By far and away the sexxiest sounding female vocalist of my time, that deep husky low end and incredible power and range made Chrissie a legend. Amazing singer.
I've seen the P's 4 times from clubs to arena's, but saw them 5-6 years ago as backup to Neil Young...TOTALLY blown away by their performance that night. Never remembered them as Blowing me away but that performance was absolutely in my top 5 live shows ever. Rock on!
I was 17, and at the top of the stairs in the audience. She rocked it so hard and I was transfixed. She walked over to the desk on fidgeted with her pick. I kept saying "put down the pick, put down the pick". At the very end she put the pick on the desk and stood up and waved goodnight to the crowd. The lights went on, and the audience gets cleared pretty quickly as the band plays an outro. I wanted that pick and was singular about it. The whole audience exits out to the top. I somehow just hugs to the right and went against the traffic. By the time I got to the bottom of the stairs the last people of the front row were exiting. The final two came out as I was coming down and in a perfect moment they went down onto the stage floor instead of up, they were special guests, an older couple. As the NBC page clicked open the ropes to allow them in I found myself walking right in along with them. Eight steps later and I was up at dave's desk, grabbed Chrissie's pick, and turned around to see the view from there (wow). At that moment I had no more plan, well I never did, but I have always snuck in well. This one was the best ever. I went over and said hi to the band as they struck their final note. They gave a polite nod as I have learned one gets when they don't know who you are but assume i supposed to be there and could be related to somebody higher up. i then turned around and since the audience was clear that whole thing was closed so I just went through those doors we were all familiar with. The Pretenders, inus Chrissie were back there so I said a couple words to them. I knew where they played the night before so I asked them, once again they obliged a nice banter and answer and otherwise were just standing around that weird hallway, which was surreal to be wandering through. after another minute i wandered through to the elevators where i found my friends who I had gone with. one of which interned at SNL and said "there you are, I wanted to introduce you to Dave!" As if it couldn't had gotten better. She introduced me in some side room that was filled gear. He shook my hand, was super polite, and then grabbed a styrofoam commissary tray and signed, in Huge Purple sharpie "to Kevin, Hope you survive the meal - David Letterman" We left and I brought the tray to my dorm and showed my friends. NYC was the greatest fun. I called my brother and told him to look for me because sure enough I was in an earlier segment when I got to stick my head out in the aisle (as a dummy head rolled down the stairs, I hogged the shot). Would love to see that segment. The pick and signed tray and decades long gone, but I should have treasured them, they were both exceptional.
Chrissie was so gorgeous, had such a great smile (that we didn't often see) and was (still is) a very cool dresser. Would have loved to have seen the interview portion of this video.
Dave really liked them. Also, I'm always amazed that Paul jams along with most of the bands and it just sounds like he's always been part of their band.
Loved the Tense Experts and The Oil Tasters. Caleb, the sax player for The Oil Tasters was a friend of mine. Seems we were the only 2 saxophonists in the punk scene. He did sound for many bands including the Femmes when they toured Europe. He occasionally played sax with them. Remember Century Hall? The Rock-A-Dials played there a lot, were some of our best shows. Early 80's were some of the best times in my life. Thanks for the good wishes. The Pretenders show will be great. Have fun!
Hadn't looked at any responses to my videos in a while. Thanks so much gubban159. The first Pretenders album was my favorite too, and this is one of my favorite songs. Saw The Pretenders in Milwaukee on their first tour of the US, my ticket says Thurs. April 24, 1980 at a medium sized theater/bar called The Palms. What a fantastic show it was, one of my all-time favorite concerts.
This affected me greatly when it originally aired. This TH-cam version doesn’t really capture how amazing the performance actually was. Maybe someday a higher quality version will be available.
Read recently a Ray Davies interview. He said the Pretenders version of this song is his favorite Kinks cover of all time. I was fortunate this year to see Ray Davies and the Pretenders sing this same song during their respective 2009 tours. Both were great!
