As an older collector I have to agree with you on the overpriced books that you picked. However, I might have an explanation for you. The perfect storm occurred between pandemic, MCU and nostalgia collectors. The most important of which is the last one. Anything from the 70s to the early 90s are what I now lovingly call mid life crisis books. The ones we read and/or got rid of during that time period. Some of us wanted that back in a hot market. Prices suffered. There will be a correction it just may not affect each book equally.
IMHO, comic books are worth what people are willing to pay. I believe that all (yes, all) are over-priced. People with deep pockets over-bid or paid over FMV led to prices that were out of reach for the average collectors with limited disposable income. I know that you said to let the hobby fund itself, but I did try that a long time ago and it is not easy when eBay/Paypal nickel/dime the fees to death. Right now, I will just buy new release comic books that I enjoy collecting/reading and pick up some trade that looks interesting. That's what makes me fall in love with comic books again because I no longer see them as an "investment". Great video and totally agreed with you even though I'm a Spider-Man fan. Cheer!
I have a copy of ASM 299 I don’t remember Venom being presented that extensively… have to agree wholeheartedly that would definitely qualify as a first appearance. Thanks for your opinions very interesting and I have no disagreements with any of it. Also I really like how you move things along with your lists .. a lot of you tubers drone on and on with every book sales data and such.
I mostly agree with a couple of exceptions. I would also include Moonknight’s first appearance in Werewolf by night, Spider Gwen’s first appearance and Hobgoblin.
Oh god yes on the Hobgoblin- to be exceeding even Carnage prices is insane. It's that damn tattoo, Marvel just couldn't be bothered to premiere him the month before or after, could they...
It’s one of the reasons the prices have sky rocketed. Everyone is so fixated on the “value” and making a quick buck. It’s actually to the point where even “blue chip” keys are over valued by the hype.
Very true, but it also depends on what you collect to an extent. Sometimes a book may not come up as often as we’d like so buying it regardless of gpa is our only option 🤷🏻♂️ For sake or this list though, best exercise patience imo. I can see many (if not all) of these books continuing to decrease in price over the next several months as the economy attempts to rebound.
I 100 percent agree with your list. I own two ASM 361s and that was before the price jump. I paid $50 each for them. I do not own any others and won’t until they die down a little bit.
"In the price guide books and Wizard Magazine, they used to mark Amazing Spiderman 299 as his first appearance. And then, it was years later, where they actually decided to edit that and change his first appearance to 300 and they labelled 298/299 as 'cameos'. And I have told people that issue 300 isn't the first appearance of Venom to me, it is the 'how do we get that damn costume off of Spider-man' issue!" -Todd MacFarlane
I was lucky enough to get an ASM 300 in a lot of 200-250 comics I bought for $120. I was not considering buying it individually prior to that, due to the high price, but now I am happy to have it.
I have never really rushed to get ASM 361, I have had a few opportunities to obtain it, but there are just TONS of that book in the market. Great list!
James. You need to do a part 2. Great list. Agreed that ASM1 is always a premium but so few are sold which is why it hasn’t dipped as much as other keys.
Your explanations were good here. When I threw my head back, you had good reasoning to explain your why. I may not agree BUT I understand your reasoning which makes damn good sense.
Hey man I just want to say thank you for your video on the CGC Signature Process. I’ve decided to get back into collecting books because I recently got sober, and all the tips you gave were awesome and without a doubt helped me make a decision on what books I’m going to send in for an upcoming event! Thanks again
I’m newer to your channel and inexperienced in the hobby. Nonetheless, your videos are fun and interesting to watch. What resource(s) do you use to identify comic book value?
For the most part, I can agree with you on most of these books. But you try to tell me that Wolverine 1 is over priced? Do you really want to hurt me? Do you really want to make me cry? Great video, James!
I only have Marvel Spotlight 28 and ASM 1 in my collection and fortunately was able to get those at reasonable prices years ago. All the others on your list I don't have precisely because I don't want to pay the crazy prices on them. I totally agree with you on ASM 299. That book is underrated and undervalued. I do have 2 of those at a 9.6.
I love the video, so thank you for it, I dragged my feet over the ASM #1 for several years before the boom wanting to complete my spidey run of the first 100. I had planned to pick one up so many times and never thought it would now be out of my grasp.
Definitely agree with most of this list, James. Idk about the spiderman #1. But I see your point. I definitely wouldn’t pay that much for a low grade copy.
Great list! It’s really hard to get a high grade Strange Tales #169. Those “20-cent” Bronze Age keys are well worth their values. Here’s hoping this book will come off your list in a year or two lol
Not sure if this should go here or your undervalued list, but one of my local comic shops has recently sold me 2 copies of New Mutants 87 in high grade for $8 and $6. That's below the low-grade price on some of the comic value websites. The one I bought yesterday for $6 has white pages, crisp corners, zero spine ticks. It could benefit from a press to remove a couple of dents on the cover, but there's really nothing wrong with it.
I agree with your list. I love Venom and I still trying to get an “affordable” copy of ASM 300. I also love brother voodoo but his first appearance is just out of my range.
I've been trying to get a 300 as well but Idk if it's overpriced due to the popularity of the cover alone (it's been used for spawn, venom and so many variants as a homage) and venom is my favorite villain. Also love the pfp, M&T bank is the background to mine lol
Great vid. I really want the 1st App of X-23 she’s one of my favorite characters, but can’t talk myself into spending that much. I got her first Wolverine though so that’s cool for now lol
Brother Voodoo seems a valid price. It's getting to be a relativity old comic. I remember as a kid (40 years ago) finding it hard to get a copy of this comic. Those '70's supernatural-based horror superhero characters first appearances became keys quickly: Brother Voodoo, Ghost Rider, Man-Thing, Tomb of Dracula, Werewolf By Night, where all being sort after way back in the 1980s. Amazing Spiderman #1 seems valid too, since you no one can ever complete their Amazing Spiderman run without it. Terrible first issue cover for such an iconic character though.
I covered that ASM 300 back in the day ignoring 299 which I agree is the first appearance of Venom. If a character takes up a full page that is an appearance first or otherwise.
