Why Mariah Carey & Brenda Lee Compete For No.1 During Christmas | Billboard Explains

If I don't hear Mariah's "All I Want For Christmas" during the holidays, it just doesn't feel like Christmas. I am in my 40s, and that song came out when I was in high school, so it really is a part of my youth. Every year, I play the album from Thanksgiving to Christmas. It is a classic that will go on forever. The jingle and the chords are perfection.
Cannot compare both of them. Different styles. Brenda Lee - less is more, Mariah Carey - more is more. But both are the best !
I prefer Mariah. But I❤❤❤ Both of them. Mariah and Brenda are Legends.
I like all christmas songs. "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is my youth. At that time I was a total addict for Mariah. The song gives me chills everytime. It's full of christmas feelings.
MARIAH 🦋🎶 greatest voice ever 🎶 genius songwriter 🦋 game changer 💪🏻 Global icon 🌍✨ still breaking records ⏺️
I like both. And both exchanging places at the top during the season is something of a fun novelty.
"It's not about who did it first, It's about who did it better". "All I Want For Christmas" is worth listening even the small piece in the track is uncomparable. Maybe if I was in the 50's I would get to appreciate more Brenda's holiday classic. But for me I think "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree" is still a bop tho. It gives me a jazz calming music that I would play in my turntable. 🎄
Mariah ❤❤❤
Go Mariah!! ❤
No comparison Mariahs is a dream
There is no battle....one song vs a collection of Xmas music. PUh-leaseeeeeeee. Mariah is the songbird supreme!
I’m very shocked that Last Christmas by Wham! doesn’t ever reach the #2 spot. I know that it wouldn’t surpass Mariah and take the #1 throne, but I feel it definitely deserves a #2 position at least once!
Brenda didn't write and didn't produce that song. She just showed up and sang whatever they gave her.
BOTH ARE RESPECTED AND LEGENDARY. BUT MARIAHS XMAS SONGS ARE RELEVANT AND MOST PLAYED
MARIAH ❤❤❤
Mariah has done a lot of music and other stuff for Christmas. It's not just one song!
Mariah ❤
Miss Mimi wins hands down. I hate Christmas songs - except for hers (written by the ICONIC songstress herself). I also resembled her, so of course I'm going to vote for her!!
There is no battle ! We love both songs !
Last year, Brenda was pushed by Spotify. That is why she went to #1 in the first place.
This season (2024) Wham is massively pushed which is why Mariah stands no chance in Scandinavia and the British Isles.
Normally, AIW would go to #1 in 20 countries all around the world. This year so far, the song only reached #1 in USA, Canada, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Iceland.
Anyway, Mariah's Christmas tour grossed $40 million in North America and her Xmas album already sold 400k in equivalent units worldwide - making it the 2nd best selling holiday album of the season (like every year) after Bublé's album.
Carey probably made $50 million from her Xmas Empire this season.
Exactly. But read my comment above about what they would have had to deploy with the help of Sketchify (& Payo...err...😈...Pandora where she was "miraculously" doing much better than explicable vs MC in general "suddenly") in order for what happened last year to actually happen, because her label did way more than just "push" Brenda's song, which sounds like a kindergarten teacher just giving some friendly encouragement of "GO BEAT (T.S. OUT OF) HER!" nudge to her kid students. 😂 When it was more like a couple of suits negotiating quietly in some dark, dingy bar about what & how much it would take exactly to accomplish their goal to win without it looking too conspicuous to the outside. What, you think it wouldn't COST anything for Spotdora to play a record practically on loop without needing the financial nudge (i.e. the only kind that actually works in business) from their subscribers? It would have been between them & the record label, but in any case, no one's gonna do charity for THIS cause of corrupt greed, not need & poverty. Hey, even JLow's love cost more than a thing to Ben lol.
However, they were actually so careful that I think MC was "only" able to get to #1 last year --- which sounds so absurd given its data's trajectory for the past 3 decades, let alone the past 8 years or so of lightning acceleration pushed by SPONTANEOUS outburst in the public's demand for it --- BECAUSE they "allowed" her to pass Brenda just for a token couple weeks in order to make their whole shenanigan appear more natural/believable. But to a long-time music chart aficionado like me....hmmm. If their song had genuine "momentum" no matter where it suddenly came from without any apparent reason, why would it weaken mid-flight also for no apparent reason?
The other thing, though, is that Sony may also be doing the same tactic with "Last Christmas" this year, but the MC record is theirs as well so they don't want to "push" it that far 🤪. Plus, that GM song has been genuinely popular in Europe all this time anyways so there hasn't really been too much of the expensive pushing needed for it, I don't believe. But it's all part of this old game and ultimately why Sony, Billboard & the whole industry, I suspect, didn't make any fuss or even attempt to tamp out* the campaign of tricks that their internal data should have made obvious to them about the dirty, old practice that they've all taken part in for as long as recorded music & its broadcasting to the public has been a big business that keeps on giving like Santa on Christmas midnight.
*But, also, just the thought that the biggest song in world history still "needed" some PAYOLA to help to keep it going at this point is well beyond waaay beyond hilarious lmao!!!
@@Dr__Feelgood Yass! Preach the truth. The same people who yelled "Mariah is over" last year, should do the same this season to Brendine. Brenda was EONS ahead of Mariah in the US last season and when we pointed out the fraud, they were laughing at us. But msyteriously, Brenda is WAY down this season while AIW remained just as stable and on demand as always. The math ain't mathing.
