Indeed...pumping rounds out 20 at a time with my Tapco mags always gets other shooters around me at the gun range looking and pointing at me. They look awestruck as I'm putting lead on target at 100 yards consistently, and even more awestruck when I tell them I bought it 1992 for 89 bucks.
I bought a brand new yugo model sks years ago for $89. It came packed in cosmoline. Not having the eye for detail and wisdom years of playing with rifles brings you, I failed to get all the cold war goop out of the firing pin. Loaded the mag closed the bolt aimed the rifle downrange and squeezed the trigger and nothing happened thinking I failed to rack one in the chamber I pulled the bolt back and saw a bullet was in fact racked and ready, as I shut the bolt the round unexpectedly went off and hit the ground about 20 ft in front of my target. I'm very grateful I was practicing good muzzle safety, but should have paid better attention to making sure my weapon was completely clean before taking it to the range. Let that be a lesson just like Jerry said make sure you clean the cosmoline out of the firing pin before firing those sks's. Be safe out there folks. Thanks Jerry, you are a Legend.
Not fast is pulling the trigger and sear falling at the same time. When he goes fast, trigger hits the frontstrap before the sear registers that its time to trip hammer.
The sks is probably one of my most favorite gun. I got an sks from my father in law 16 yrs ago and I still have it and it is still one of my favorite guns. I used it for hunting and still do. Ive put so much ammo through mine since the ammunition was so cheap. But it's had many different transformations it had a scope then red dot three different stocks but the one thing is its still a heavy gun. That's my go to gun when shit hits the even over my AR-15 or my M1 carbine and some of my others just cause it's never let me down.
That's silly. The sks is a good gun but if you were fighting against someone with an AR15 you'd lose every time, if for no other reason that capacity and speed of reloads. You have 3 reloads for every 1 AR mag, and can reload much quicker with AR. Transportation of reloads is harder on stripper clips too. The T top sks mags are even worse to carry. The sks serves much better as a patrol rifle where few rounds will be fired. It's not something you want to fight with, which is why it saw very limited use in combat.
@@realtyrocks1969 you don't need a stripper clip to load an sks I have 30rnd 20rnd plastic mags just like an ar15 and I got a speed loader it's not harder to load an sks than an ar15 I don't know where you got your information maybe do some research on an sks I have and ar15 style stock for mine and I have red dot and it's semi automatic like an ar15 and the ammo is abundant like ar15 so look at how much different accessories there are for an ar15. Maybe in the 50s I would of had a wood stock and 5rnd 10 red mags that took stripper clips but sks accessories evolved you can make your sks look any way you want. So before you blurt out a paragraph know your weapon I have and ar15 to so I understand what accessories and both are capable of.
@Marz8999 1st off dude I've had an SKS since I was 13 years (more than 30 yrs) old. I currently own 3 of them so you're not going to tell me anything about the SKS I don't already know. And I know you don't need stripper clips to load the sks. You can load them one at a time from the top or you can load them by dropping them in the bottom of the mag. (Either way is slower than AR15) You can convert your sks to run on mags but they have that stupid T at the top of the mag, they are a curved mag and are much harder to run in a chest rig, especially when compared to a nearly straight magazine of an AR15 with no T top. You're a dishit kid and you have no idea what you're talking about. The AR15 has a nearly straight magazine that inserts directly into the magwell and drops fast. The sks has a T shaped magazine (because it was not designed to use a removable mag) and its required rocking in to hold the magazine much more like an AK. The design of the AR15 is far superior in every aspect to the SKS and is why almost nobody has used the sks in combat and nearly everybody used the AR platform. Ps. Your mom is calling you to dinner.
@@TellenJones more rounds are always better! I just wonder if it would function as reliably. People modify SKS’s to take AK mags and they almost never work as intended
@Milhaus don’t be overdramatic, obviously communism and the Soviet Union was a horrible thing but the guns are great weapons and pieces of history in some cases, are you not gonna own an h&k g36c because... Fascist? Or a German kar because... fascist? If you don’t like the weapons then fine, but don’t be so dramatic because a rifle had history you don’t like
@Milhaus So the soldiers who fought in Vietnam weren't coerced with a draft, and punished if they attempted to evade it? The communists are no friends of mine, but in the respect of forcing men to become soldiers, no government is innocent.
You just can't win on TH-cam. They complain if you're not safe. They complain if you're safe. How about you just watch a master of the craft do his thing?
You sir, never cease to impress. And I'm not talking about your shooting skills as they speak for themselves. I'm referring to your neverending stress on safety, first and foremost. Even with your vast experience and familiarity with firearms, you gear your videos to new shooters, and emphasize safe handling as job one, with chamber flags and not having ammo on the table while handling weapons. You motivated me a couple years back to store my ammunition in a different room from my gun safe. While I do have loaded weapons in the house, are limited to my wife and I's carry guns, and they are safely stored if not on our person. Well done, sir, well done.