Wish I could see them this Tuesday. Spent my whole life in Milwaukee/Waukesha area but moved away for work last July. Now live in Charleston. Cool the Pretenders discovered the Femmes. A rockabilly band I played in the early 80's, The Rock-A-Dials, practiced on a weekday in the basement of The Starship on 4th and Michigan. After practice I would sometimes see the Femmes playing upstairs to a very small crowd. They were virtually unknown then, even locally. Give me an update on the Pretenders show
IMO the #1 female singer/songwriter/player in Rock 'n Roll .... EVER. The only version (LP or Live) of any Kinks song that I like better than the original.
Tremendous. The production on original recording by the Pretenders had a great sound and I was a bit skeptical that a live version would match up. It isn’t the same but really great in its own way. You can tell Dave really liked it.
"Stop Your Sobbing" It is time for you to stop all of your sobbing Yes it's time for you to stop all of your sobbing oh oh oh There's one thing you gotta do To make me still want you Gotta stop sobbing now Yeah yeah stop it stop it It is time for you to laugh instead of crying Yes it's time for you to laugh so keep on trying oh oh oh There's one thing you gotta do To make me still want you Gotta stop sobbing now Yeah yeah stop it stop it Each little tear that falls from your eyes Makes, makes me want To take you in my arms and tell you To stop all your sobbing There's one thing you gotta do To make me still want you And there's one thing you gotta know To make me want you so Gotta stop sobbing now Yeah yeah stop it stop it. ❤❤
I'm a Dusty Springfield fan too. There hadn't been many great female pop/rock singers since the 60's until The Pretenders came onto the scene. I sure took notice. Saw The Pretenders in Milwaukee on their first tour of the US, just found my ticket, Thurs. April 24, 1980 at a medium sized theater/bar called The Palms. This was when "Brass in Pocket" first hit our radio. Didn't think that song was a good choice to represent the bands music. I liked the song, and most everything they've done.
Pretenders at SF Civic in 1981. Chrissie always had a strict no cameras policy but a friend and I between us snuck in his camera and a few lenses and were a few feet back from the stage. Pretenders come on and Greg is shooting some pics, Chrissie sees him and leans over with a big Johnny Cash fuck you finger salute then during the guitar break goes to the side of the stage and motions towards us with her head to ine of her crew. This guy and another guy start making their way towards us through the crowd but while this is going on Greg advances the film and puts it into one of those small round containers with the plastic cap which i stick in my pocket while Greg puts a new roll of film into the camera just before the security guys arrive and pull us out of the crowd and into the foyer where the security guy orders Greg to give him the film. Greg says no, the guy grabs the camera and Greg pulls it back and says ok, jesus, calm down.. Gives the guy the blank roll of film, the guy exposes it and throws it down then throws us out of the building. Greg develops the film later and still has that great shot of Chrissie leaning down flipping us off, her mouth forming the f as she's telling us to fuck off.
Thanks nauort23, Sid McGinnis has toured and/or recorded with Peter Gabriel, Carly Simon, Dire Straits, Robert Fripp, Laurie Anderson, Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Paul Simon. Will Lee has recorded and/or toured with Bette Midler, Mariah Carey, Carly Simon, George Benson, Steely Dan, B.B. King, Cat Stevens, Ringo Starr, Cyndi Lauper, James Brown, Cher, Al Green, Billy Joel, Liza Minnelli, Frank Sinatra, Carl Perkins, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, David Sanborn, Natalie Cole and Roy Buchanan.
Ray was supposed to come to our area in Pa. but cancelled due to low ticket sales....our area is 50 years behind the times. Love the Kinks!! Esp. Ray! Did you read his book entitled "X-Ray"?
By far and away the sexxiest sounding female vocalist of my time, that deep husky low end and incredible power and range made Chrissie a legend. Amazing singer.
She holds the note at 02:39 for 13 seconds and still has some left for a little yell, what an incredible performer, wow.
I bet she can still hold it just as well. I saw a few vids of her current live shows. She's still fing amazing!
I've seen the P's 4 times from clubs to arena's, but saw them 5-6 years ago as backup to Neil Young...TOTALLY blown away by their performance that night. Never remembered them as Blowing me away but that performance was absolutely in my top 5 live shows ever. Rock on!
Amazing Ray Davies track...Chrissie rocks like no other female!
Chrissie Hynde with the Totally underrated voice! Amazing.
Chrissy is one of the few who sounds just as good live as in the studio. The original lineup of the Pretenders also sounded great live.
fucking right!! :) Cheers to that.
I've heard a lot of versions of her singing this, but this one is by far the greatest I've heard!

