    OHHHH, I'm so happy I found this guy! He's one of the real deals!! So many out there tryin' to make a name for themselves. However Mr. Dior is one to pay attention to.
    I HAD to "like" the first 10 seconds in..👍🏻👍🏻😁😁

    What a wonderful presentation! At 9:12 Rick sounded exactly like Buddy Rich performing the beginning of "that rotten kid" I saw in an late 60s live show. This has to be one of the best presentations for old As I have ever seen! Each cymbal is unique and Rick's artistry brings out the best in each of them. Thanks for furthering my education with these wonderful vintage cymbals. I definitely like the old As more than the Ks, and I'm glad because the Ks are prohibitively expensive lol.

    LOL! I remember those fiber trap cases! My brother's drummer( and my teacher)used to put his 22" ride on the reso side of the bass drum and turn afew tension rods to hold it in place and then the 18" crashes on the floor tom and hi hats on the snare and they all went into naughahyde cases with broken zippers! Great set of old A's Its what i grew up on and still use my 70's ride and hi hats.

    Love those old A's! Thanks for breaking them out. I've been down the road with a number of different cymbal lines and brands, but I always come back to my vintage A's. They're really versatile and work in so many situations.

    • @boomerguy9935
      @boomerguy9935 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Back then, the Avedis line weren't even called "A" except when comparing them to the "K" models which Gretsch company imported from Turkey, and they didn't have painted logos or even the current laser stamped serial numbers. I know this because I still have mine that I bought in 1965. My Avedis hi hats came in a matched pair but it was before Louis Bellson started the trend of having the bottom cymbal heavier than the top by asking Zildjian company to do this for him. My bottom hi hat is lighter in weight than the top but has a deeper sound because of the lower profile and different lathing. The !op is 710 grams and the bottom is 685 grams. They still sound amazing in small venues with acoustic instruments and work wonderfully with brushes! The patina is amazing and they are still going strong!

    Your videos are so very informative and inspiring! Unfortunately I’m now 38 and just started drumming two years ago - I wished I could have learned it since I was a child. You offer so much material, I would probably need a lifespan of 300 years to cover it all…
    One thing I can’t figure out is what makes a great cymbal? Of course there are those that I personally like and don’t like. But obviously there have to be some objective criteria that discern a good one from a bad one (like the mentioned hum-to-noise-ratio). I guess you don’t own bad cymbals, so some kind of a comparison video regarding this topic is probably not possible? Anyway, keep up your fantastic work, I really appreciate your efforts!

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi
      I don't really have any bad cymbals but there are plenty of them out there.
      It really depends on the type of music you are playing. A thick heavy ride cymbal might be good for rock music but would not sound so good for playing jazz and vice versa.
      That being said you want an instrument with a nice even decay and no harsh overtones. I am partial to thinner darker cymbals but that's a personal preference.

      Hi
      I have heard some that sound great, but they do not sound like the old ones to me. Probably because of the dirt and age. The formula and metal quality could have changed as well (more pure, less pure etc.).

    I had several old Avedis, I've sold most of them, I still keep only two Block Stamp from about 1955. an 18" and a 22". Those are untouchable, the 18" is my primary crash. Ah, yes, and a 10" splash from the 60s. The rest is EAK collected over the years with some luck. I only regret selling a 22" Deep Ride, a Hollow Logo from the 70's, that was really good.

    • @roadrocket7
      @roadrocket7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I too, had a lovely 22" Deep Ride that I bought new in 1980. I think Zildjian had just introduced them. Like a dummy, I traded it off for a new Paiste 2002 22" Ride. Two entirely different pies, but I wish I had the Deep Ride back. It was so nice and versatile and the best Ride I ever owned or played.

    What kind of hearing protection do you use there, mr. Dior? It looks like just one of those bog standard foam plugs and I'm wondering how you can make those work?
    For me they change the sound so much, I feel they also change the sound of my touch, like the "inner mixing board" so to say.
    Is it just the many many years of playing that ingrained the right touch for the right sound for you, that allows you to play with such a great balance?

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi
      I use all sorts of ear plugs from the custom molded type to these foam plugs. I like the foam plugs for drumset since most of the custom molded plugs only reduce the sound 25 dbs or so, while the foam ones reduce over 30 dbs. If you look at my health and wellness playlist, I have a video on earplugs and hearing protection.
      Thanks

    I saw a great deal online for an old A 50s small stamp 22 ride but was wondering if 2771 is too heavy for a jazz ride.

      @rickdior  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi
      That sounds like it is about 200 grams too heavy.
      The old As sound much better when they are thinner. 2500 grams and under.

    Hello! Im a big fan of the 50s a, I've managed to get my hands a set. An 18 thin crash, a medium thin 20 ride and thin 14 inch hats. I was just wondering on how you deal with nicks on the edge. My hats are fine but my 18 and 20 have some minor nicks all around, how do you deal with that? Do you just sand the edges or leave em be? I really love my cymbals and I'm really determine to make em last. I'd really appreciate your input.

    Hi Rick - quick question...
    Could a 20" Zildjian A Ride from the 1960s be as light as 1700g? Or would that more likely make it a crash/ride or maybe just a 20" crash?
    Enjoy your videos!

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi
      That's very light for a 20. That's a crash cymbal. You could ride on it, but it will be washy.
      It might make a great sizzle cymbal if you pop some rivets in it.

    Have you had a chance to play on or develop an opinion on the modern “Avedis” vintage style cymbals designed to sound the “old” A’s? I think Zildjian released them a few years ago.
    I love the sound of A style cymbals from all the brands, especially Sabian AA’s. I feel like it’s such a ubiquitous sound for all styles. But I’m also a sucker for the darker side too, especially my Sabian HH’s. My cymbal setup always include both types of cymbals. I feel it provides a wider palette of tonal colors than having all cymbals from one series.
    Off the top of my head I know Peter Erskine usually plays New Beats with K and K Con rides. I saw Keith Carlock in December 2021 playing 2 big K Cons on the right (as both crashes and rides), and an A Custom crash on the left. It was a fantastic contrast in both color and pitch. I couldn’t tell what hats he was playing, but I think he usually plays modern K’s.

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andy
      I have tried them, and they are really nice, but they are nothing like the older cymbals I have here in my opinion. They are brighter which probably has a lot to do with the dirt and age of these cymbals. The ones I tried were also heavier than these.