The crude thing is that they are doing the same with WHAM this season. Wham used to be EONS below AIW globally, and not has become tied with AIW this season - and ahead in Europe. People claim that they are pushed this season bc of their anniversary. But Mariah is also celebrating 30 years of her Xmas ALBUM / song. SONY just randomly decided to make less money this season by pushing Wham instead of Mariah. Unlike Wham, Mariah does have an entire catalogue of Xmas music. Mariah's Xmas album is one of the biggest ever. A push for Mariah would therefore generate way more money for Sony than a push for just 1 track by a group that no longer exists.
So, 2 Xmas seasons Mariah has been sabotaged. I hope Karma comes for all of them. The funny thing is, that Mariah would certainly benefit if the same tricks would be used to push her... but in the end she doesn't even need it that much, since AIW is still the biggest Xmas song in the world right now. (And she did it while being demoted on all Xmas playlists while Brendine and Wham are all pushed up high on these playlists).
Thence, AIW is the most organic and generally sought out Christmas song by the listeners on any streaming platform. (And has been since streaming began).
@@stevyyjay85 Yep, but the only thing I would disagree with you on is that they're "pushing" songs that need the extra help, which the MC song clearly does not need. It's been making (unexpected) load$ already, to state the obvious. So the INVESTMENTS, which the payolas really are at the end of the day, would really only make sense business-wise on those records that have the potential to become bigger, but those expenditures are not sustainable forever, which is why it seems to have decreased markedly for Brenda, if they haven't actually halted it entirely. So they act like "cranes" that would lift the songs up to a level where they'd hopefully hover around or stay for as long as possible.
"All I Want" is already at THE pinnacle of success & popularity and so I don't think there's anything that can be really done to take it even higher anymore. So it would only be burning money to spend more even to just promote it and not necessarily to force more radio airplay & playlisting geared towards free/ad-supported streaming subscribers who aren't allowed to choose or play songs on-demand. So I do understand from the business standpoint the rationale behind why payola goes on & could never be killed even after the switch to paid steaming, which I previously thought would finally unalive the old deed 🤪, but might have become even worse in this era ironically, according to one article I read recently.
It's just bizarre & hilarious when industry people (like Billboard!) who do KNOW everything about the practice pretend like on here that it's all "Aaw shucks...what a cute little battle of songs...ladida-dida..." when not all of us are the naive idiots who have absolutely no clue about what's going on inside their sausage factory lol, especially nowadays when so much of the raw data that they use for their charts are accessible to anyone interested.
@@Dr__Feelgood They should promote Mariah's other Christmas songs. There is so much to be made, especially from the album.
Mariah all day 💯
It's simple Mariah's Christmas album is Sony and Brenda's is universal straight to the point. Also this narrators voice is annoying
Al I want for Christmas is incomparable🙌🏻🙌🏻
I didn't know Brenda. Always for Mariah ❤
Sorry I do not subscribe to the "let Brenda have her turn", it doesn't work that way. MC's song is far superior 🎄
Brenda didn't write or produce "her" song
Mariah is way past the finish in line in a category all of her own and she doth not compete.
I love both Mariah Carey and Brenda Lee. I love both songs. I grew up listening to both. They're both Music Queens 👑👑.
"every holiday season, they battle it out for the top spot" -- it happened only once...last year LOL
brenda who? be serious.
Darlene Loves Baby Please Come Home is my #1
They should do a christmas song together
DOES IT MATTER😊
I have grown weary of the original version of All I Want For Christmas Is You and I actively avoid it whenever I can. I still love the song, but specifically its sexier, slinkier, more R&B So So Def Remix. I hope that version gets more exposure.
Who the hell is Brenda?
Se estuda vai saber 😂
go ask you great grandmother, oh too bad she’s dead while Brenda is still alive
I hope ur joking

@balladofahomeschooledboy0514 Besides probably being an intended SHADE 😈, did you know that not everyone on TH-cam is American or is familiar with country music? Nor has everyone who has seen Home Alone or has heard the song even heard of her name? I myself only knew the song from seeing the movie & had never known who sang it until the past few years.
@@Dr__Feelgood Did you know that not everyone takes comments too seriously unlike you? Because like, chill
Ummmmm it’s really no competition chile 🤭 🐑 👑
Brenda's will be the one...
"All I want for Christmas" is super annoying...
i don't like either of their songs its so many Christmas songs far better than both of theirs. johnny Mathis we need a little Christmas or the temptations silent night or Eartha Kitts Santa baby far better
Finally another Christmas song in the top place. I can't stand AIWFCIY anymore.....
Comprehension is not your strong suit, is it? Brenda only got the top spot last year for a week after being aided by a few country singers in making a music video for her. Mariah quickly grabbed the top spot back the week after. Mariah, so far has a 20+ point lead over Brenda, and unless Brenda and her team pull off another promo stunt like last year, she really doesn't have a chance. Globally, only the combined effort of Bruno Mars, Rosé, and Lady Gaga are giving Mariah a challenge for the top Spot on the Global 200.
@MariahFan1992 Are you talking about yourself? Or maybe a mirror? Do I care about her song performance? Nope!!
No one cares about you
AIWFCIY is the worldwide christmas anthem
@@adrianrojas4071 You're wrong young boy. My family care about me, my friends care about me, my colleagues care about me. AIWFCIY is a worldwide Christmas anthem? Nice joke.....