Great list! I don't like that ASM 300 is on your list since I have that but not 299. Lol. Someone needs to come up with a definition for cameo. Wolverine in Hulk 180 had 1 panel. Venom in ASM 299 has a couple phanels. Red Sonja in Conan 23 has 12 pages. And then there's Gambits first appearance. Is it continuity or publishing date? Oh well...that's what makes the hobby fun I guess. Keep making these awesome videos!
I think you're on the mark. Movies may have too much effect on prices nowadays. I remember when all the Batman back issues had an extra dollar or two added after the movie came out in '89. For that time, that was wild.
Agree with the list, but glad toxic avenger is getting it's respect (i am from NJ, so biased :-)). ASM 300 is just an iconic cover even if it is not Venom's 1st.
Great video... I agree with a lot of what you've said. If you really step back... there is a basic conceit that the majority of fans are buying into, and not questioning... That is that superhero movies will continue to be popular forever. This is highly unlikely. Look at the TV schedules from the mid 1950's to about 1967. Western-themed TV shows dominated for over 10 years... Until people finally got tired of them, and by the 70's they were extinct. Comics have huge problems right now... The lack of new young fans purchasing comics, the cost of new books (driven by a lot of things, one of which is that the artists are paid too much - these are comic books, not Broadway plays) and on over-proliferation of comic companies and titles. Other problems are the lack of editorial control - artists now do whatever they want, and they and their publishers re-boot characters, and restart issue numbering to get fanboys to buy new #1's. "Artistes" have too much free reign with characters and story lines, which destroys continuity and makes comics hard to approach, and turns off those who've latched on. Finally, a lot of people on TH-cam screaming about New Highs - who ignore the declines and the fact that actual sale transactions shrivel to zero at the inflated prices. Each of these subjects are complex... and each is related to the issues you're pointing out are over-valued.
I feel that UF4 and edge of spider-verse 2 are overpriced when comparing what Silver age keys you can get for the same price. However I can see why people spend the money they do on them with their potential in the future
I remember going on trips to the beach as a kid and my dad would buy me a stack of comics to read on the way. I remember reading the Toxic Avenger comic over and over again until the cover detached from the book. Good times.
I think another one worth mentioning is Bloodstone #1. Used to be a $5 to $10 book until the spec about the Blade movie which has still not been confirmed. Now it's a $200+ book based on an assumption of a casting call.
Interesting video and I think you spot on for the post part but for RAW books. If you can pick up a high grade graded copy of most of them for the right price, then they can still represent a good investment. I love videos like these that promote discussion and are based on educated opinion
This video wasn't about hunting and finding deals it was about the FMV and average price tag affixed to them. Anything can be a good deal if you get it cheap enough but when it comes to assessing the market and what books are overpriced in general it's a different discussion. Slabbed books and their pricing ladders are more transparent so it's easier to KNOW you are getting a better deal on exactly what you have but I think overall his entire list was spot on for the scope of the conversation (FMV).
Who would disagree? We all want them at that better price! I do think ASM 361 and Wolvie 1 were undervalued for years and years... they could not give those away at $40 up until a couple years ago, no one wanted to pay those prices so it corrected a bit. NYX 3 was always overpriced, right out of the gate in 2004. I think it's current overvalue is in line with where it is... I paid $150 for a 9.2 BEFORE they announced her for the Logan movie in 2016, so $500 for a 9.8 now is no crazier than that and even a bit low compared.
Agree with Mighty Thor in Love and Thunder. She wasn’t given much to do. I kind of wish they included Jane’s first transformation and give her more to do. But the mandate for a shorter film left much on the cutting room floor. The conclusion of her story will definitely impact the value of that Thor #1 but then again, Let There Be Carnage hasn’t really affected its value much. My opinion on the overvaluing of 300 is because it’s a nice round and even number. I’m simply satisfied with having the Marvel Must Have reprint that compiles 1-3 of NYX and the True Believers and Facsimile versions of books like ASM 300 UF4. Marvel Spotlight 28 and especially Moon Knight 1 feel akin to Thor 1 being that those aren’t first or even second appearances yet go for a premium and are overvalued.
Amazing Spider-Man #1 is deserving of its high price tag, it's an AWESOME issue storywise, loaded with raw human emotion! The very last page of that Chameleon story still gets to me! BTW It looks to me like the artist MIGHT have used pro wrestler TESSA BLANCHARD as a model for X-23............ but it might just be coincidental!
I was recently on vacation in the Atlanta area and one of the shops I stopped in had a raw copy of ASM 300 that they just got and hadn't put on the rack yet. I told them I was interested and they gave me a price of $900. It was in pretty good condition, probably a 9.0 to 9.2,but I just wasn't prepared to spend that much. Ended up getting some cheaper keys and spent way less money.
HARD Agree on ASM300. NOT the first appearance, just a notable issue #, and cool cover. #299 IS the first appearance and also a underrated cover! Disagree on Ultimate Fallout 4. Miles has MILES to go in the MCU, and in comics in general. Despite being a Spider-Man clone power wise, he's a unique personality and character. Also "Into the Spider-Verse" is the best Spider-Movie. Great List James!
I 100% agree with your mini Thor movie review. It was not good....nope. I also felt that they kind of short changed the character with that appearance. I was hoping Jane Foster as Thor would develop into more of a presence within the MCU.
The first 3 comics that I ever got from a comic shop were ASM 298, 299, and 300, which I got off the rack when I was 4 years old. Thankfully i kept them in decent condition over the years because I would never be able to even consider buying them now. They mid-to-low grade, which I like to remind myself is rarer than the high grade copies of that book.
I think you're right about all 10. One from my list would be Tomb of Dracula 1. I don't get the astronomical value of this book. It's a character that's in the public domain, and Marvel's version of Dracula in the book is as generic a Dracula as there is. There's nothing special or unique about this version of Dracula, yet a graded 9.8 will probably cost you north of $11,000.
As an older collector I have to agree with you on the overpriced books that you picked. However, I might have an explanation for you. The perfect storm occurred between pandemic, MCU and nostalgia collectors. The most important of which is the last one. Struggle with paying too much attention to FMV versus just collecting books that I enjoy. Sometimes you just get caught up in the hype
It’s one of the reasons the prices have sky rocketed. Everyone is so fixated on the “value” and making a quick buck. It’s actually to the point where even “blue chip” keys are over valued by the hype.

