Saying Goodbye To The Chevy Camaro: Here's when it will be back

  • The first generation of the Chevy Camaro hit the showrooms in 1966 as a 1967 model and ran thru 1969. This model came as a two-door convertible or coupe model featuring rear-wheel drive and multiple engine options. The most common engines featured a 230-cubic-inch engine with 140 horsepower and the much stronger 396-cubic-inch option with an output of 375 horsepower.
One of the highlights of the first generation was the pace car, which led the Indianapolis 500 in 1967.
Introduced on February 26, 1970, the second-generation Camaro was produced through the 1981 model year, with cosmetic changes made for the 1974 and 1978 model years. The car was heavily restyled and became somewhat larger and wider with the new styling.
The 1980 and 1981 Z28 models included an air induction hood scoop with an intake door that opened under full throttle.
The third-generation Camaro was produced from 1981 (for the 1982 model year) until 1992. These were the first Camaros to offer modern fuel injection, Turbo-Hydramatic 700R4 four-speed automatic transmissions, five-speed manual transmissions, 14-, 15- or 16-inch road wheels, a standard OHV 4-cylinder engine,[16] and hatchback bodies. The cars were nearly 500 pounds (227 kg) lighter than the second-generation model.
The IROC-Z was introduced in 1985 and continued through 1990. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Regulations required a CHMSL (Center High Mounted Stop Lamp) starting with the 1986 model year. For 1986, the new brake light was located on the exterior of the upper center area of the back hatch glass.
The fourth-generation Camaro debuted in 1993 on an updated F-body platform. It retained the same characteristics since its introduction in 1967: a coupé body style with 2+2 seating (with an optional T-top roof) or convertible (reintroduced in 1994). The standard engine from 1993 through 1995 was a 3.4 L V6, then a 3.8 L V6 was introduced in 1995.
The Camaro received a complete redesign and new platform in 2009 for the 2010 model year and fifth generation. This is pretty much what most of you younger viewers are used to seeing. Concept
The new body used styling cues from the 1969 Camaro, including the grille, roof styling, quarter windows, and side trim. Unlike the 1969 model and the 2006 concept, the production model's quarter windows were fixed and hid a thick B-pillar behind the glass.
Although not in continuous production for the entire period, the 2012 model year marked the 45th anniversary of the Camaro and this was commemorated with a model available only in "Carbon Flash Metallic" paint. This edition Camaro also included a unique stripe package, red, white, and blue interior stitching as well as 45th edition exclusive 20-inch wheels.
On May 16, 2015, Chevrolet introduced the sixth generation Camaro at Belle Isle Park in Detroit for the 2016 model year. The launch, complete with previous generation Camaros on display, coincided with the vehicle's upcoming 50th birthday.[31]
The 2016 Camaro weighed 200 lb (91 kg) less than its predecessor. Over 70% of the sixth generation's architectural components are unique to the car and are not shared with any other current GM product.
For the 2017 model year, the 1LE performance package returns to the Camaro. The package builds off the success of the previous-generation 1LE, offering increased handling and track performance. In response to customer demand, Chevrolet offers two distinct 1LE packages, for both V6 and V8 models, each visually distinguished with a satin black vinyl wrapped hood and specific wheels.
For the 2019 model year, the Camaro received a facelift, with the LS, LT and SS models gaining a new set of LED headlights and revised fascia designs. The SS also received these upgrades, and also gained a new "polished black grille" which was received very negatively. The rear fascia also received a massage, gaining new split headlights which were colored red on the LS and LT and a unique clear lens on the SS and ZL1. The ZL1's front end remained unchanged, but gained a new set of spoilers.
Unfortunately, sales began to decline in the last 10 years, and have really declined since 2020 and so GM has decided to pull the plug on production just as they did between 2003 and 2009. Will some of us see it come back in our lifetime? Only time will tell. And so the story ends with the Ford Mustang is once again left alone and as the best selling sports car in the U.S. Chevy will stop production of the Camaro at the end of 2024.

I always wanted to have a 2nd Gen. Camaro since I first visited the USA the first time in 1990 as an 18 year old boy. I was fascinated by the looks, in my mind they were the coolest looking cars ever - but to get one in Germany was basically impossible for a young dude with no money. After 33 years I finally could fulfill my dream and now I´m the proud owner of a beautiful 1979 Camaro. Just looking at it sitting in the garage gives me a smile every time!

