Max Changmin is one of the vocal fathers of Kpop. He's actually one of the most well known idols of 2nd Gen as well and he's a seasoned artist. He debuted at the beginning of 2nd Gen in 2003 in his group TVXQ, which is actually still active even nearly 20 years later! Max is seen as one of the best vocalists in the industry and the standard for a lot of trainees (especially under SM, his company). He's looked up to for his vocals even by some other veteran idols and non-idols in Korea alike. He's acknowledged by the general public in Korea as a phenomenal vocalist and is known outside of Kpop for it. He truly is absolutely insane. I'd love it is you could check out some of his other solo stuff like Chocolate or Fever, as well as some music from TVXQ! because his other member (TVXQ is a duo) is also an amazing vocalist. Personally my favorite TVXQ Title track is Spellbound.

LOVE THIS SONG. Couldn't stop listening to it since the day it dropped. Max is part of the duo in TVXQ...along with his partner Yunho, who has a few solos of his own.
TVXQ are THEE group that brought me into Kpop 15, 16 years ago...although TVXQ are 2nd generation Kpop, they had a HUGE impact and fandom in the mid 2000's...Max and Yunho are older, early 30s, but in their prime as far as I'm concerned....they are known as vocal kings, SM royalty, mentors to Exo...but Max knows how TO BRING IT, PERIODT. He still got it for sure.

Awesome that you got to know MAX-he is simply incredible talented and such an adorable person. Best buddy with my bias Minho form SHINee. But here is some fun fact; The original of Devil is from my neighbour countryman, the Swedish singer and songwriter Alex Runo. SM got the permission to do a Korean version/remake, and Max just NAILED it -to a whole other level than the original!!! I do hope you react to more of MAX and U-Know (his fellow member of TVXQ) and even their group's other songs and choreography. Keep up the good work, stay safe and healthy! Notice how SM used "Devil" to draw Changmin/TVXQ into its SM Culture Universe with the reference to Kwanyga in the lyrics and the pink planet you see in the MV, etc. I guess as Rising Gods of the East, it makes sense that TVXQ could be otherworldly-beings just like the rest of SM's groups and artists, in order to connect their storyline to the rest of SM's Universe story.
Changmin has been nicknamed Bambi by his fans and he has taken it on as a sort of spirit animal that represents him, so I think the deer in the MV is supposed to symbolize him. If you read the lyrics, the song is about having self doubts and bad thoughts and harboring those feelings within your heart. So in the end the deer (himself) becomes like the Devil because he has now embraced those feelings.
During U-Know's and his reaction video to the MV, Changmin said the forest you see him in is a real forest and they had to take a boat to get there. They used drones with lights on them to light the area to give it that spooky effect. And although "Devil" is a remake of a song by Alex Runo, Changmin wrote his own lyrics for the song and gave it a different storyline than the original version.
"Devil" is the title track off his second solo mini album Devil. If you haven't yet, check out his pre-release "Fever" stage video that was part of SM's New Year's Eve SMTown SMCU Express concert and "Maniac" promotional video which are also songs on this album.
As you heard Changmin is known for his powerful high notes (even more powerful than Onew or Jonghyun from SHINee or Chen and Baekhyun from EXO -- all SM powerhouse vocalists), he literally has one of the widest note ranges of almost any Kpop artist. In a high note battle he always wins.
It wouldn't be a TVXQ/Changmin song if we didn't get to hear at least one unbelievable high note from him.
Here is some background to help you understand the dynamics of TVXQ better. TVXQ (English and Chinese)/DBSK (Korean)/ Tohoshinki (Japanese), which each are the abbreviations/acronyms of the words in each language that translates to mean "Rising Gods of the East," debuted in 2003 as a 5 member group. But, in 2010 three of their members left SM Entertainment and the group and formed a new group called JYJ -- the initials of the members: Junsu, Yoochun and Jaejoong. (Up until recently, JYJ was still a group and they still produced music, but because they left SM Entertainment -- one of the most powerful and influential companies in the industry -- on less than ideal terms, it has made it more difficult for them to promote themselves and their music. So the members of JYJ are more known as actors and producers than they are as singers now.)
However, Max/Changmin and U-Know/Yunho continued as TVXQ as a duo. The day after Christmas was TVXQ/DBSK/Tohoshinki's 18th anniversary, and even now as a duo they are so talented that they have the vocal range to cover all the parts of a song between the two of them, including rap.
TVXQ's fandom is Cassiopeia and their fan color is red -- which is why you see on of the primary colors in most of TVXQ's MVs is red -- and when you attend a TVXQ concert you will see an ocean of red. Welcome to the Cassiopeia fandom. If you like TVXQ then you are a Cassi.
Yes, TVXQ truly are all-time legends in the music industry. As an SM Entertainment group, it is no surprise that the members of TVXQ are outstanding vocalists. Being some of the best dancers and vocalists in the industry is what we have come to expect from all of SM's artists and groups. That's just a fact about the type of people SM selects to be a part of its company.
Changmin (the youngest member) was 15 and U-Know was 17 years old when they debuted, so even though they are one of the senior Kpop groups, Changmin is only 33 and U-know just turned 36. TVXQ is SM's most senior group, but U-Know and Changmin are still younger than, or the same age as, many of the members of the legendary groups who came after them within their generation. They are best friends with Super Junior and they pretty much all grew up together. Changmin is also best friends with Minho from SHINee. And Xiumin from EXO says Changmin was one of the reason why he auditioned for SM because he wanted to meet Changmin and become like him. (Fun fact: Changmin got married in 2020.)
Tohoshinki (TVXQ) are one of the most famous singers in Japan as well, even among Japanese artists. And like SHINee, they are so popular in Japan that they are considered part of the mainstream music scene. TVXQ has one of the biggest worldwide fan bases and they sell out some of the largest concert venues in the world. They are SM Entertainment's top selling group, easily selling out concert tours around the world.

When I tell you this song was life changing when I first heard it...I felt jolts of electricity running through my mind and body...like nothing I have ever heard in Kpop, and it was just a song for the soul. Song of the year indeed!!!! You should check out his other tracks with videos on TH-cam. Fever, which is a stage performance video, and Maniac, which is a special promotion video (Alfred Hitchcock themed). Both are insanely FLAMES with more of his amazing vocals, and just legendary charisma!!
Omg I was waiting for you to get to this. Changmin is a LEGEND. His vocals are no joke and I was so into this grown ass man making some grown ass music (I became a fan when he was the cute lil maknae of his idol group). Def recommend the performance video for Fever. You are going to flip.

This is actually a remake by the same name by a Singer named Alex Runo. Max redid it and changed the lyrics. The original is fire as well.

You should check out his band mate Yunho's single "Thank You". Although both songs are pretty much about the same thing - being forced to deal with bad situations and feeling as though you've had to turn yourself into a "bad guy" in order to do it - the videos are very very different.
