thanks Dr Bauckham for making Revelations more enticing to dig into. Your insight into matyrdom I believe is key to breaking the total surrender that will be demanded from decent living persons in these coming days.

On our level it is quite daunting to comprehend because it was not written on a human level; we need to seek divine understanding for decent living persons to be freed from our ineptness.

This is an AMAZING commentary on the Book of Revelation, and I will echo what was already said--thank you to Richard Bauckham for an accurate and HONEST explanation that many "saints" (children of God) will be martyred, but return with others to the New Earth. I believe that Rapture theory is a false doctrine, taught be false teachers who themselves do not understand what it means to truly following Christ.

There is a lot of doctrine which may be in error. His may be in error. Just remember, there is only one unforgivable sin, not choosing to follow the King.

Thankfully Richard does not believe in the erroneous secret rapture theory.

JOHN actually had a series of visions..he didnt just write a message using symbols borrowed from the old testament etc. The symbols line up with symbols in OT because its inspiration from the same Holy Spirit.

But a 1st century Jew would've already studied the old testament and know those sources

The book of Revelation is a prophecy that outlines the future works of God from the time of the apostles up to the new heavens and new earth. It says, blessed are those who read, hear and keep the things written therein. Reading is not the problem. The problem is hearing and keeping. Therefore blessed are those who will recognize these prophecies when they come to pass in their respective generations. Then only can you keep them.

Can You Bear What Is New?
‘The Revelation’ that John received took place after Jesus was glorified together with His Father with the glory which He had with the Father before the world was. < John 17:5. Also ‘The Revelation’ reveals things that was not revealed when Jesus said to His disciple, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” < John 16:12. Can you bear the new things that are written in Rev.21:5-7, He who sat on the throne said to John, > ‘Behold, I make all things new’ --- ‘Write, for these words are true and faithful.’ --- ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. --- He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.” What is new in ‘The Revelation’ is that Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega who sits on the throne, and His son is another Lamb who was found worthy to take book from Him who sat on the throne. > Rev. 5:1-7
John writes in Rev. 1:10, “I was in the spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, saying, ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last.” This voice that spoke to John in Rev. 1:10-13 is the One like the Son of Man. The One like the Son of Man said to John in Rev. 1:17-18 > “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, and am alive forevermore.” --- “These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: ---.” < Rev. 2:8. And written in Rev. 1:8 it says, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
After Jesus who sits on the throne introduced Himself to John, a strong angel as written in Rev. 5:2 proclaimed with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?” John wept so much because he found no one worthy to take the scroll that is in right hand of Him who sits on the throne. But one of the elders said to John, “Do not weep”. In the midst of the throne --- stood a lamb as though it had been slain. This Lamb (Rev. 5:7) came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on throne who is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. Who is this Lamb that was worthy to take the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sits the throne > Rev. 5:7?
This Lamb is another Comforter/Helper who is the Son of the Alpha and the Omega who sit on the throne; and is He who overcomes as Jesus also overcame as written in Rev. 3:21; and is He that will be given power over the nations as written in Rev. 2:26-28, in Rev. 12:5, and in Rev. 19:15.
Jesus the Comforter spoke about another Comforter to come. John 16:7-10 > “I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin,” --- “because they do not believe in Me;” --- “I go to My Father; and you see Me no more.” --- Written in Luke 13:35 + Matt. 23:39 Jesus said, “I say to you, you shall not see Me until the time comes when you say”, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” When He has comes; > John 16:14-15 “He will glorify Me, all things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.”
It is written in Rev. 6:12-17 that they will say, “--- Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able the to stand?” --- Rev. 5:13 > “Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever.” --- Rev. 7:10 > “Salvation belongs to our God (Jesus) who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” --- Rev. 19:12-13 > This Lamb had a written that no one knew except Himself, because He is the Son of Him who sits on the throne, and His name is called The Word of God.” - Amen

There is an alternative view today, instead of the usual dispensationalist point of view that dominates American Evangelicalism, sometimes referred to as partial preterism. We believe that the Revelation was written to seven churches in Asia, in signs or symbols of events that would begin to take place in the first century. This message of Christ to John, to deliver to these seven churches, is a message of hope, in that it demonstrates the defeat of all enemies of Christ and His church. These enemies were empowered by Satan.
The first enemy, the harlot, or Old Jerusalem was defeated in 70 AD as retribution for spiritual adultery of the Jews, "We have no king but Caesar, crucify Him, let this man's blood be on us and on our children." The harlot was destroyed by the beast whose back she rode, but who hated her.
The beast, which was the Roman Empire with its forced worship of its Caesar as God, was the next enemy to be destroyed. The rider of the white horse, Christ eventually defeated Rome with the gospel message, the sword of the Spirit coming from His mouth, and then against all odds and after much persecution, by the 4th century Christianity had become the national religion of the Roman Empire.
The next enemy which is yet to be destroyed, is Satan himself, who had empowered the previous enemies of Christ. The Holy Spirit in His revelation of truth separates the defeat of the first two enemies (harlot, Old Jerusalem/beast, Roman Empire) from the defeat of Satan by a minimum of 1,000 years. The millennium itself is symbolic, representing a greater period of time than 1,000 years, and thus, it is still happening, and has been happening since the collapse of the Roman system of forced Emperor worship and triumph of the church over the Roman Empire.
Satan then rallies his allies once again at the very end of all things, and attempts to turns the world against Christianity, in order to finally wipe it out, but just before he is successful, Christ intervenes and ends all things. Satan is destroyed, all humanity is resurrected for the final judgment, the final enemy, death is destroyed, and after this, eternity begins for all.
