    This is actually insanely inspiring. I'm still in high school, but have been taking all my classes at a college, and I've consistently been a B-C student. I dream of becoming a physician, and I'm willing to commit to the grind. I'm not letting my past fuck up my future! Great video!

    I will be heading to veterinary school at Ross at the end of this month. To be honest, I was getting cold feet almost instantly after acceptance and the self-doubt started creeping up again. I actually did the same thing you did and just applied to one school, Ross. But watching some of your videos and others like it is helping me stay confident! Keep it up.

  • @Darkrider6970
    @Darkrider6970 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    Only mainly consider St. George's University, Ross, SABA, AUC, or AUA (and I cannot even vouch for all of these but they are the ones that at least have some sort of minimum legitimate record). Even these schools have major issues but at least you have a chance to succeed and become a physician in the US. Also, first try to get in the US by applying broadly to both MD and DO schools before considering the caribbean route.

      Here in Alabama we have a rural medicine program at UAB and I know a few people that got in there on their first try. The thing is though, I think this only applies to Alabama residents and you have to really sell the whole "country bumpkin" style and show a unique interest in family medicine (you can go into anything). So, those of you that read this and live in a rural Alabama area, consider this heavily!

    Whichever school has the most exams during a semester or term (I think AUC does) and most opportunities to show you can do the work and do well is the best - schools that brag about placement of residents are advertising themselves, and they are all for profit, so that's good for them, and those maybe good schools for some, but in general you want to go to school that fits your style of studying and school that will not actively try to fail you so that they can fit people into limited rotation spots... go to school where the same number of students who check in also checks out at graduation (maybe 5% or so dropout rate is fine, but not 25-40+%)...

    Now, I realize that this is several years old, and I can only speak to how things are now, but SGU lets students retake up to two semesters of basic sciences. I haven't had to do that (knock on wood) but there is definitely some leeway if you don't immediately step up to the plate. will say you are right about the "no bullshit, we're starting now better bring your A game", but they aren't just going to kick you out the minute you fail either. I think a huge part of it is they have TONS of resources available to help students succeed, and they have gotten to the point where there reputation is so good that they get their pick of the Caribbean applicants... they only accept about 45% of applicants, basically picking out the ones who show the most promise. having that ability to start with makes it easier to pump out high quality students and maintain shockingly low attrition rates for a Caribbean school.

    Hey no matter what med school you went to you will always be considered smarter than a silly engineer like me! Hehehe! I enjoy watching your videos as I get to see what career paths are out there for Surgeons and doctors. Also there is a huge misconception around engineering as well - we are not allowed to call ourself engineers if we dont have a professional engineer registration. You have to do 4-5 years undergrad in engineering and another 4-5 years you work as an Engineer in training under the supervision of a certified engineer. So it takes us as well 9-10 years to call our self an engineer.

      if you're from NY state, make sure you applied for a scholarship in exchange for working in a under serviced area. People think this means Alaska. It actually includes NY. I'm not sure of how long you need to work in these hospitals, but the good news is that if you do a residency in NY, that counts toward your side of the deal.

    Let’s go SGU! Hands down medical school is difficult. But this school provides you with all the support that you need. Also, I don’t know if this is a recent change for SGU but they do let you retake the term all over again for free without getting a grade the second time around. They have different cohorts that caters to the need of students. Just started my first term ! Great video Doc!

      Nothing's impossible. A "C" in Chemistry is not the end of the world. Ive helped people get into medical school with 2.5 undergrad GPA's, and in the lower 10% on the MCATS. Use whatever skills you're best at to get what you want. Be courteous, clean, and never try to outshine anyone in as far as material. There were people, including myself with beautiful cars (PORSCHE's, BMW"s & MERCEDES). There's attending who don't drive those kinda cars. I would never have got one if I'd known the type of trouble they make for me. II had a different Rolex for each day of the week, great clothes, and I was indirectly looking for trouble.

    I realize that there are "late bloomers" and many who come to medicine later in life. That speaks well of them for successfully undertaking a more difficult path. But, if you are strongly considering a career as a physician, by far the smoothest pathway will be to buckle down and work as hard as you can in HS and college. That's the best prep. for the MCAT. Do well and gain admission to the best U.S. school you can find which grants an M.D. degree. But remember that med. school is only the beginning of a NEVER-ENDING educational process. We are all always struggling just to keep up let alone trying to advance our skills. I would definitely NOT recommend a medical career to anyone who was not highly motivated. Over the years I've told several to do dentistry instead. Seriously!

    • @rebekatalebi8046

    Hi! I was wondering if you have any info on programs like IUHS and Oceania. Do you know if these are viable medical programs and if students are actually eligible to get licensed in the US.?They have a distance learning for preclinicals and clinical rotations are done in the US. Just curious to see if you have info on this.

    At St. Matthews do you have to take the comp exam (I think that's what it is called) and score a certain score before you are allowed to take the step 1 exam??

    • @drbuckparker
      @drbuckparker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no i did not have to do that exam at st matts

    • @fndfnd1
      @fndfnd1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply! Do you know what I am talking about... I think there are some schools that require students to score a certain score on the comp (pretty much practice USMLE 1 test) before they can even take the actual USMLE 1 test. And unfortunately some students cant pass the comp test.

    • @BullsEye415
      @BullsEye415 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The school I attend has a comp/exit exam. It's a pain to have to worry about another (major) exam before Step study, but they are making sure you are able to pass Step 1 on first try. This is how the schools are able to advertise a 98% or 99% first time Step pass rate, however, it is also beneficial to the students. Students who don't pass comp, most likely will not pass Step. So this gives them extra time to study to do better on the Step exam.

    Hey I am an Indian medical aspirant and I want to come to carribean medical schools for my Medical studies. There is one particular caribbean medical school, Spartan health & Science university in st. Lucia which is getting crazy promoted in my country by a lot of admission agents. I heard many of their grads are actually doing good and working as a physician in many states of the US. Is this university legitimately good for my prospects of my future as a doctor in US? I am confused and sceptic that I might be fooled by these admission agents, so I might ask it from an actual expert. Will appreciate your help and response 🙂

      I've seen most, and throughout my career, Ive met Drs who were from every corner of the earth. Do you know what the difference is between an offshore vs foreign medical school? look into it. that but if info explains why your a better choice for a residency position. I found medical school difficult. try clinging onto someone who seems intelligent and can help explain things to you. Again, where you went to school doesn't really matter. do well on your exams, try doing well in school, and present yourself inn the best light possible.

    Sir i would like to get some reviews from you regarding a Caribbean medical school in JAMAICA,known as ALL AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES(AAIMS, Jamaica in the town of St.Elizabeth facing Black river).
    Sir how is that medical school with regards to getting an MD degree and for usa hospitals clinical rotations?( Also including the Indian students that are there at AAIMS)
    It would be lovely and extremely helpful if you would make a session on AAIMS JAMAICA including these points along with your personal reviews about it.
