Thank you for the stroll down memory lane for me. Though I’ve never been in that part of the country, my grandfather was the preacher at that Old Regular Baptist Church. His name was Arlie Lee Brown Sr. He was also the school teacher. 1920’s to 1930’s. They lived in Letcher and then in Whitesburg.
Wooden spoons like that used to come with those little cardboard tubs of ice cream... My grandparents lived sort of near a store in Clay county that sliced baloney off that big red " log"....you could have it sliced up as thick or thin as you wanted. Thick sliced is better for fried baloney sandwiches....
I enjoyed today's adventure. When I saw those wooden ice cream spoons I remembered vividly barely being able to taste the ice cream but getting a good strong taste of wood instead....but still fond memories. Your sandwiches looked real good there at the end.
Awesome place Coyote's, I've been through there several times but it was back in 1985-86, hard to believe its been 37 years since I've been to Whitesburg! I'm due a trip through there again and I'll have to stop there! Great video! Thanks for sharing!

I am in shock that you guys are born and raised in Appalachia and have never had potato candy 😮😮 That stuff is the bomb! There is a secondary version you can make with corn syrup and confectioners sugar that’s even better.
That candy is called potato candy. . Some people know it as peanut butter logs. Its delicious. Peanut buttee, vanilla, confectionery sugar, and yes 1 potato to bring it all together. Yum!
Potato Candy 1/3 c. mashed russet potatoes (about 1 med potato, cold) 1/3 c. creamy peanut butter 1 t. vanilla extract 6-7 c. powered sugar Melt sugar and vanilla in saucepan on low, add potato. Remove from heat, roll out on sugar lined parchment paper, spread PB over it and roll up. Using parchment paper as a guide. Enjoy Happy Holidays 🎄 ✝️
@IgnitedCoyote Please tell her just don't add anything to the potatoes. Just water, and potatoes boil til tender drain water then mash don't add butter or milk. Let the potato, sugar, and vanilla set up after she spreads it out. It will set up fast a few minutes then spread pb on it and roll It's a Depression Era candy.
We live in 2 houses growing up had no bathrooms in them 😮 had go to the outside toilet Our little Church had no bathrooms either. Had to go to the little buildings outside it had his an hers.