What a cool memory!

Magnetic.
she ended the show. no interview. i was there. she was phenomenal.
Still my favorite Pretenders song. Loved it the first time I heard it.
Kinks song...
@@kevinquinn4499 yes, and covered here by The Pretenders. It's MY favorite Pretenders song, too.
Great performance ! I fell in love with Chrisse that night! A true rocker!
Shes so great !!!
Dave really liked them. Also, I'm always amazed that Paul jams along with most of the bands and it just sounds like he's always been part of their band.
Wow, I remember this. And it's nice to see a great female artist keeping her clothes on.
Princess beautiful love Chrissie ❤️🌹😍🇲🇽

Man, how can ya not live Chrissie?
Drop dead gorgeous. My high school crush. Her voice is unreal
The worlds most dangerous band is on point here, her voice !
This affected me greatly when it originally aired. This TH-cam version doesn’t really capture how amazing the performance actually was. Maybe someday a higher quality version will be available.

That was AWESOME!
What a great band and awesome song! Letterman had good taste!
Yes, this is a great song!!!!

I was in love with Chrissie in high school back in 81.
I was, too. And still am!
Those bangs, the hoops, and that style.
IMO the #1 female singer/songwriter/player in Rock 'n Roll .... EVER.

Pure class!
Cool Guitar Chrissie!
Chrissie Hynde is so my personal hero! I want to be her!!!
Still have the 45 (Chrissis, Debbie Harry, Siouxsie Sioux)
Pave the way for many of the females in the music today!
I'm sure I've posted this before but...the greatest white pop/rock female voice since Dusty Springfield.
She was always so cool!
80s New Wave rock rules!
they are truly great
I LOVE HER.......
the first song i heard by them, and went out buying all their albums from the 5 track vinyl ep on........
i'm in love....
My hero!

Will Lee on guitar and Paul Shaffer on piano helping out. Great song well done.
I could swear around 2:10 she starts singing "Gotta Stop Sotamayor". How did she know back then? AMAZING!!!
So talented
Bad Ass!!
Thanks nauort23, Sid McGinnis has toured and/or recorded with Peter Gabriel, Carly Simon, Dire Straits, Robert Fripp, Laurie Anderson, Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Paul Simon. riot girl....gotta stop sobbing
Ray was supposed to come to our area in Pa. but cancelled due to low ticket sales....our area is 50 years behind the times. Love the Kinks!! Esp. Ray! Did you read his book entitled "X-Ray"?
我第一次听到这首歌是在亚当·桑德勒的影片《从心开始》中,当时就觉得这首歌挺好听的,很轻松的感觉
@firestartertwistedfi oh yeah, Im feeing you on this.
agreed!!!
Chrissy Hyned was way to cool to appear on Letterman. She didn't need it. Very sanitized version. Not her fault. She is Awesome!
Too cute.
They sounded like this at URI, without a lie, she sounds the same now!
She's singing "Gotta stop sobbin' now oh"
OMG....great performance of this song....Robbie M is great but I'd have preferred all the original guys
the woman is uber fucking cool!!
the sexiest woman alive
Ray had NOTHING on his own song when Chrissie got a hold of it
you got that right, except for the last kanji.
You can rave all you want about the original lineup. I saw them live and they were sloppy as hell. I wish they'd sounded like this back in '82!
Things change.
She's not the most attractive woman you'll ever see but she sure can sing nice.
She's so hot!
Chrissie Hyde is hot
ummm, yes, I'm very aware of that. I was just saying it would have been great to have them instead.
I thought she wrote this about Ray Davies
after they split...
It's just me or we are here because we have watched 'Reign over me'?
Blair Cunningham is a great drummer.
wow, is an american ERICA GARCIA
She is a muse.
Isn't that black guy the British member of of the early eighties British group. Hair cut 100
yep
Sexty and something ( else )
Sorry she and the writer of this song didn’t work out in the end.
german i think
Yes, she should have his baby, oh wait she did as well
@Strumrr original guitarist and bass player are dead.
Prefer the original version by the Kinks
Go ahead and hate me, I like The Pretender's version of this better than The Kinks. I love The Kinks though....
MAN IS THAT PAUL SCHAEFER & ANNOYING TOOL OR WHAT ?
Charles Velten LOL
Their version whupps the Kinks original. Sorry Ray, it's the truth your ex one-upped you.
Roland Jazz Choruses are bad, mmmkay?
