Yeah that question he asked was straight from the "anti Osaka rhetoric" that we've been hearing as of late. When did she say she "liked" one "form of media" over another? I would've actually been interested in a reply as to if she thought there was a difference between the platforms and perhaps why she liked one more than another, but the narrative he's pandering to within the context of the questions he actually asked didn't create a space to have an honest discussion. Instead, his assumptions were solely meant to paint a narrative. This wasn't good journalism.
@@TimothyOvia But he still has every right to ask that question. Since Osaka is going through some troubles and it's been a little popular lately,of course the media will talk about it. I guess he did paint a little narrative of her,but that's what the media and public does all the time to famous people. He asked a question that he thought she would have no problems answering.
A totally legit question. Respect for this reporter. The question was good and his demeanor was gentle. The agent's reaction does more damage to Osaka than good. Playing victim is not going to help her!!

He definitely is. You have to be ignorant or completely tone deaf to not hear the utter disrespect in the way he was talking to her. The reporter starts off with “You’re not crazy about dealing with us” and indicates that she has “interests served by her media presence” he is clearly setting a tone with his word choice and making unsubstantiated assumptions that the media is somehow contributing to her success. Naomi is right to clarify that the interest in her is due to her abilities as a tennis player. Furthermore the media is benefiting from Naomi. She has stated that she doesn’t feel comfortable in press conferences but did not convey in any way an animus towards “dealing” with anyone. He basically said I know you are uncomfortable with Us right now so tell Me on national television how uncomfortable you are since you are benefiting from Us. The word choice of a professional who makes his living with words is poor at best and incendiary at its base. If he was half the talent as a reporter that she is as a tennis player then this exchange would have transpired better. I do not believe this was unintentional which is why he rephrased his question when asked to repeat it. The comparisons that I am reading of Naomi’s reaction to that of other athletes are absolutely baseless as Naomi is her own person. She doesn’t owe anyone anything and isn’t trying to be like anyone else. If more people would accept and appreciate that she is such a genuine and honest person, I can’t help but surmise that these media exchanges would better experiences and hopefully carry over to better dialogue with other athletes as well.
It was a normal question, but I’m sure the question is not what caused that reaction. For those of you who don't understand the problem with the question: It's not 1955 any longer. Media members such as this guy who show up to press conferences and ask questions have nothing to do with Naomi Osaka being a popular athlete. She could never do another press conference for the rest of her life and it wouldn't make a bit of difference. She could communicate with the world through her social media accounts, as long as tennis was ok with it, and literally nothing would change. So he is starting from the false premise of "The Media Made You". Then, from that false premise, he's throwing her supposed distaste for it back in her face by asking her how she will balance said distaste with the benefits, basically saying "look at what the media has done for you, shouldn't you show it more respect?" when in fact, she is always so professional and so respectful in her public appearances. Just absolutely ridiculous, and a shameful, shameful line of questioning.
He didn’t start from the premiss that :the media made her’…that’s just in your head…he asked the valid question why it’s ok for her to avoid the tennis press ‘because they can be meanies’, while she has no problem using the press for her other activities…it’s a bit hypocritical no..she just wants full control so that nobody can ask her a difficult question…another sign of her weakness, not greatness…

The reporters' condescending tone and microaggression statements (plural) before the actual question was unnecessary. I said what I said. Like Naomi said it's more so "the timing". I agree with one of the commentators: she actually needed that question so she can better understand, she needs a break to better understand how to balance the two, because both can be true at the same time, and I'm sure the report knew that. It's called cognitive dissonance. Watch the entire interview. she was asked questions about her Dad and current events in Haiti 🇭🇹 prior to this clip. Smh
People also have to understand this girl's cultural background. "East Asians are accustom to read the air "kuuki wo yomu" of the situation through their cultural practices. Why is it so important for you to take a shot at Osaka? How does this affect you at all?
She was homeschooled from the age of nine so she could focus on tennis which means she's not been socialized like she should have. This could explain her inability to deal with personal adversity. Translation, she's been just another athlete who has coddled from an early age because of her natural talent and she expects the world owes her a living without question...
She’s so emotionally fragile, holy. Imagine if she ACTUALLY had a hard life, and had to deal with all the things that normal people had to deal with. I feel like her boyfriend accidentally makes her cry, like 20 times per day. Probably stressful for him
I blame her agent. Both Naomi and the reporter did well during the exchange. Naomi answered a well-constructed question the best she could. Nothing wrong with what happened. It's the agent that twisted the situation.
@@Zenon-fg4dw Isn't she like a good tennis player? Like her or not the skill is legit. Messi and Ronaldo don't stop being incredible players just because their last years haven't been the best.
@@luisyupari Yes, she is a good tennis player. A little mechanical but good. She has to be to win 4 slams. But, For me, a persona of a player is far more important if I am to enjoy watching a player. In my view, she has been spoiled by the obscene amount of money she has made, so much so that her commercial interests have taken over her tennis. Now, I fear she wants to be treated as a high perched socialite with white gloves than a tennis player.

