The problem with this device is it will make carjacking a simple task. They can easily approach your vehicle at a red light and disable it demanding your money or stealing your vehicle. I also imagine panhandlers will use these, easily stopping your car at a red light and you can’t leave until you pay them a toll.

FDNY was one of the first departments in the country to purchase the Emergency Plug. I first tested this plug on an episode of Munro Live. I've had many other opportunities to trial out the plug on multiple vehicles. While I do not have any solid data, this is a product I would recommend.
Not ALL vehicles go into park with these devices; a FEW go into neutral; then they can move by rolling. Its OK if the vehicle is on the flat, but NOT safe to assume all vehicles will not move once connected.

Great idea but it kinda sucks that you need the batteries to be good on your device to disable a battery device. It's a nit, I know, but that's one more thing on the truck you're going to have to PM, and even then batteries may be weak. Seems like maybe it could get power FROM the battery plug in some future iteration so it's one less thing to worry about? Just a thought.
@@StacheDTraining Perhaps some arrangement could be made for a truck mounting then? Something like the Streamlight lightbox charger that both holds and keeps it ready for instant deployment? The batteries in this version didn't appear to be rechargeable nor was there any provision to recharge them, but this being something you want to be reliable and instantly available, seems like a bit of tool evolution may be in order. I know, not everything can be plugged into the truck, but considering the urgency and increasing demand for this for the safety of both FF and victim, its only going to get more crucial as time goes by.

My time was a couple decades ago so EV rescues and fires weren't really a "thing" I had to deal with, not even hybrids existed at the time, but I did enjoy the odd top-terminal battery welded to a crumpled hood and spitting hot acid, and imagine this is 100 times worse . My heart goes out to you that DO deal with them daily, I do not envy you having these increased challenges and keep my FF/EMS brothers and sisters in my prayers every day.
A rescue response vehicle these days has numerous tools that require a charged battery to operate We have battery operated scene lighting, various battery operated power tools, battery operated rescue cutting tools. We have batteries in our defibrillators to keep up-to-date and monitor. We have batteries in our personal flashlights. It is not really any big problem to add one more battery device to this list.
Not entirely sure why people would think it's just as simple as shorting pins out. EV charging is one of those things you just don't mess around with and even the AC charge protocol is substantially more complicated than that. Still very simple compared to the DC charging protocol but way more complicated than a resistor or a short on some pins. Although ironically the vehicle does just use a resistor to indicate charge start back to an AC charger.
The usefulness of the emergency plug is, of course, dependent on the on-board electronics still functioning correctly, having not been damaged in any impact. Also means a fire fighter has to expose himself to possible explosion whilst plugging this device in. It all sounds like "on a wing and a prayer".
The delay is probably the vehicle systems trying to figure out why some idiot is trying to charge it while it's still in drive. A software update should solve the issue. Good to know for sure. Have they come up with a solution since your upload?
I was thinking the same thing, but at $1000, not many citizens are going to be buying these. And then there's the obvious potential for criminals abusing these if they did become readily accessible to the general public. These could easily be used to assist in robberies and such.

Our fire company is looking to get one of these, and I'm all for fire safety. But I have yet to find an example of any EV driving off suddenly after an accident. In fact, the video shown here was reported on and it turns out that the driver accidentally hit the accelerator which caused the vehicle to move, not the EV itself. So, this sort of accident is just as likely in a gas powered vehicle (which there are way more of). That's exactly what this plug protects against. The occupant bumping the accelerator. It's just meant to be a first step until you get the vehicle secured properly.

Hi I am not sure what happened to my message but I said we wonder if me as a home owner well my extinguisher claims it can put out a lithium ion fire but we wonder if it would seem like an alchol fire the fumes given off are very dangerous you do wonder if the smoke is corrosive and even if you did have a fire extinguisher do you think more likely if I have a fire in my lap top do you think even if the extinguisher could work do you think it's mostly likely you would probably end up with corroded lungs before the extinguisher could help you?

Unfortunately, the vehicle wouldn't be a reliable source of power. It's not like a 12v battery that always has power at the terminals.
