I don’t know how the algorithm brought this channel to me but it’s great to see what you’re up to. I was in class 278 with you and life choices led me to leave at week 7 of phase 1 and that one choice turned my life for worse one mistake after another and it’s never been the same. It feels like a life time ago but it’s funny what an impression you made and I remember how funny you were and keeping the mood light

As a US MARINE,I went to Coronado Amphib school in 1987. I had the privilege of watching a BUD/S class start hell week. We would finish our training, and we go up on the berm and watch the buds carry the logs to the surf zone. We'd constantly be hearing bells going off, and we knew what that meant. By the middle of the week, the platoon was about half. We're going to the chow hall about the same time the buds and we would watch them eat their Chow super fast and then take a 5 minute nap. Then they go out and relieve the guy guarding the IBS. Me and a friend pretended to talk to each other, but instead we were talking to one of the boat guards, standing parade rest with an oar and his Mae West vest. He told us they were doing night navigation on the boats, and they got lost and the instructors left them stay out there allnight. He was shivering like mad. We told him he was almost there, and to stay motivated. And that we were going to be looking for him specifically to finishing the training.
The day before the end of hell week, we saw instructors leading a few buds to the chow hall. They were hurting bad. And there's only like 10 of them, and there were five instructors. Definitely hardcore. Definitely glad they're on our side. Definitely glad they're part of the department of Navy along with US Marines.

Dude. Thanks for the videos. My best friend is on blue squadron. The picture he sent me after securing 1st phase was hilarious to me. Swollen hands, brown T-shirt looking like a dress, and his big ol bald spot on the top of his head. I met tons of seals during his wedding. You dudes are the salt of the earth. Im appreciative of every one of you that endure this. God bless the white side and black side. Real men.

Great channel. I graduated 125 Nov 83. Its so funny to hear your recollections of Hell Week and 1st phase. I remember the timed runs started in soft sand, but everyone went down by the water where the sand was compacted. Log PT was a ball buster. IBS on our heads for most of 1st phase, that was rough. How about the hours long paddles to Mexico, and around the world the last night of Hell Week. Running up and over the f berms with the IBS sucked. And everything(!!) during 1st phase was a race. It pays to be a winner. BUD/S is the only training, I think, that Zero's and enlisted train together. I just found your channel and find it very informative. Thanks!

I always said a little prayer for the guys out there trying to become something more than themselves. Just like he said, everywhere they were going, they were running. I went through AF basic in ‘78. 12 pushups, 12 jumping jacks, 12 of everything and a quarter to mile and a half run. 20 rounds through an M16 (original M16) that jammed every 4-5 rounds. And it rained the day before the obstacle course and filled it with water and mud so they cancelled it. It was a breeze. Turns out you don’t need to be a medieval warrior to work on missiles. 😎

First day in indoc, jogged up to my class in a fresh clean pickle suit with extra starch on my cap, on the beach as they were just wrapping up abs. Formed up for a run down to the fence and back past the cays and to the Hotel Del. About half way back, being ill-prepared for boots in soft sand, nerves of being so new and a big lunch, I fell back, went to my knees and lost that lunch. An instructor kicked me in the butt and told me to get my @$$ moving. Throwing up is not a good enough reason to stop running. I remember this so vividly 30 years later because it was the first moment I started the process of realizing what I had gotten myself into.... Thanks for the walk down memory lane...

I was stationed at NAS Coronado and honestly loved the beach there. You could walk down past the hotel south and at chain link fence barely make out BUDs on the beach training. Every now and then their swim exercises would bring them closer up and was cool to see them getting ripped out of the water by zodiac craft.

There’s a part of this training that needs to be discussed. You can have an iron will and never want to quit, but you also need the genetics. You have to have the physical and psychological make-up to withstand being pushed to those limits. This is where many fall short. They’re not “losers” or “quitters” per say and shouldn’t carry that stigma through the rest of their life. There’s a difference between wanting and being…living wisely means knowing what path to choose based on the “equipment” you’ve been issued.