Good list! Watching the curves of books over the past couple years has been insane
I 100 percent agree with your list. I own two ASM 361s and that was before the price jump. I paid $50 each for them. I do not own any others and won’t until they die down a little bit.

Wow! Really on point with that list! Nice job.

ASM 299 was $20 up until as recent as 2015 or so I recall.
@@brentandrew2419 probably right. Everyone wants the classic cover.
Another great list, really enjoying your stepped up content production.
I love the video, so thank you for it, I dragged my feet over the ASM #1 for several years before the boom wanting to complete my spidey run of the first 100. I had planned to pick one up so many times and never thought it would now be out of my grasp.
That ASM 1 cover is so dope. Price (probably) never going down.
Great video! Appreciate you keeping it real! 💯
Another content filled video. Thanks dude!
Love how much u have been uploading
Always a great time when you upload. I also feel like some recent keys like Venom 3 (First Knull) and Strange Academy 1 should be in here.
Agree with you on the ASM 300. I always thought ASM 299 was the true first appearance as well!
Me too. especially when you have "first Kamala" on what is clearly a cameo now. People suck.
Such a great video I’ve been learning a lot about comics thanks to you and I can’t wait to start collecting! Keep on hunting!
Commendable review...and very good rationale for each!
Great video and I do agree with your selection keep up the great job
Definitely agree with most of this list, James. Idk about the spiderman #1. But I see your point. I definitely wouldn’t pay that much for a low grade copy.
Part of me wonders how low prices would be if just the guys who wanted the comics bought and sold, and not those looking for profit
Great vid and breakdown on these books!
so crazy how quick this channel grew from when i first found it
Great list! It’s really hard to get a high grade Strange Tales #169. Those “20-cent” Bronze Age keys are well worth their values. Here’s hoping this book will come off your list in a year or two lol
Then again, it's Brother Voodoo we're talking about; not exactly Venom.

