In a world where ignorance, drama and sex is considered entertainment and sells itself, anybody could be in your position if they are willing to take a risk and put themselves out there. It’s different to study and learn the mechanics of whatever field you’re interested in and to speak about your industry from a knowledgeable place. It’s the difference in being successful in front of or behind the camera. All of you have educated people that help you behind the scenes.

  • @welchless
    @welchless 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

I see it as accelerated studying when one chooses not to go to college and/or unable to. It's by far not always easy to be successful without a degree. Then again, you can be unsuccessful with a degree.
But I digress. Celebrities who receive these honors after years of demonstating success in their field(s) should be recognized if a college chooses to do so. I mean, why not? These universities/colleges use some of these celebrities as examples in their curriculums all the time such as Prince, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Dr. Dre, etc. What these people I mentioned have in common? Never went to college, and yet they are used constantly as examples when it comes to their artistry. Same with business moguls and so on.
The reality is, there wasn't a school many moons ago when people learned music, art, science, the list goes on. People had to just rest on their talent, hustle, and drive.
And I am by no means saying people shouldn't go to school. If you can afford it and it's what you want, go for it. That degree, especially if your family is one who doesn't have any or you don't have a family, is still a great achievement.

  • @kyb433

You go to school to get a degree that says that you have knowledge of a field that would otherwise be difficult to obtain without experience. The degree potentially opens doors to the related career. Honorary degrees are symbolic awards recognizing the achievements of those who achieved success in fields without having taken the traditional path (college) to acquire the knowledge needed for the career path. It says that you've acquired the requisite knowledge and achieved the success expected of someone who would have completed a degree associated with the field and henceforth pursued a successful career in the field! As someone who has been a teacher/educator for 24 years, it's fine if someone is awarded an honorary degree by a college. However, I won't respect it because the degree wasn't earned. Also, many teachers/professors/educators don't respect an honorary degree because of the time we put in to get our Master's or our Doctorate. For those who have an honorary degree, don't flaunt it because if you do, those who actually earned their degree will shut you down quickly.

I’m in medical school becoming a doctor and I don’t really care about these degrees lol. They are a way to tell someone who gives back to those schools and communities, thanks. So Yh, I’m not threatened haha

When I get my Honorary degree - Doctorate. Called me Dr. I paid for my bachelor's degree and Masters Degree through student loans. I want to street credit and industry credit over coursework.

I think honorary makes sense for someone who has mastered something that is actually taught at a school. Like for instance Mark Zuckerberg got an honorary from Harvard, but I am sure no one at Havard can teach him about coding. Cthagod got one but a teacher can’t teach him about communication. So I think it make sense for people who have mastered their craft outside of the classroom.

he can learn alot about communications... just because he's syndicated doesn't mean he knows everything... have you seen the episodes of any of his shows when it's just him and nobody to make fun of? This claim to popularity is making fun and making a fool of people like we used to do in the hood and people relate to that... when envy isn't there or taylor or wax isn't there on brilliant idiot he doesn't know what to do or say talks about dicks for 45 mins...

Depending on the occupation, most people would likely prefer to learn from the person with the honorary degree over the person with the real degree. Experience is typically the best teacher.

As someone who is working on their PhD, I honestly never seen a problem with it or it being called a "degree"(this just me). Now I'm not going to lie there are some "academics" out there that hates it and looks at it like Dj Envy. I agree with charla, its not that serious.

I agree with both. As a person with 3 degrees…I don’t think it’s that deep. But if it makes ppl feel better call it a certificate of recognition. I think my beef is some of them walking around calling themselves Dr. lol it’s honorary you don’t get the title of doctor from an honorary degree. Plus it’s being handed out a lil too loosely these days. Any old influencer is getting them. I think Charlemagne is very deserving of his when you hear his full story but these ppl who just at the start of their careers who have made little contributions….yeah idk. Either way it don’t affect those of us with degrees cuz it’s not like they’re competing in the job search with those honorary degrees. We in 2 diff lanes

Charlamagne is absolutely right about this topic. It seems that Jess & Envy's real issue is simply with theb word degree. When you put in work, you put in work, period. No matter how you did it, you did it. Nothing wrong with that recognition. 💯

As a Master’s degree holder, who cares? I got the degree for myself and my life and it paid off based on my career. Giving people honorary degrees doesn’t change anything because it still doesn’t allow them to compete with me in the job market so it has no negative effect on me.

I agree with Charla. Everyone working on acquiring a degree are attempting to achieve the expertise and knowledge the honorary degree recipients have achieved. The honorary degrees given to most, not all, are given to those who are already great in a profession.

I am a college grad who sees and understands both sides of the argument.
There is a value to a degree but most ppl don't understand how society works. The issue is there are only but so many ideal jobs and I know alot of communications grads who believe they deserve the "spotlight" more than a "Charlemagne". I will admit I am even annoyed when he chooses the "entertaining personality" route oppose to the truth, info, and proper analysis route. I believe I speak for a lot of his critics by saying referring to the truth not being important cause a lie is more entertaining.
That being said the way him, Schultz, Alex, and Chris broke down the conflicts in Israel/palestine/middle east when things hit the fan on the Brilliant Idiots podcast deserves pulitzer prize recognition... no other podcast or news entity has even came come to the analysis they did and I believe it helped put alot in context for alot of ppl... peace, love, and light
