Inside Iran’s Raging War on Drugs | The War on Drugs

  • When we think about the global heroin trade, the news is usually about Mexican cartels and North American opioid crisis. In fact, the country seizing more heroin and opium than any other is usually the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Despite being an authoritarian, religiously puritanical state that even bans alcohol, drug addiction has spread like wildfire across Iranian society.
This is how a combination of geography, geo-politics and failed War on Drugs policies in Iran have created what might be the world’s worst heroin crisis - and how corrupt elements of the Iranian state itself might be profiting from it.

Fun fact: The photo of exploding 50 Tons of illegal seized drugs on national TV is just pure comedy. What is interesting is that the EU countries, whose population is 10 times smaller than Iran's, import at least 50 tons of heroin every day. Then you can imagine the import of Iran for the entire country with 80 million people. So burning 50 tons of drugs is just small pocket change for Iran. Those are the real facts and the world needs to know this. I hope this comment stays for ppl to see.
Edit: The drugs, spec heroin and coca are illegal in our world just because you cannot earn money off of it by yourself alone unless you work for the Gov. or big pharma companies. Otherwise it wud be free and legal as its God given plant for everyone to use it as real natural medicine. The demand is high bcz they put the price on it for their own benefit and your suffering. By natural law no drug should be illegal and the Governments and Corps world wide will never allow that to happen, now you know why!

If torture and death don't work, it shows you just how powerful opioid addiction is ... I remember when I was using, I was afraid of getting arrested and going through withdrawal, so I'd keep a stash I could quickly access in case I got pulled over. I'd even lock my doors just so if a cop came up unexpectedly, I could still have time to ingest them. I don't know if I agree that it's a disease, but at the very least it's a huge problem.

You can find most kinds of narcotics, within an hour or two, if you’re familiar with the drug market of city. And also illegal alcohol 🍺 as much as you want, which is much riskier than legal alcohol, because you frankly don’t know the production process. I hope things change soon, cause I want my city back. When do we in the West start to realize a war on drugs, or a war on poverty, or a war on crime, etc doesn't work? Its not like we can win a war on crime & say 'the war is won! no crime will ever happen again!'
When I was in Amsterdam, most drugs are de-criminalized, and I didn't see a bunch of people walking around with needles in their arms.
The moment we make a tangible thing illegal, the demand for that thing skyrockets.
So I agree with you man - drugs will win. Hands down.

I’ve begun to change my tune towards the legalization of drugs. However, measures need to be taken if we take that route. A friend of mine is an EMP. He had a unique opinion: If someone OD’s, they get 4 services from an ambulance or Narcan from a responder. After that, they’re cut off. Let them die. I was surprised to hear that, but it also correlates to burnout first responders face. My thought process is this, after one OD, all future responses have a substantially higher bill. Insurance won’t be obligated to cover it either. This would prevent insurance rates from getting astronomically high for everyone, help prevent burnout from first responders, generate more revenue for the county through these calls, etc. Further, legalization also would lead to a decrease in fentanyl lacing everything…Legalization should only be permitted in homes or certain establishments though. Not on the streets or parks.

There is also the problem that the rehabilitation compulsory boot camps (many government funded) we have here are kind of unethically using the name of one certain 12 step organization, and so that causes alot of resentment in most so they steer clear of meetings. I mean when youre getting beat up or tied to a tree and hosed down with cold water, while also going through withdrawals, in the name of "Such and Such Anonymous" i think the addict mind (or any mind) would be like yeeeaaahhh if i hear that organization's name again im gonna run to the hills.

First of all kudos to the VICE team fro making such a comprehensive YT video about the subject, but as a guy who lives in Iran, I'm gonna tell you the drug trafficking operations ran by the IRGC and the goal behind it goes deeper than what you covered in the video.
First: it is a huge source of income for the IRGC wether the drugs being trafficked to the neighboring countries or sold on Iran's domestic drug markets.
Second: The Islamic regime is using the act of controlling drug trafficking as a huge leverage to put pressure on the neighboring countries and Europe, they have always threatened other countries that if the regime wants (or in case the IR regime falls) the streets of European countries will be flooded with Heroin, opium and Crack. So they are using the control of drug trafficking as mean to insure the regime's survival.
Third: The IRGC drug trafficking operations goes way beyond Europe and Asia, in many cases IRGC has provided money, fuel, chemicals, heavy weaponry and raw materials for the South American Drug Cartels and in return IRGC uses cartel sicarios to terrorize its political critics on the US soil or any other part of the world.

It’s horrible living like as if you’re being persecuted by SS. Bad enough the dependence or addiction is rough… I wouldn’t wish withdrawals on anyone but I do wish that everyone knew what it felt like so there was more empathy and understanding… war on drugs is so ignorant and there’s always a real hidden agenda… it’s not ever about the people. No one will ever stop opiates or other substances from getting around or its demand… let people be unless they hurt others then it isn’t your business. It’s not really about health or society. If that was true then the hypocrites would make other huge drugs and sugar and dangerous substances illegal too…

It has nothing to do with “social liberties”.. Iranians on average are far happier than the average westerner whether they / you want to believe it or not . The large addiction issue is simply related to the fact that 90% of the opium produced in the world comes from Afghanistan and all of the opium has to pass through iran - naturally people become addicted . By the way the west facilitates and benefits from the drug trade in Afghanistan

@@JesperWR Cannabis *doesn't* kill people! Cannabis users are not physically addicted and dependent on THC. Opioid users can't get out of bed without a fix ffs!? That's what *dope sick* truly is...suffering from Opioid withdrawal. Yeah, I heard the video and it's absolutely ridiculous no matter the amount one gets caught with. Cannabis should be *decriminalized* worldwide imo!

@@JesperWR I mean it's a naturally growing plant... A literal WEED so... Why should you be punished for carrying any amount? You don't get punished for carrying other plants that contain poison or dmt for example. I understand punishing people for fentanyl possession and other synthetic or processed drugs but cannabis is literally just a dried plant

Iran may be notorious for all the bad circumstances that the citizens themselves have to go through, however their consistent activism certainly paves the way for a more life-changing development.

I hope you're not praising that animal government, the drug war is a failure in every country and is actually a war on people, in particular poor and suffering people. Hopefully the real activism in Iran will be able to overthrow that hellish dictatorship. I for one am hoping for a Gaddafi situation.

I am an Iranian and let me tell you that opium is mainly used by older people because there is this wrong perception that opium is a cure for many ailments like blood sugar and blood fat content. This spread of addiction has been the case for a couple of centuries now since when the British colonial powers distributed opium where ever they wanted to colonize. I am sure you have heard about the Chinese opium problem created by the British. As far as the younger generations are concerned, they are much more into alcohol and there is a great fake alcohol market in Iran which is more dangerous that even drugs. This is because home grown stuff is filled into branded bottles and sold at exorbitant prices. Many people don't realize that these are mostly fake stuff and can be dangerous. Lastly, Some young people go for the modern stuff like crack and so on but they are a minority.