Great video!! Thanks for the info. I feel the same way about a lot of comics out there. 😎
Pretty much spot on again James.
Great content as usual my man
I think your list was spot on! 👍👍
agreed with you , especially on the AMS 300,.I feel the same way for the Hulk 180 vs 181 as well
Thanks for all thoses videos, its nice to have this kind of content for the comic book hobby. 🔥🔥
Awww my NJ guy Toxic Avenger deserves it! Agree with you hard on Strange Tales 169 and UF4.
Brother Voodoo has been a hot book for a long time. It was coveted when I was a kid and well read copies were the norm.
I agree with your list. I love Venom and I still trying to get an “affordable” copy of ASM 300. I also love brother voodoo but his first appearance is just out of my range.
Its better and cheaper to get ASM 299.
i just got one nm for 750 cad u think thats a good deal ?
@@comicbookninja5268 you are right and I have one those. Guess I’ll focus on getting a better copy of 298.
@@richardkitaresku4517 for you maybe. I would need a payment plan to get that lol

Yeah dude, it's nice to see someone stick to their guns on opinions. Great video!
These videos are peaking my interest back into comics 🎉😅 keep the great content coming mint hunter
Got a few of those. Thankfully got them before the price bump.
Hey thanks, for your research, and reviews -much appreciated. Peace
Love your videos pal. Keep up the good work
Thanks for the perspective!
Great vid. I really want the 1st App of X-23 she’s one of my favorite characters, but can’t talk myself into spending that much. I got her first Wolverine though so that’s cool for now lol
Great video I injoy wach video. Thank you. Supply and demand you said alot in those few word.
I LOVE these videos!!! Keep it up :D
I snagged that Marvel Spotlight Moon Knight raw for $50, I'd say about a 8.0 - 9.0.
I've just begun collecting do you have any tips when it comes to storage
This vid definitely helped me out my collecting
Brother Voodoo seems a valid price. It's getting to be a relativity old comic. I remember as a kid (40 years ago) finding it hard to get a copy of this comic. I covered that ASM 300 back in the day ignoring 299 which I agree is the first appearance of Venom. If a character takes up a full page that is an appearance first or otherwise.

What was the print run?
I think you're on the mark. Movies may have too much effect on prices nowadays. I remember when all the Batman back issues had an extra dollar or two added after the movie came out in '89. For that time, that was wild.

Some good points here. Most of the values here is based on movie speculations which always hurts the values if the movies are not universally loved.
I'm so glad the theatre sound went out for 10 seconds and the manager gave us our money back for thor.

Great list I’ve only been collecting for about a year but so many of the ones I want to eventually get, have just blown up in price. Lol
361 was always my favorite bok.. hate to admit you are correct with it probably dropping more
Sadly I think so
Hell ya! Nice to have a list like this 😀 👌
Who would disagree? We all want them at that better price! I do think ASM 361 and Wolvie 1 were undervalued for years and years... they could not give those away at $40 up until a couple years ago, no one wanted to pay those prices so it corrected a bit.
NYX 3 was always overpriced, right out of the gate in 2004. I think it's current overvalue is in line with where it is... I paid $150 for a 9.2 BEFORE they announced her for the Logan movie in 2016, so $500 for a 9.8 now is no crazier than that and even a bit low compared.

Nice list! Like you said they produced so many of the ones on your list. What are the value of some of them going be in the future?
What’s your opinion on Batman 423? I recently got back into the hobby, still want to get my hands on a good first print copy. (Did that rhyme? Lol)
I love your videos sir! Any chance we get to see your Green Lantern slab collection and how you organize it...?
I was recently on vacation in the Atlanta area and one of the shops I stopped in had a raw copy of ASM 300 that they just got and hadn't put on the rack yet. I told them I was interested and they gave me a price of $900. It was in pretty good condition, probably a 9.0 to 9.2,but I just wasn't prepared to spend that much. Ended up getting some cheaper keys and spent way less money.
Totally agree on ASM 300. 299 is Venom's coming out party.
"A lot of people that saw the new Thor movie left a little unimpressed" should make your top 10 understatements video. :)
Dropping a thumbs up!
I agree. I think Wolverine 80 is undervalued along with that. Web of Spider-Man 18 is another undervalued book for Venom.
