Great video. I have a question. If I have a Amex credit card that's issued from a credit union and I apply for a Amex charge card directly from Amex. Will I still receive a Hard Pull on my credit regardless, although I already have existing history with Amex?
I’m Canada it’s the other way around; Mastercard only at Costco. It used to be American Express only at Canadian Costco’s and that certainly helped Amex get more Canadian customers.
Well, there are two differences. MasterCard cards tend to get processed faster than Visa, but Visa, from what I've heard, is marginally more accepted than MasterCard in countries, which use USD as their currency. I run our family finances. most of my cards are MasterCard, partially, because those were the cards my banks (yes plural) offered, but, when given choice, and since my home currency is CZK, but mostly, because I preffer to have information faster. My dad has a Visa, because his bank doesn't carry MasterCard anymore and he has to wait sometimes, to get all of his transactions done... due to which, he calls me, to check on his account all the time, because he's not sure, when and where he paid, therefore, he's never sure of his final balance. Not to mention, that Visa, at the time of his MC being replaced with the Visa, was not so widely accepted in Germany. The country, he spends the most time in! (he's a truck driver). Meawhile, I get transactions from basically all over Europe within minutes of making a purchase. Meaning, if your bank gives you the choice between Visa and MC and other perks and services with these cards are equal, you may have to weigh, what's more important to you and what will the use for that card be. Edit: That Costco case reminded me of one more thing, though that shoehorns in American Express. Hungarian highway authority as well as a lot of businesses don't accept AmEx. I've heard, that in the Netherlands (will confirm this year) basically the only card accepted in some types of shops (I believe basic grocery stores) is Maestro. So, if the card is meant for travel to certain destination, researching that particular market might be a factor as well.
I just realized that I don’t have a single MasterCard. I have five Visa cards and one Discover card. It was not an intentional decision. I just took the ones that gave me the best offers and the best deals.
@@tonycalderamx I have an Apple now and I haven't been able to get it to work. They told me that it only works if you use a pin number on the transaction.
@@tonycalderamx I dunno if it works tbh. I live in Germany and most cards are some sort of local debit card here and if I link them to my phone I can either read MasterCard or Visa on the bill. I believe that Google Pay uses Visa but I’m not sure about Apple Pay. If u wanna check it which one it is, just link your card to Apple Pay, do a small purchase (like $5) and have a look on the bill. Usually you can see what you’ve used to do the purchase. If it says Visa you’re good to go then. It can be different for every store whether they show what you’ve used to pay for your items or not. Make sure to go to a store where u know they show that on their bills

Visa is typically more used world wise and first excepted but at the same time Mastercard is a close behind. So maybe there is no clear competition.🤷♂️
I personally like Visa better only because it is easier to pronounce in other languages. However, I'd like both equally if MasterCard shortened their name to just the first two lettters in "master" and "card," which is Maca.
The only one that’s “hard” to get is the Visa Infinite because it requires you be approved for a $10,000+ credit limit. The Visa Signature only requires a $5,000 limit. I have one of each but I also want the Chase IHG One Rewards Premier world elite Mastercard, too. However, I don’t think it’s on the same level as Visa Infinite. I think it’s more like a Visa Signature, and the World Mastercard is the same as a standard Visa. But correct me if I’m wrong….regardless, it would be wise for Mastercard to come out with their own version of the Infinite from Visa, if they want to remain competitive enough to gain market share. Right now Mastercard only has about 135 transactions for every 250 transactions Visa has.
A big difference is that MC can be used on purchases outside of the US. Many merchants outside of the US, because VISA has more regulations, don't take VISA.
In Asia VISA are accepted everywhere and it's common card , debit and credit, I used to have MC and Amex that I have cal as not many merchants accept it especially Amex
That's typically not how it works. The credit card compares what amounts to a check sum. The first digit is the network code. 3 Amex 4 visa 5 mastercard disco uses another network which starts with 6. Mastercard uses the first 6 digits to determine the class of the card. Visa handed that directly so you can keep the same number. BUT as far as checking the card they will do 1 of 2 things. Do a 1 dollar check to see if the card is active or 2 run it versus a seed from whence hackers extrapolate credit cards that they can print and run at the businesses that only check to see if the number is valid. The actual settlement doesn't occur till the end of the night when it's sent as a single batch and THATS when the credit card is actually processed. You can rip off some business this way. Please don't. Or at least if you do only target big box stores.
I feel like MasterCard has gained market share at the cost of Visa in Europe. But I hear Visa is used more in places like Latin America. Personally I somehow prefer Visa, not really sure why.
Conversely, Discover and Amex are their own financial institutions, as well as operating merchant processing networks. Amex also processes payments for select other lenders, such as Wells Fargo, US Bank, USAA. I don't believe Discover processes for anyone else.
more than 10 years ago Walmart had the discover logo but they changed it to visa when they were with synchrony bank but now they are with capital one they have they mastercard also macy's is partnered with American express
Imagine visa or Mastercard said forget offering anyone are infrastructure let's make our own card. Wouldn't people be force to use there credit card? I don't think banks are set up to process that many cards.
I have cards with three other networks with up to to an $8000 limit, Yeah I have tried to apply for a visa in a number of different networks and have been unable to obtain even a beginning limit credit approval
I have a Visa Signature, Mastercard World Elite, 2 AMEX, and a Discover. Who is better you ask? The one that is giving me the best options for rewards. They both do the same thing. Process payments so you can spend the banks money so they can make money. Some Visa cards are absolute trash. While some Mastercards are pretty awesome. Ironically I got my Mastercard through Chase who is a predominantly Visa. They all do the same thing research and pick the one that will work for you.
I prefer MasterCard as it seems to be more secure, and has better key benefits. The two different cards that I've had breached were both Visas. I'm sure its a coincidence, but still is something to note. One of them was a Chase Card and the other was bank's debit card. As a side note, Cap One just upgraded my Venture One to Visa Signature from a Platinum, which will give me access to additional benefits using that product at least.
credit bureaus are tied to the credit card lenders not the networks... visa/MasterCard/etc just handle the backend transaction that's it to verify that card is indeed one of theirs.
I am really interested in getting the Cap1 Savor One card. I want the signup bonus, the 3% on dining, and I specifically want a MasterCard World Elite card for the cell phone insurance that MasterCard added this year. I’ll take earning less rewards in my cell phone bill for that insurance because I do not pay to insure my phone.
This is true because MC gives them a better deal. A lot of credit unions use MC too. Even for the high end World Elite cards the fees are cheaper than the high end Visa Infinite. They all do the same thing in the end.
So I noticed my quicksilver for Capital One is a Visa card. I know you said Capital One uses mostly MasterCard for most of their processing. What made them use visa for that card instead?
Hard to say, likely they have different internal teams working on individual cards and they decide on a per-card basis. Most issuers do have a mix of Visa and Mastercard, sometimes they even offer Visa or Mastercard as a choice to new applicants, though i do not see that much anymore.
they have two different cards the quicksilver that has an annual fee is for ppl rebuilding credit or no credit at all that has the mastercard logo, the quicksilver with the visa logo is offered to cardholders with better credit
Jorge Padilla The Quicksilver One card is a mastercard. It has much lower requirements. The fee for that card is $39. The Quicksilver card is a visa card. It has no fee. The underwriting for that card is much higher.
