There seems to be a trend with Aussies, childlike enthusiasm, dangerous/venomous animals and a desire to provoke said animals... Love it. Keep it up :D Just... please don't get stung by any of them.
+Charlie Ringström Ive done some videos with the man himself, Destin, from SED and he is a huge supporter of us. SED is an AWESOME channel and if we can achieve 1/10 of what he has done then we will be happy vegemites :-)
+The Nature of Science Also found this channel through Smarter every day. Applying for a Bachelor of Science Marine Biology at James Cook next semester.
Nope nope nope nope nope nope. Pick up scorpion and put him in a jar to take back to the lab? Nope. More like, put myself into a scorpion proof jar and roll myself back to the lab.
+urgetester Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for taking the time to give us some feedback, it's much appreciated. We're hoping to get some more subs too.
I just adore how enthusiastic this guy is in all his videos. Such a great presenter, and I imagine he'd be a great teacher and co-worker. A real love for science is pretty rare in people. I'm glad youtube lets us see people like him when they would usually remain rather anonymous and unknown outside of their fields.
That guy is just really fun to watch. He could be like "Okay guys, in this episode we are going to find out if blending the peanut butter and jelly together tastes better than jelly and peanut butter on each slice of bread, and that is just the nature of sandwiches"
Yay! Love this channel, thank you for the new video! Florida checking in - I've been stung by a scorpion. I was around 4 years old and lightly stepped on it. I must have righteously ticked the thing off because what I can remember is screaming my bloody head off in pain. Though I was 4 at the time...I'd like to think 26 years later I might have been able to suck it up. Eh, probably not. :)
+The Nature of Science I am travelling to Mt Isa followed by Cairns in June, I can drive down to Townsville - I guess it a 4 hr journey. It will be great meeting the prof. in person.
+Pope “Iamsepope” Poperino Thanks for the feedback, we're glad you're enjoying the videos. I think we're the new kids on the block and it's going to take some time to get our subs up. I think it's also about where our content is shared which will drive traffic here ie reddit, buzzfeed, wittyfeed etc
2:50 I'm happy to hear that coming from the authority on venom. I was taught that as kid when shown the difference between our local bark scorpion and the other less dangerous cousins.
Great vid as usual! You guys need to get with SmarterEveryDay and Veritasium more often so you can tap into those subscribers, I'm sure most will start following you with great content like this!
+Akram Jerab Thanks for the support. Love to do some more stuff with SED and Destin. He is a great bloke, his channel is awesome, but he is on the other side of the globe! Having said that we have discussed me going to the good ol U S of A to do some stuff with him, I just have to find the dollars to get there!
Jamie Seymour If you keep posting regular content I'm sure the YT channel will pay for the trips. Just remember we're in the internet era, you guys don't have to be physically next to each other. Anyway, thanks for the response and I'm looking forward to your next vid!
+Akram Jerab yes, that's true, but its WAY WAY easier to do stuff when you are in the same geographic location :-) However, I'm now thinking we could do something in the USA and Australia at the same time. Like the simpsons episode of does water in the toilet go in different directions (yes i know it doesnt but I think you get the idea). At any rate, your suggestion has got my brain working! I'll chat with the team (and Destin) and see what we can come up with. THANKS!
You may have the machine that goes "ping", but what about the most expensive machine? As I understand it, the director is quite proud of the leasing scheme of that one.
+Jamie Seymour He's referencing Monty Python, meaning of life. Unfortunately I am nerdy enough to know that. Some silly questions from an academic here! For the analysis of the venom, what kind of detector do you have hooked up to your LC? Did you do MS/MS ID to confirm the identity of the venom as well or did you rely upon something like UV absorbance pattern with a reference standard? I'm not a biologist myself (toxicology/pharmacology here working in drug development) so am super interested in the characterisation of the venoms and their exact composition. Do you have a published paper available on this so I can take a squiz at the methods/results?
Doctor Seymour you are amazing I love your laugh especially you really enjoy your job and have a lot of fun while being a great and serious scientist. You are an example!
I love your videos, I was dying to find any of your films when I saw you on SmarterEveryDay. If only they were longer, nonetheless i appreciate the quality of the videos too.
+miran sabljic thanks. Yes, its a trade off on the length. Id love to do a full length film (if there is a production house out there that wants to do a doco, the team is open to it (hope nat geo, discovery channel, etc read this!) but we have been told that for youtube they need to be short.
Not really, there is a part or its tail called the knuckle and is is whats a ttached to the stinger and can move co - dependantly, that what you opick the stinger up by. :)
+ChirrupForScience Embrace your weird bc we think they're awesome too! Of course the guys in our team wouldn't say it was adorable but our resident mermaid would :)
lol at cruelty comments. If shocking some scorpions is cruel to you (and for medicine ffs), be grateful you haven't seen anything worse in your life that you could be focusing on instead.
DIFERENCIAS CREATIVAS proof that the scorpion was not scared/scared enough Was that the Scorpion would have stung him since if it scared it would consider him a predator
+Mauricio Mpd Oi fantastic to hear from you and glad to hear you enjoy our videos. Oh how we love Brazil, it's on our bucketlist. So many amazing animals and research being conducted. Oh and the food and the people, the dancing....
that was an adult scorpion. while it's true younger scorpions don't have good control of the venom they inject, its the smaller species that tend to produce deadlier neurotoxin.
Nice video as always ! I'm passing my license in France in preparation for my coming to JCU ! I hope that my health will not prevent me from being accepted :') Keep up the good work Dr Seymour !
I've got to say, this is the first video of yours I've seen so far, just found your channel. I am absolutely shocked that you've only got 51,000 subs. Disgrace. All them big TH-camrs with millions of subs, who don't do anything, and don't deserve such fame. At least I'm happy I've subbed to you and not them
this channel has become one of my favorites. Pretty fascinating. Dr. Seymour, did u ever have any interactions with Steve Irwin? idk if that's completely ignorant to ask. but im curious, it wouldnt surprise me if u both crossed paths
+Tate Miller Yep, certainly did. I was with Steve the day he died. He was without a doubt the most passionate animal conservationist I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. A pretty amazing individual to say the least. we lost an awesome bloke when he passed. CROCS RULE!
+Saahil “The Nukatopian” Dhar In another video, he shows all the scars he has from handling box jellyfish when they catch them for research. He doesn't know what fear is.
I found this channel after seeing the frog heart video, and it's the best one out there if you're interested in venom, I'm recommending it to everyone.
You were just casually roaming around a rainforest capturing scorpions with your bare hands? you got Brave wilderness jealous lol You earn a subscribe gentleman.
Having grown up in the most callous times of animal-experimentation I was deeply to see the Doc let that scorpion go in the end. I'm pretty sure that was just for show but liked it anyway. Because maybe it's not. One CAN expect good things from a guy actually using a machine that goes "bing"!
“What animal changes its venom depending on how scared it is?” “I dunno the thumbnail, title, and hints suggest scorpions but your questioning can only mean it’s raccoons.”
And this is an exact example of why my zoology professor says basic research is necessary because it can be used in applied research. Any normal person might ask "Why do we need to know this shit? I'm not going around scaring scorpions." Then, by the end of the video, "Oh, we can fluoresce cancer cells and find them in the body." No way would I have ever come up with that idea.
This is a man who LOVES his job. Beautiful to watch.