Thanks for the video Jerry. I got by SKS 35+ years ago for $125.00 at a gun show near Fort Benning, GA. I lived on base and the range was 1/4 mile away. 😁 Bought 2 steel boxes of ammo and still have 1/2 a box left now. I have fired over 600 rounds at targets 100 yards at that range. I fired it better than my issue M16, but I never was allowed to practice with the M16 like I could with my own weapon. Now the Army will not allow private weapons on base. How can anyone get better if they are not allowed to train? Even with their own time and money. Now my S&W 44 Magnum I bought the same day and still have has been fired 7000+ times. Thank god for reloading equipment and lead casting dies.
I really appreciate you always showing how it really is. You don’t edit your videos to show you hitting something perfect every time ! You miss - you own it ! Something I wish kids these days could own up to :). You’re a great shooter and an even better icon of firearms use and safety ! God bless you and your family!
Great video. Took Mine out of the box and broke it down completely and cleaned it. This video and other of his videos are very informative and helpful.
Love this guy. Always treats the weapons with utmost respect. Knows the ins and outs. And on the breakdown portion of this video has shelf upon shelf filled to capacity with cartridge boxes. Everything about this is good for the shooting sport.
A buddy bought an actual self loading AK-47 and I could not comfortably shoulder it to careful use stock steel sights. I had to crick my head way down low and crooked. Is the SKS better? Sort of confirms what I see on news films. The bad guys seem to use full automatic much of the time. I have heard that's what the gun was designed for. Specifically, dig it out of the rice paddy fire three seconds of full auto and reload. Those magazine pouches on the chest hold what? Six 30 round magazines? It was all I could mange to find room for ten twenty round magazines of 7.62 NATO up into the guard tower East of Pleiku. I have no actual idea what I am talking about. But I have seen and done the things described.
Same. One of the most satisfying guns I own. I have bought more guns since, but that simple cheap SKS was a perfect first gun. It is still a go-to-gun in my collection.
Great video and detail, I also own a Nornco SKS, mine went through a house fire and all that survived was the metal parts, I massively got the gun cheap and went through and cleaned each part by hand got new wood and got it all together and works excellent I would share a pic but don'tknow how but in all cases iI enjoyed this video and look forward to seeing a part 2 if you have the time maybe address a few modern conversions like bullpup and tapco stocks as well as magazine options optic options ect. Thank you sir.
I have two SKSs myself but the one I like is the Paratrooper model that accepts any AK-47 magazine. It is by far much more accurate than the AK. I would believe that his SKS that he was shooting at 400 meters was probably a little bit off on his front sight. They are set at the factory but are not tweaked to be exactly in the middle. Most of the time if you bore sight your SKS you will not miss after it is centered. It is my go to rifle, especially with the 30 round magazine.
...bought mine for $85 back in '93 {Bill Clinton made me buy it...he was a very persuasive gun salesman back then)...I wish I had bought two or three...and crates and crates of that cheap ammo...live and learn...
Brother you ain't lyin'! I wish I would have stocked up back when they were 99 bucks unfired and packed in cosmoline. Ammo and strip clips were cheap. I miss the good days after the wall fell.
+Paradise Road I remember seeing garbage bins stuffed full of them for sale at the hardware store when I was a kid for about $50 and stacks of crates of ammo next to it. Good old days.
+Ammobucket Not calling you old, but man, those most of been the days. Rifles in garbage cans being sold at hardware stores? People freak out if you pull out a folder with a 4" blade in a hardware store.
I can remember going to gun shows in the late 80's and early 90's and seeing SKS and Mosin rifles by the crate for 75 dollars each. If you bought multiple rifles they would make better deals. We'd buy 4-5 every time and a case of ammo. Man I miss the old days...
Jordan GrizzChair actually its the stupidest idea from this fucking idiot guy who cant even speak correctly. U play as u train. And u dont need flags in all u need to do is keep bolt locked open
He does this because all weapons must be flagged at events, which is where he shoots at. It's not really practical when shooting on your own range by yourself. It's a good idea for safe storage though.
I like the idea of loading the SKS from the bottom. Never thought of that. 5-6 cents a round for center-fire rifle ammunition? You're lucky to get .22 LR for that cheap.
It's from a time before the rampant socialism of current US politics. And before the jackasses at Oly Arms built a 7.62x39 AR-15 Platform Pistol. I recall my last order made from an ad in the Shotgun News for three 1200rd Cases of Chinese 7.62x39 in 1997. $240, delivered. 3600 rounds. 18 months later, the ATF banned it as AP since it was steel cored.
+Lion Celica You're right! Clinton banned the importation of Chinese "guns" and ammunition into the United States on May 26, 1994. I do know that's the last great deal I ever got on MilSurp.....
Paddy O'Fernature I can imagine. It's a shame russian surplus was cut off this year as well. :/ I have family up in Canada that can buy Norinco brass cased 308 for something like 25 cents. I'm jealous.
I have several sks's and absolutely love them! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your skills with us. The sks is without doubt one of the very best firearms that I have ever owned or shot! Thank you again for sharing!!!
I love my AR-15’s but there is nothing like a good ole SKS especially if you have it all decked out. It simply works every time and unbelievably accurate.
Years ago my SKS would double eject rounds and stovepipe constantly. My Grandfather told me that I shouldn't load it from the bottom of the mag due to that part being designed for unloading only. I haven't had a single feed issue from my SKS after loading single rounds or stripper clips from the top of the mag.
A chamber flag in the weapon before walking down range is not only good range etiquette but it's also a good ND preventer. Safety first guys. You can "cool guy" your own videos, the pro's have the serious videos...
I didnt know checking and making sure the gun is unloaded was a "cool guy" thing. That is one of the first things you learn is making sure you are loaded/unloaded. It does only take one time but if you follow the right steps you dont have to worry about anything. I'm sure a man like jerry is capable of something to obvious
Mr Miculek, I believe your gun's failure at the beginning was a result of a mis-loaded round. The SKS is meant to be fed from the top. You will notice that the magazine's follower is stepped, and if the last cartridge is on the wrong side of the magazine, it is possible that without sideways pressure the round can be ejected straight out of the top of the magazine without stopping at the feedlips. Loading from stripper clips, or even single cartridges from the top of the magazine should prevent this issue from happening in the future.
The communist adjustable sights aren't for accuracy like the western ones are. With communist war doctrine, theyre used more as a rough estimate to be used in a squad volley. you don't have to be as accurate when you have 20 chinamen using their SKS's as artillery pieces.