@@fooloof1211 I don’t care to argue what’s a straw man. Fact is her tweets that get a lot of attention are statements that’s would get a lot of attention. And she knows this. She doesn’t have to tweet those thing if she doesn’t like it. She can control that.
@@fooloof1211 the people can’t help how they react also. So what? All that doesn’t matter. Point is she can just not tweet social justice tweets or whatever kind of tweets if she doesn’t like attention. She can’t complain about the attention afterward when she can just not tweet those things!

The title of this is catfishing. Suggesting the reporter was mean isn't true at all. Naomi really wanted to answer his question. She's trying so hard to beat this horrible, horrible depression, anxiety that she fights with every day! My heart goes out to her because I deal with it every day. But just like naomi she makes her self get up every morning and work and that is the best medicine! Doing nothing just makes it worst. I am proud of you Naomi because you want to get better, unlike so many people that don't even try.
@A P he’s up to the task, it’s proven. He talked about the presidency for crying out loud. He’s set the standard, but can’t expect everybody to follow the blueprint
I think she needs to take some real time off, just take the rest of the year off. I understand that she's going through a lot but I'm honestly tired of seeing these celebs crying, just take care of yourself!
Personally I see this more in my generation, generation Z, I’ve seen many people break down in situations where one is slightly uncomforted. This is what wokeness and CRT is doing to our future generations. Personally i think this will be downfall of the west. “Good times create weak men “.
It's getting annoying because now we have people who use the topic of mental health to avoid reality. This always happens when it gets trendy to start talking about a taboo subject. Now everyone I know in my age range suddenly has "anxiety". It's very hard to gauge someone like Osaka because no one can criticize her without someone calling you "racist" or "sexist" I used to feel bad for her because I felt everyone was attacking her for no reason now I just find her extremely annoying especially with the constant babying.
@@friedchicken4735 Me too. Same with Simone biles. They pulled out bcuz of mental health and anxiety. And notice that it's women doing this. If LeBron James or Stephen Curry did this then everyone would call them weak. But then Simone and Naomi did this and everyone is calling them strong. They both think they have it bad. What about disabled people in the Paralympics. U don't see them quitting. They try their hardest and then have to deal how they are everyday. Those Paralympians are blind and missing limbs and I don't see them quitting.
@@lizarrington3636 Simone pulled out because she experienced what is basically vertigo in the middle of the air, and so that she wouldn't hurt herself going forward. DO you know how dangerous gymnastic stunts are when you cannot perform at your best/normal state? Pulling out is smart (and extremely difficult after preparing so much for the Olympics), not weak. Vulnerability is not weak either. If LeBron James or Stephen Curry said they needed to take time off for their mental wellbeing, I would call them strong, because there is still this narrative from people like you that men cannot be emotional and have to be "strong" all the time. And paralympic athletes are the same as any other athlete, they're all perfectly healthy (mentally and physically) until they're not. That was an irrelevant comparison.
She's got to find a way to dismiss it if she wants to be one of the greatest ever. I know she's trying, but she has to remember that there are people trying to do their jobs, as well as her. The Haiti earthquake situation definitely didn't help things though. She already seems to be trying to cope with a lot of other things. @@douggranger4739 thats exactly what I was thinking when i saw it she is suffering from social anxiety, she should talk to a psychologist to help her get through press conference that she is obligated to do
My heart breaks for Naomi because mental illness is real and it effects ppl in different ways. I am a psychology major and I truly believe that Naomi suffers with Agoraphobia which is a condition that makes it hard for ppl to be around a lot of ppl with all eyes on them. Naomi is fine when she is on the tennis court because that is her element and ppl watching her play tennis is fine because she is in a zone. Doing pressers and interviews are difficult for her because of her condition. Prayers for Naomi.
I honestly think she started crying because of the misunderstanding that people & the media have that Naomi hates the media. I don't think she hates it moreso than she just wants to be able to focus on her game and her life and not have to worry about it. This perception of her is what made her cry, in my opinion.
She got caught in a moment where the reporter exposed how she likes the media for her social justice rhetoric but when the questions are directed at her, she's not as comfortable.
@@yenivah.4986 Yes it's obvious, she is an advocate for BLM, a violent hate group led up by Marxist's. She is a young deceived woman. The reporter's question was perfectly acceptable, we have freedom of speech in the US and freedom of press goes with it.