Come on now, you know that almost all animal presenters are like that.
Yea, I want what he's on too...
I bet that scorpion had some stories to tell when it got home.
+The Count of Monte Disco I'm sure it did!
"Honey, you won't believe what happened! They kept shoving a dead rat in my face for 4 weeks, it scared the venom out of me!" hue
then theyd tie me down with a rubber band and shock the fuck outta me! oh love it was horrible.
Vegan Clorox for real
Nobody believed him...
"Here's a deadly creature. We're going to piss it off and see it that makes it even deadlier." Fuckin' aussies, man.
+Hirumaru the Rageaholic What can I say? :-)
Deadly? People need to specify whether something is deadly? Down here everything is deadly.
+Boglenight XD
Jayhawk2k16
One time I went camping and a scorpion made it's way into my shot glass which I had left unattended, you can probably see where that went.
Boglenight It went to a special place right ._.
Fun little fact. That pill bug he picks up in the beginning of the video isn't actually an insect. It's an isopod, closer related to crustaceans.
hidanprime Most so called insects are not insects at all.
Woodlouce
hidanprime its latin name is isopoda, that would explain a lot😉
No it's actually called a rolly pollie
They’re rolling pollies
There seems to be a trend with Aussies, childlike enthusiasm, dangerous/venomous animals and a desire to provoke said animals... Love it. Keep it up :D Just... please don't get stung by any of them.
Keen Trasborg we enjoy life! We like to have fun!
Scorpions are not highly dangerous, in general.
Rip Steve Irwin my childhood hero :''(
Keen Trasborg he just loves his job how’s that childlike?
Most under-subbed channel on TH-cam.
+G-Games thanks. Subb away peeps :)
Agreed! Hopefully you can make some kind of collab with Destin to promote the channel!
+Charlie Ringström Ive done some videos with the man himself, Destin, from SED and he is a huge supporter of us. SED is an AWESOME channel and if we can achieve 1/10 of what he has done then we will be happy vegemites :-)
+Jamie Seymour Yeah, but you didn't have your channel to promote back then! :-)
+Charlie Ringström hmmmm good point ! :-)