I have a couple nice ARs, my sons thought I was crazy when I started looking for an SKS. They are tough little guns that work well. I remember buying them for about $40 in Shotgun News in the mid to late 80s. I finally found one that wasn't too ridiculously priced. I take it out and play once in a while. The gun is underrated by most people.
Thank you for this video. It is extremely informative, and you are clearly an incredibly knowledgeable person in regards to military small arms. I have not even finished this video but have already subscribed to your channel. I am planning on purchasing my first rifle this week, an SKS. (Been rigorously scouring gunbroker, classic firearms, and Atlantic firearms) and this video shows all! History, instructions for disassembly, etc. great! You rock.
The SKS is still one of my favorite weapon platforms. So fun to shoot. I've owned dozens of them and all were great. I bought mine in the early 90s too and the most I ever spent was $95 for the Russians. Too bad they aren't that inexpensive anymore
Jerry awesome video, the sks has some real potential, we Canadians love our sks and the prices of the gun and ammo are really affordable here, a lot of enjoyment for the backyard shootist, pure fun all the best
Hi Jerry, I too bought a nice numbers-matching SKS a while back from an acquaintance here in the area (running it through FFL). It was an early Russian version made by "Tula Arms." After learning of the "bump-fire" problem, I also learned that some firing pins do have the return spring, but not all. I immediately disassembled mine for a look-see and found that it *did* have a firing pin return spring. It was around the business end of the pin, much like a return string on a ballpoint pen. I understand that one *might* be able to add the missing spring to those that don't come with one, but I'm not entirely sure, since it might depend on whether there was enough extra room machined into the bolt on non-sprung versions. RM
sydneycbr let me load my sks like that and you run out 200 yds in front of me and tell me I’m stupid, you say it’s wrong but I bet you’re too bitch to back it up

