Root Escape Technique For Mini Bonsai Of Ficus Religiosa - Part 1

  • One easy way to grow mini bonsai in tiny containers is to allow the roots to escape from the main pot to another bigger pot or ground or water. The roots outside the main pot are sacrificial and need periodic pruning. This video shows how i developed 3 ficus specimens, pruned their roots & trunk, created a root-over-rock setup, wired the trunks and planted into a bigger container.

      Hi Iqbal, me too. It was kind of a last minute idea. It would be cool to get success at this small scale :-) Fingers crossed.

    Nice idea with "pot under pot" - I like this technique. Waiting for development - the obtained movement of the trunk is very intriguing

    Very interesting technique. I had been unknowingly using it. I used to place my bonsai pot in the lawn and the Ficus religiosa would grow roots into the lawn and grow really quickly. But it started to slow down when I moved the pot to concrete floor. I finally understand why now. Thank you. I'll use this technique again.

      Vinny, where do u get cocopeat, compost n all d stuff from?

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +girish kalaskar i got a 25kg bag of vermi-compost (rs 180) from a roadside nursery nearby, in Hyderabad. i bought cocopeat bricks from a shop in kerala about 2 years ago. its cheap there (rs 35 per brick), naturally bcos it is the land of coconuts :-)

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +girish kalaskar After seiving out the fine dust, i get only half a brick of usable stuff though. wastage is high. for bricks, i prefer weathered old bricks as i can easily crush them with a hammer on my apartment balcony without disturbing the neighbors. this is the first time i am using them as part of my substrate. lets see how the roots respond.

    how did you grow them initially?

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think they started as water rooted cuttings. more info in description. even better way is to start with air-layered cuttings. i have a playlist for it

      @@VinnyChirayil Good to know. My Balcony receives just an hour of direct sun and indirect light for the rest of the day. Lets see if I get some growth on my Ficus Benjamina plants that I purchased recently.

    Hi, What is the time period to keep wiring to set the shape of ficus branches ?

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never wired such small plants before. So, i am guessing around 6 months. After that if the wire is cutting in to the bark, i will have to remove the wire and do it again

    Can i use 50% cowdung in soil mixture ?? Will it cause better and fast growth-Dr.Hemant

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Dr. Hemant, generally, manure & compost are the minor ingredients mixed into soil. Both are used as soil conditioners or additives. I haven't tried a 50% mix, so i really cannot say but you can do a test of few plants, side by side or ask some gardening experts. I tried a 50% mix with vermicompost and i am not happy with the results.

      Hi Sebastian, i think you missed reading the description. Smaller the container, higher the care unless roots can escape into extra soil.