Scorpion at the end: “I’ve seen some shit”
That guy is just really fun to watch. He could be like "Okay guys, in this episode we are going to find out if blending the peanut butter and jelly together tastes better than jelly and peanut butter on each slice of bread, and that is just the nature of sandwiches"
+Mr. Midnight not sure how to reply to that ;-)
Jamie Seymour Haha any reply is awesome. Keep up the amazing work!
+Mr. Midnight POTATOES
Really cool experiment. Would have been neat to see your chromatogram from the FPLC to see the ratio of the two proteins in the venom.
This channel defintely deserves a lot more recognition
Aussies... the mad lads. Goes out into the jungle at night in shorts looking for scorpions
Yay! Love this channel, thank you for the new video! Florida checking in - I've been stung by a scorpion. I was around 4 years old and lightly stepped on it. Hell of a job, scaring scorpions for money
Yeah we think we have pretty cool jobs. At the end of the day it helps us to better understand these animals and how we can treat incidents.
The Nature of Science scaring? They electroshock the scorpion!
They do this so idiots like you can be treated in hospitals with the right antvenoms

I was hopeing that was a real rat

so what was the point of the "what am i" intro if you put scorpion in the title...
"What are you doing playing with those bugs?"
Curing cancer.
"Oh. Nice"
what's the point in glowing under uv light for certain animals?

U grab it's stinger
Not really, there is a part or its tail called the knuckle and is is whats a ttached to the stinger and can move co - dependantly, that what you opick the stinger up by. :)
U literally just explained how he did it
Scorpion to its family: "I GOT ABDUCTED BY ALIENS I SWEAR"
Am I weird for finding scorpions quite adorable?
+ChirrupForScience Embrace your weird bc we think they're awesome too! Of course the guys in our team wouldn't say it was adorable but our resident mermaid would :)

+lennutrajektoor cool hey :-)
This is Like Brave Wilderness From Coyote Peterson
Jason Goldsmith except these fellows are actually doing something not just getting stung/bit for$$
Don't think I've ever seen a guy get so excited about finding a potentially dangerous animal before.
lol at cruelty comments. If shocking some scorpions is cruel to you (and for medicine ffs), be grateful you haven't seen anything worse in your life that you could be focusing on instead.

I think killing a Brown tentacle monster using electricity is cruel
Really enjoying this channel! Keep up the great work
+Alyce Jackson thanks, appreciate the comments
is there any proof of this? how you scare the scorpion? is the scorpion scare all ready by you just holding it?
you know if he is scared if he try to defend him self insteed of run away or attack
DIFERENCIAS CREATIVAS proof that the scorpion was not scared/scared enough
Was that the Scorpion would have stung him since if it scared it would consider him a predator
I love your videos, i get so happy when i see a new one in my inbox! keep it up.
cheers from Brazil!
+Mauricio Mpd Oi fantastic to hear from you and glad to hear you enjoy our videos. Oh how we love Brazil, it's on our bucketlist. So many amazing animals and research being conducted. Oh and the food and the people, the dancing....
in my opinion that is a baby scorpion the smaller they are the more potent only because they are not able to control there venom
that was an adult scorpion. while it's true younger scorpions don't have good control of the venom they inject, its the smaller species that tend to produce deadlier neurotoxin.
Tenebrio morio was it really wow that was tiny for an adult
***** it's about average size for a California common scorpion, if not a bit skinny.
wow those are in California i never new we had any out here thats awesome thank you

JJ DV why are you responding back? You seem really hypocritical....
This channel is fantastic.
+kingjacoblear Glad you think so :)

+L Roussaux Thanks for you feedback, I'll let the team know :)
An ad with Rhett and Link played before the video and I got so excited for a sec thinking that this was one of their videos lol.
He is the Most unprofessional but scientific person I've ever seen.................I LOVE IT!
I too love the machine that goes "ping"
at first when he gave the description i thought the animal was a dog then i figured out it was a rabbit

I guessed "scorpion" immediately. Probably because I searched for "scorpion" and the title of the video says "scorpion" in it.
This is very entertaining and educating! New sub!
That button looks to be in quite the perilous position there...
Why are we in the Rainforest?
Well, we're trying to find Rainforest scorpions!