You couldn't be more wrong. Even instructors can't predict who will graduate when looking at their initial behavior and physical type.

      The key word is "selection."

    • @scottboy
      @scottboy ปีที่แล้ว +1

Every guy there is genetically capable, it's a matter of who has the willpower to suffer and not quit, that's not genetic. The difference between a guy who wants to quit badly and continues to put one foot in front of the other, vs a guy who wants to quit badly and quits, is mindset. Every seal who talks about who makes it and who doesn't says the same thing, it's about willpower, those in selection don't need to have the best this or the best that. As long as one has the mindset and are willing to suffer, one can make it. Aside from being kicked after repeated severe injuries.
Never once has a navy seal said it's a matter of genetics, they have the complete opposite takes.

I think an important part that you're leaving out is the condition you were in prior to starting buds.
I understand mind over matter but you can't get a overweight out of shape dude to run a marathon strictly by will power. There are limits to everyone's capabilities.
You make it sound like mental toughness is the key when I think a more accurate assessment is that the SF teams are highly unique both physically and mentally.
That's the part that's so impressive to me. You're all Basically Olympic caliber guys with incredible fortitude.

Good point. The screen process is not easy at all. Swim, Run, etc. If you can meet the minimums, you have the ability to make it. BUD/S starts off slowly, during pre-training. By the end of 1st phase, you are doing hundreds a push ups a day. And hundreds of flutter kicks. The one thing they cannot gauge on an applicant, is determination. To not quit when you are really cold and wet, tired and exhausted.

My wife didn't sleep for 5 days one time and she started hallucinating this girl was making whole meals for people that wasn't there it scared the crap out of me and my young son he was about seven at the time I literally had to take her to the hospital and they finally gave her medicine and they said this is what happens when people don't sleep they hallucinate but this is just because my wife was sick mentally she has passed on now she was 42 when I woke up found her deceased but just a simple fact that you made it through the Seal team says something about you not a lot of people can say they are a seal so you always have my respect and thank you for your service

Good morning Chadd, Michael Brearley here , let me tell a tale , back when I was a United States Naval Sea Cadet Corpse, I got my Two week duty order for united States Naval Underwater Special warfare Group 2 training at U.S. Naval Amphibious Base ,Coronado, California. My Naval Sea Cadet Contingency completed all the course evolution,s that was talked about , ibs coastal reconnaissance,(patrol,) and beach landing I I am just about able too hear ya on the weight of the ibs, especially when I am 168 lbs surf wet and 5"10 and 16yo. It was a rush , a total team rush , what a day and ibs crew insertion and water pick up with the rubber band looped around the shepherd,s crook of the arm sure made anchors aweigh sound with all crew recovered , that is a able seaman memory that guides me through my life , makin sure all creen are safe and ashore, the 21 course obstacle course was a hoot , me and my teammate (Lawrence Baker,) made the course in 10.minutes 27 seconds for me and 10 minutes 47 seconds for Larry, Larry became a Scientist that worked Seattle Cancer Research in Seattle, hoo ra, .I can remember the buds, instructors taught us too survive for Life , God Blessed Us with those strong and Brave Men of the Sea , that is for sure ,, we trained in the war room on the shore side of the road , after we meet and greet, and give our pat on the cap ,seal/froan when we past those steel doors and into our time with the teams, remember it was just two weeks training ,so we touched on all the course training, thank you for all your time Mr. Wright, Always able

@10:30 - A nautical mile is 1.15 miles; therefore 4 nautical miles is 4.6 regular miles. If you run this in 32 minutes you are basically running a 7 minute per regular mile pace.

Anyway, I always wonder what my fathers training was to be a Green Beret with 3rd Special Forces Group in Vietnam 1968-70. He saw some nasty stuff and recieved the Bronze Star with 'V' Device, two Air Medals and two Army Commendation Medals for it. Obviously he could throw some weight because his arms were massive.