Damn... that's some mighty fine shooting. 200 meters was nice, but 400 meters, standing, unassisted (seems the cameraman was having a hard time hold a CAMERA), and guessing holdover is f n OUTSTANDING. My compliments Sir. Thanks for the quick review. I absolutely love my 1950 Tula.
As always, great narrative! I would only mention that 1) the AK receiver was originally milled and 2) I think you should have showed the complete disassembly of the piston system, meaning also showing the second part of the piston system immediately under the rear sight.
I couldn't agree with you more. It is by far the best all around weapon ever made. It has every advantage that all other major combat rifles have and none of the flaws. This is Gods rifle.
never thought of loading from the bottom, it could be a interesting test, of which way is the fastest reload the rifle! should be of known of the price changes and stock up on guns and ammo. i got two sks rifles, one has a night vision scope on it!
Anonymous Anonymous sorry! i forgot I have three the one with the night sight is an sks commando rifle, it is the same as a regular sks, except it is with a shorter barrel. The other two are older like Vietnam ara, one with a worn wooden stock and the other has the red plastic stock. But I am planning to hold onto them!
RiotTor got one of those scope mount replacement covers, not really on the dot. But with a first gen night scope of shoting less then a hundred yards, like maybe 80 yards max, I will be hitting the four or two legged critter. One day I will try to get a gen 3 scope or by luck a thermal, then I will be trying other mounts for better longer range hits.
One of the most knowledgeable SKS gunsmiths I've met is the owner of Murray Gunsmithing in Bowie, Texas. He specializes in reworking the bolts to return them to the original spring loaded firing pin design that eliminates the problems caused by stuck firing pins like slam firing and pierced primers.
Love em. Great piece of history and firearm. Russian: 1950. Refurb 1953 - Tula Arsenal.... w/ some interesting "barracks marks". Its sucks that since the US ban on Russian ammo, Barnaul 7.62x39 has gone up 25%-35% in price. Crazy that the rifle is now $500.00 in "Canuckistan".
Just bought one myself today and you could imagine the look on my face when I saw the review videos and people praising the gun from less than a decade ago saying how they got it for about $100-300. Excited to take it out to the range and see how she fires.
LOVE my SKS, so I jumped all over this video when I saw it pop up. Thanks for another awesome vid Jerry! Curious what the hub-bub is about regarding having ammo on the same table as a weapon? Are we seriously concerned that a stray round could somehow find its way into a weapons breach correctly, then have the breach closed correctly, then have the trigger pulled, all by accident?
Just a simple safety measure. Of course, it doesn't mean at the range, where you are shooting. It is easy, once a person becomes very relaxed around weapons, to have a negligent discharge in the reloading room, garage, etc. No ammo around, no ND.
Seems like an OK idea in theory, it just seems so overkill to me. Check the breach and using barrel flags seems more than enough to me. I could see an anti gunner seeing this and using it as justification for their beliefs. 'See!! This guy is a trained professional and he's soo scared of the gun he won't even have ammo NEAR it!'
Tommy Rad - We're not talking about matches. Talking about when you're at home and you're working on your guns. Not seeing the need to be so cautious about having ammo near a weapon is all.
TinPinFTW I know but... matches, 1000s of them, is where Jerry M. trained himself to flag all barrels, ALWAYS. So, that safety act of flaggin, takes ZERO time and instantly tells you AND OTHERS the firearm is unloaded. No one said you or anyone else has to be as safe.
Excellent video! He made some very helpful and important points. He also speaks in a way that know he is sure about what he is saying, backed by experience, and that he would be honest if he was unsure. Anyway, thank you for sharing your experience, I hope you are well!

What gets me. Is Jerry says in the beginning, "I've honestly never shot it fast". But my question is. What qualifies as "not fast" to a man like this?
Not fast is around 750 rounds per minute probably
Not fast is pulling the trigger and sear falling at the same time. When he goes fast, trigger hits the frontstrap before the sear registers that its time to trip hammer.

Ps. Your mom is calling you to dinner.

...late 90s you could buy a 10 rifle crate of them in the Shotgun News and they were 99 or 95 bucks a piece per rifle....

Thanks for the video Jerry. I got by SKS 35+ years ago for $125.00 at a gun show near Fort Benning, GA. I lived on base and the range was 1/4 mile away. 😁
Bought 2 steel boxes of ammo and still have 1/2 a box left now.

Really good how much respect he has for all his firearms. Along with his obvious talent. Keep it up!

I think your chamber flag idea is outstanding. Thanks for the tips and tricks.

I picked a beautiful specimen Norinco SKS up today, and I absolutely love it. Can't wait to take it to the range this weekend and give her a workout.

It would be safer with a cable lock through the action.

Happy to hear/see so much firearms safety promoted. You're the greatest...
BTW, you can test this hypothesis quite easily by intentionally loading a single round on the incorrect side of the magazine.
I think he’s got it buddy. I’m going to go out on a limb and say he knows the chances and don’t care.

I kind of wonder why you didn't use the adjustments on the rear sight for long distance?... They work pretty well... :-)
The communist adjustable sights aren't for accuracy like the western ones are. With communist war doctrine, theyre used more as a rough estimate to be used in a squad volley. you don't have to be as accurate when you have 20 chinamen using their SKS's as artillery pieces.

Hi Jerry,
I too bought a nice numbers-matching SKS a while back from an acquaintance here in the area (running it through FFL).

TinPinFTW Certainly not 'overkill' at matches.
