I recommend Root letter. It’s a story about a girl who used to write letters to a penfriend and after 8 years after she wrote her last letter. She gets a letter saying that the girl is dead. She then travels to the penfriends home town where she tries to find out what happens. I’m not going to say more because of spoilers but I really recommend it.

A really good visual novel series that I recommend is called Danganronpa and its very story driven. The music is also fantastic so I think you might like it!

9 hours 9 persons 9 doors is a classic DS survival/puzzle/horror from the zero escape series that just recently got revamped and ported to PC! it's one of my top favorites, has very very interesting story completion mechanics and engaging character writing to keep you guessing who to trust. the sequels dropped the ball a bit, but i love the first game. (there's no dating element, rest assured!)

This is my favorite as well. Although its more of a hybird then a true VN, lots of puzzles.
A truly original and memorable scifi story. The one hurdle is the versions as each has its own pros/cons. Personally I'd go with the new one but it's up for debate.
The creator released a new game recently too, AI The Sommnium files, which is also amazing.

    Love this kind of videos!
The DS and vita are VNs powerhouses.
Im playing Hotel Dusk for the DS right now. More of an adventure game style but really intriguing, with puzzles and a unique noir art style.
Telltale games also do the job. And classics like Danganropa and 999 series. The 2nd Zero escape game is so good.
    PS:Sorry for my bad english

Check out AI: The Somnium Files on the switch! It's made by the same creators as 9.9.9. The characters really wormed their way into my heart and the story is breath taking. I play A TON of visual novels and this was by far the best one I've played.

"Raging Loop" is another fantastic horror visual novel. It has a ton of replayability, a super creepy mystery and fascinating characters. Highly recomend it! It's based in a super isolated town in rural Japan where villagers get torn apart one by one. Very creepy and suspenseful.

Since you love horror games, I'd definitely recommend the Zero Escape series if you're after more games like this! Probably more thrillers than outright horror, but personally they're some of my absolute favorite game stories. The plots and twists get so crazy, and the characters feel so real!
You can find 999, the first in the series, on the DS (I'd definitely recommend this version for reasons that involve spoilers), but it was also remastered with full voice acting on modern platforms if you prefer that. Anyway, great video!

I highly, highly recommend Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and its sequel Mask of Truth. The games are primarily visual novels but do have SRPG style segments that are quite fun.
It's a huge cast of characters and the story is rich and complex and though it is VERY slow paced there is strong payoff by the end and I think it's very much worth it.

I've never heard of this series, I'll have to check it out! I love slow burn sorts of stories, so slow pacing doesn't bother me as long as the ending is rewarding haha
