the whiskey stones don't cool very well is because there is no phase change. It takes a relatively large amount of thermal energy to turn ice into water as opposed to just warming up a piece of stone.

    I don't even use whiskey stones for whiskey, I freeze them into ice cubes I bring with my yeti cup every day when I remember to lmao

    I love watching stuff like this. Bc it reminds me how little of a whiskey drinker I actually am even though it's all I drink🤣. I only like blended Irish whiskey and I always chase with a coke back or mix with a Lil coke... 🤫

    Shameless plug... I make a version of the cocktail smoking kits using old whiskey staves as the base, and stave shavings for the burning material, sold as a kit if anyone is interested. ;) They do work! The longer you leave the top on, the smokier the effect.

    a little tip on the smoke infuser i think it needs to sit for a while to let the smoke infuse into the liquid. it works amazingly well with old fashions.

      @robinmiller1989 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@acidfruitloops yep, just like smoking meats is entirely nonsense. flavour doesn't matter and technique/timing is inconsequential. it's a 200 year fad that should be burned out soon

      @@robinmiller1989 You're really trying to compare smoking meats with burning wood scraps into a glass??

      @@acidfruitloops nah its still there. not only is the science still not conclusive in smoking glasses, so much of taste is smell. the smoke certainly imparts a flavour to the end product. whether you think its gimmicky or not is irrelevant to people's experience. to say it's BS is unfair and shortsighted, hence the sarcasm.

    Love the cocktail smokers. On another hand I have a local blender I'm curious on what you would think about there blends. Their blend named Dexter has won several awards and I have actually grown pretty fond of. If you are capable to get access to some of the blends from Brain Brew, I would be interested in your reaction. They even have a smoked whiskey, Tall Stacks. Thanks

    I think the reason why the grapes worked better as ice cubes is cause they’re full of water, which has a lower freezing point compared to whiskey stones. But, instead of just melting due to entropy, like the ice cubes, the grapes have the bonus of having a whole skin to lessen the entropy and heat exchange, so they stay colder longer, and with them being much colder, they’re far more effective.

    ok, ok but... I have a request... Please I beg of you people....
    Use the smoker thingy on the whiskey recipient part of the pump thingy.
    Close the pump thingy without dispersing the smoke.
    Shake (maybe ?)
    Pumpy pumpy pump...
    Is there any noticeable difference ?
    Still using the wood """"filter"""" would probably be good (higher pressure ?) ?
    I need to know... But I don't drink alcohol...