My first car was a 77 Camaro Type LT Rally Sport, and I really liked that car. I went on to purchase a 94 Z28, a 2010 LT1, and I currently own a 2010 SS. All these cars were manual transmissions. I hated the 98 facelift and felt it eventually led to the first cancelation. Likewise with the 6th Gen, I feel the front end styling got worse every year, and now it's gone once again. I'll be keeping my 2010 SS until the day I can no longer drive!!!

As an owner of a 3rd gen Camaro Z28 as well as a 5th gen Mustang GT, the discontinuation of the Camaro is terrible news. This current generation of Camaro is such a fantastic vehicle, it's mind-blowing to me that anyone looking for a serious performance car in this range would buy anything else. Congratulations to the smart ones that did. The rest of you, ehh not so much I think. In the meantime enjoy the view of the Camaro's taillights and exhaust fumes.

I sat in the latest generation Camaro at an auto show, and could barely see out the windshield! The designers kept making the windshield and the side windows narrower and narrower. It might look cool from the outside, but I bet it turned off a lot of potential buyers!

The 3rd gen Camaro was such a beautiful design. I still love it. GM made a huge mistake in building the cars as inexpensively as possible, hoping to make it back on constant repairs. I had a friend who bought a silver iroc z in 1986, within the year he stated it was in the repair shop more than it was out, and offered to sell it for free just to take over the monthly payments. Maybe one of the many modern custom car shops will take it upon themselves to recreate this in a quality way. It'd be great to tear up a racetrack with this design and a true race car underneath, like the old trans am cars. And be able to take it to the grocery store just for fun.

The Mustang sports car, the Beatles Pop Band and the Rolling Stones Rock Band all arrived the same year...WOW!
We went to the '64 Fair. I bought a '69 Mach 1 428cj 6 years later in 1970. I dreamed about a Mustang for 6 years. My brother wasn't as excited. He bought a new '68 Camaro RS 327C.I.D.
In comparison, the handling and braking on my 70 Mach 1 were terrible. But it was fast. The interior was awesome. The chin spoiler, rear tail wing, rear window louvers and hood pins were definitely cool and head turning. But l was much happier trading it for an AMC 1972 AMX Javelin 401C.I.D., which l kept for 175,000 miles.

First off Grest posting just love cars , n pickups and you put it all together and even add the commercial of that time too. 👍👍👍👍
Back in the early '80's I bought a '64 1/2 real cheap , but it had been turned into a Tijuana special , was in process of trying to put it back like new when I sold it to help out the family , I really didn't need the car it was just a project for me..
Didn't they have T-Tops in the '80's...?? For some reason I'm thinking they did but I may be wrong. They just don't seem to make cars today that had the style the cars had from the 60's --> 80's did they just looked kool 😎..
Thanks again for the posting 👍😎🍻✌️👋

    • @CamaroAmx
      @CamaroAmx 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The camaro had t-tops in the 70-2000’s. The t-top was introduced as an alternative to convertibles. Detroit got away from factory convertibles in the 70s due to government regulations with crash testing. The government wanted to introduce tougher roll over standards, which convertibles could never pass. T-tops were a work around that. The Firebird, Mustang and a few other cars that should had convertibles came with t-tops. The government regulation got nixed at the last minute and t-tops had become popular so they kept making them. Plus they were cheaper and easier to build than convertibles. It wasn’t until the late 80s that convertibles returned from the factory. Prior to that there were companies that would turn your car into a convertible. By the mid 80s, the factory was hiring them to make official convertibles. By the late 80s convertibles were done at the factory.

WOW ...!! Kool and thanks for sharing that.. I do know if you do a convertible job yourself it weakens the structure of the car not so bad if it had a frame but the unibody came into production in the late 70's and if you did that to a unibody the car would fold up in the middle when wrecked.. I learned about unibodys first hand by building hot rod out of 72 Vega dropped in 350srt block and well it twisted body had to crawl in n out of windows eventually 🤣🤣🤣.. Good speaking with you and for sharing 😎🍻✌️👋