You are into your feelings I can tell with your exclamation point. This is about facts not feelings. If she is hurting, fine, decline the interview. Even when the woman said let's go to the next question, Naomi said, no I find this question very interesting. Maybe don't underestimate her ability to handle it. Your statement about cops shooting random innocent black people is the LIE that keeps on giving. In 2020 there were under 20 unarmed black persons shot dead by police, there were over 40 white persons shot dead. The thing is, the white people don't make your main stream media so you do not think it's happening. In almost every case of these so called "innocent" black men getting shot, they are resisting arrest. There are circumstances police are put under and have to make split second decisions that no one can empathize with, unless they have been in that situation. Blacks also commit crimes at a large disproportionate rate to any other race in the country so they have more altercations with police that leads to more death. No politics here, just the facts.
I think she needs more time to deal with it appears to me as a social anxiety disorder… I originally thought she started to cry because of the question regarding the Haiti Earthquake, but it appears the tears came before that question as a result of answering the reporter’s question about being able to “balance” her responsibilities and dealing with the media
Dude didn’t even ask her anything crazy. Sounds like all he meant was why don’t you like doing press conferences. Naomi who seems like she has anxiety should be training with her publicist on how to deal with questions. Because if she didn’t want to answer she should’ve just said I’ll get back to you on that next question and keep it pushing 💯

I also would say, Naomi is a deep thinker and definitely analyzes so much to the point she might overanalyze and become overwhelmed herself. I really think she needs to stay off of social media; we are just normal people with opinions because we see Naomi as a comparison of our own lives for better or worse. Those journalists are truly on her side to promote her and her sport; folks on IG and twitter are just looking for a famous groupie that we think she (Naomi) relates to. @Jmid14 - The reporter was simply doing his job. There was nothing wrong with his "tone" or his attitude. It was a perfectly legitimate question. Why do people like this news anchor and so many others in the news media insist that we handle female athletes like they're delicate little children? We're constantly lectured about women athletes not being treated equally, and yet they can't even handle a fraction of the scrutiny that male athletes are subject to. It's pathetic!

If your outside interests involve heavy media attention, but you hate press conferences, asking how you plan to balance the two in the future is a legitimate question. This is insane that that reporter is getting attacked for this. I didn’t get the sense that he felt entitled or that she owes her success to the media whatsoever , he just stated a fact and questioned her position. What’s wrong with that?
Just a cry baby. She better grow up. Yes, media can be rude and idiotic. But this time nothing wrong with it. Gotta mature.
You're taking a statement made by her Agent and making it her's. I don't even think that the Male Reporter is the one who bothered her. I think it was the Haiti earthquake thing that set her off. She seemed as even though she had a hard time expressing herself, she was fine with him, and his questions. I think the Haiti thing is what set off a very sensitive young woman. I also think that there are much deeper factors at play here, that I won't even touch right now. Just remember that she's of Mixed Ethnicity, and one of those sides are well known for shunning Mixed Race Offspring. That could have a lot to do with her Mental State.

@@VincentS988 it’s normal as dudes we neglect our feelings regularly so we get criticized harsher for it but women usually express themselves more so it’s more normalized for them to be more emotional in these scenarios
This wasn't an exchange and also she didn't say he was a bully either. She just cried, she had a lot going on like most of us in life.
Don't put the blame on the reporter. He was just doing his job and he went about it very respectfully.

It was a normal question, but I’m sure the question is not what caused that reaction. She’s obviously just stressed out, there is life outside of sports for athletes the same way there is life outside of our jobs for us. That was a professional exchange, nothing wrong with how either of them conducted themselves.
nah the difficult question for sure gave her anxiety, as she realized it would be a difficult question to answer on the spot

For those of you who don't understand the problem with the question:
It's not 1955 any longer.

There are plenty of people saying, "No lives matter till black lives matter." Meanwhile, no one says that black lives don't matter. That is the lie.
Just say that you hate doing interviews after losing and love doing them after winning.
It clear as day you don't watch tennis. The issue is that she doesn't like to do interview before matches
Exactly...these new athletes different smh
@@maximbelmont4641 🙄
Lol straight facts
@@maximbelmont4641 You right.
This was heartbreaking to watch 😓
Was it???
There wasn't no bullying there.
Women are emotional
Men are logical
Thanks for more proof of this truth
And that's a bad thing because?
False. Women show emotion more, men show it less. Both experience it the same. Men are not more logical. Do your f***ing research before spouting stupid s*** from your filthy mouth.
@@kieransoregaard-utt8 "show emotion" vs "are emotional" . Why do you think its the latter? or do u want want the latter to be true and are just clueless feminist just trying to win internet points? I can guarantee you its the former because in just this instance its advantageous for her to not show emotion, the only reason she showed emotion was because she was emotional and could not "not control the show of emotion"
@@kieransoregaard-utt8 Okay keyboard warrior 😘
@@kieransoregaard-utt8 It’s clear “men” like you arnt more logical. So in the words of MJ
calm down… get some help😂
I have absolutely no idea what triggered any emotional response.
And she's far more talented than the average person on social media.
True
She's closer to a bully for putting a name tag on the poor reporter who I assume didn't even mean anything by it..
"As a black asian woman she has sovereignty that any white man, white woman or white institution is bound to respect." good for her for being able to stay with her legitimate emotions.
