nope, for older mk fans its unusual that Lao didnt have this inferiority complex in the early mk games. its only after mk shoalin monks that this 'i m his equal(although i m not)' personality was added to his character it was pretty shocking for us cuz since then we knew Lao to be a silent, mystically hatted, peace loving shaolin warrior who was to chosen to be their representative and not Liu(which was reversed in d mk9 reboot) but Lao refused knowing the consequences of becoming the champion. after Liu's death in the old timeline, he became even more powerful but eventually fell to the deadly alliance after which BOON STARTED ALL THIS BULLSHIT
Mike Trough It's Boon, if anyone knows the MK characters, it's the guy who's been with the series since MK1. Your first description doesn't tell us much about Lao, outside of him having shared Shaolin origin with Lui Kang and a mystical hat. Outside that, we only knew that he wanted to avenge his ancestor's death, and that he considered Lui Kang a friend. We don't really have much on how closely the two are as friends, but it's not impossible the rivalry and friendship to simultaneously exist. With Raiden having messed with time to create the reboot by altering events from after the start of MK1, he could have erased the moment that lead to the two lowering the tensions of the rivalry and becoming closer friends, which would have happened in-between MK1 and MK2. If at some point, the Rivalry was supposed to turn into just a friendly competition between the two, Raiden's timeline change is likely responsible for preventing it from happening in the MK9-X timeline because both of them died instead of surviving to the point in time where we first meet Kung Lao.

Liu Kang and Kung Lao actually has the same amount of strength. But if Liu Kang beats someone everyone has always watched him win like his battle against Shang Tsung in MK9. But when Kung Lao defeats a strong person, everyone didn't watch him doing that like his battles in the courtyard in MK9 (Sonya and Jax returned to Earthrealm, Johnny and Smoke's asses are kicked, Sub Zero is kidnapped). So people don't acknowledge Kung Lao's strength despite it's actually the same as Liu Kang
