    Wasent there a master system version of this as well? And what about pc? I was shocked how poor the mega drive version held up vs the Amiga!

    Got to agree with you on this. Much as I love the Spectrum - and I think they did as well as they could - it just didn't quite work. Loved it on the Amiga - it's just the way it's supposed to be played. Shame you missed the PC version as that was pretty decent too.

      Hi matey yes a few have good memories of the PC version 😀 It’s a case of too many systems and not enough time 😉 Lots of talk about the Master System version too 😎

    We had this on the ST, a bit clunky after seeing it on Amiga but still a fun time. Really good game design how the first couple of levels kind of teach you the mechanics of the game and how to solve the puzzles and then it gets all kind of crazy from there. Great video as always OGDuffy! Thanks for for sharing mate!!!

      Hi Rob thanks for the comment ☺️ To be fair matey the ST version still played well but was missing little bits that the Amiga had, sounds etc that just gave the Amiga version the edge😎 Have a great weekend matey… anything decent planned ?

    The reason for the narrow screen on the c64 version was because the graphics were kind of backwards from how things are normally done. The background was made up of multiplexed sprites, and the lemmings were character graphics. This meant that 100 reasonably paced lemmings was possible, but since you can only have 8 sprites horizontally on any scan line, the screen width was restricted. Good compromise though.

    I first played lemmings on the acorn Archimedes in comprehensive school in 93. year 7 I was in. I also remember a polygon 3d game lander I think it was called and the educational game. The Crystal rain forest. I loved that computer.

    I played it on ST and Gameboy tho I got stuck on the GB version there was a level I knew how to beat on ST but on the GB version some of the lemmings I needed were not given so that level was unsolvable lol. Apparently the Speccy version runs well on a Speccy Next type thing where you can speed up the processor but I have not tried it.

    Even though the SNES version was limited to digital controls, I think it had the best, smoothest cursor controls of any version that controlled with a d-pad or the keyboard or the like, even the PSP remake! Especially since one of the buttons would accelerate the cursor significantly faster if you needed quick snappy movement. Certainly much better than the Speccy and CPC controls.
    Also, the C64 version has mouse support, and along with it being substantially faster than the Speccy and CPC versions, I'd argue it's the definitive 8-bit computer version. ;)

    I have played three versions of Lemmings. On the Super Nintendo, Amstrad CPC and PC DOS. My first version and the one I have played the most is on the PC. Better than the Super Nintendo and Amstrad. A mouse makes the game so much better. I wonder if there is mouse support for the Amstrad game...

    Played it a lot on the Mac in the old days. IMHO the best version. MegaDrive is nice as well but beside missing mouse control the game area is limited to a max width significantly smaller than on the Mac and most other versions as well. Especially noticeable on "A Beast of a Level II" which on the MegaDriva is far easier than on the Mac. As for sound I'll probably give the edge to the MegaDrive and Mac as a very close 2nd place. The C64 is really great in its own respect with limited hardware in mente and an impressive feat and makes good use of the SID chip too. Despite the C64 only had a limited amount of sprites they "hacked" it and made the lemmings out of characters and so could have many more moveable objects on the screen than anyone though possible - would have been jaw dropping if made just after the C64 was introduced in '82.
    The Spectrum... Nice try but really don't.

    • @OGDuffy
      @OGDuffy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As you say the C64 was really good and the SID chip comes into its own as it does in so many of these VS videos 😉
      I was interested to see how the Speccy version turned out and to be fair it looked better than i expected it to be 😄. Never played the Mac version but sounds decent 😉 Did you play it on the Amiga ?

    • @renaudg
      @renaudg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Considering the Amstrad had no hardware sprites, it really smoked the C64 here.

  • @timoheinonen9570
    @timoheinonen9570 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should have played the more recent 128k version of lemmings on the ZX Spectrum. It runs much faster and also has support for Kempston mouse.
    It may not have much colour but at least it does not have blocky low res graphics or too small playing area like on the CPC and C64. Because of that, it plays much better and is much better as a game.

    • @OGDuffy
      @OGDuffy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Timo, fair enough matey…. Your a Spectrum fan then 😎 Grew up with the 48k rubber keyboard myself.

  • @Edgel-in6bs
    @Edgel-in6bs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    C64 definitely better than amstrad mate. Know it's more colorful and has a bigger play area but play is slower/chunkier, graphics too blocky to see what's going, and sound vastly inferior.
    Still, Joyce has to win some

    • @OGDuffy
      @OGDuffy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be honest it was a close call as you say the C64 was awesome but that screen size !?! Made later levels really hard an added an extra difficulty.
      Shame really as it would have been a mega game if they sorted the screen issue 😀

    • @trocoloco
      @trocoloco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      how is blockier if both are using 160 x 200 resolution? CPC uses full amstrad and more detailed graphics on this one

    • @renaudg
      @renaudg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What are you talking about ? The graphics are the same 160x200 on CPC/C64 here, just as fast but with a vastly better palette on the CPC, the closest to the Amiga original in fact. Not only that but the tiny play area makes the C64 version unplayable.

    • @Edgel-in6bs

    • @OGDuffy
      @OGDuffy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ST version on the face of it looks very similiar but it’s the small touches that make the Amiga version superior for me. What other games do you fondly remember on your ST ?

    • @bats4bats
      @bats4bats 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OGDuffy Most early Amiga games were sloppy ST ports (controversial I know) with little ot no difference in my option. I came from a zx spectrum so knew a true underdog . The Amiga came alive with lemmings, the more colourful graphics and the music were iconic. Psygnosis made the Amiga truly live. Though the one game i loved to show off was Dungeon Master, 512k on the ST ran flawlessly but to use it on the Amiga you needed the full 1meg. Another was Bards Tale had the spectrum version but the ST was my skara brae home :) The real shinning light though was the PD software games most never got a port to another machine and were brilliant.
