IMO I like the subtle red lighting. I hate light bleeding anywhere and having it contained in the case for only when you're checking it out is really nice.

Just got a chance to play with one of these, mine was also going up to around 1960-1970 MHz, average was usually just below the 1900 MHz mark, depending on the game / benchmark. And yes, it's REALLY QUIET and I'm a borderline noise freak! :D
P.S. great coverage as always! :)

82c on a gaming X ? Yes thats way too high, maybe you have an airflow problem in your case ? or up the fan speed.

You're a hell of a guy, Tom. These videos are amazing and I know that I speak for the majority when I say that. I'm sorry that we're not as vocal as the more pessimistic crowd that's around, but we do appreciate what you do and the thoroughness and thoughtfulness with which you conduct every segment on your channels and your website. This is all fantastic stuff and we're sorry that you get any flack for things. I think that the amount of thumbs up that you have here is a better indicator about how most of us really feel. By all means, please cut your videos shorter, if you find yourself short on time. Everyone here can understand. On the other hand, don't cut them shorter on account of us not appreciating the content. What you've done has been extremely helpful for my recent build and for clarification on some matters as well. Thank you again, Mr. Tom Logan.

  • @PragmaticTornado

Got this card yesterday. Didn't have time to test it much, but it seems pretty good. I think the idle temps are a bit high, but this is most likely because the fans stop spinning when it's not under load. Temps and noise levels were good when I ran 3dMark though (stock clocks). I'm considering setting up a custom fan profile where the fans always spin. Those suckers last for years anyway; my previous card was an MSI Gaming 780Ti, and only had to remove the fans once to get rid of all the dust.
I don't really see the point with the RGB lighting, but since it can be disabled it doesn't matter. Hoping this card will last me at least a few years.

I would have still liked to have overclocking results, not even the benchmarks, just the clocks, I can figure out roughly where the performance falls with that info. In fact that might be a good way to review the cards, stock benchmarks (with actual boost clock info) and overclocked clocks.

Quick question - the EVGA step up program means that I can change my GTX 980 Ti SC+ GAMING ACX 2.0+ card to a EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 ACX 3.0 for the price of shipping which is only a few Euros. Tom, is it worth my while doing this as it's basically free?

    Hello Tim,
Looking at that power draw, it looks quite efficient. Would you say that with an i7 6700K @ 4.6Ghz, 16GB DDR4, MSI Z170A Gaming M5, 1x SSD, 1x HDD and that specific card above in SLI could be powered by a 750W PSU?
    Thanks for the review.

With GPU Boost 3, averages are apparently what you need to look at. I'm kinda torn about the new GPU Boost. It feels like it takes away precise overclocking in favour of "throw more shit at the wall and see what sticks" aka more juice and hope for your GPU's cooler to convice the GPU boost tech, that all is fine and dandy.

For old cards and new games, isn't it possible to do just a few representative models? Like last generation most popular and most powerfull like 970 and 980ti and then just the most popular one from the one or two generations before that. I have no idea how long it takes to benchmark one card though.

  • @xavierelvis
    @xavierelvis 8 ปีที่แล้ว

I've watched both this and Strix reviews and still have these unanswered in the comparison between them:
Strix fans start at 66 where MSI at 60?
Noise wise which is more silent than the 2 with the fans on say 70 degrees?
The whine (electric noise) u refer to was absent from the Strix or same level?
The answer to these questions will be the deciding factor for me as everything else has been well reviewed
Once again thank you for more great in depth reviews

£350 when the 970 launched? I'm sorry but the 970 has NEVER seen a price tag that high apart from the EVGA hybrid as far as I can remember. The MSI came in at £275 and then £290 and now back down. Though I do agree look at the performance and not the name. When can I expect a EVGA 1080 FTW review as I have one on the way for the 17th june :D

So I'm thinking about the rog STRIX, I like the look more than the MSI one and as I see they're performing pretty much the same, except the highest boost clock. But what do you think?
Also what card is the makes the most noice? The rog strix or the Gaming X?

Don't really see the point in this card. Sure its custom PCB with fancy cooler but they don't clock much higher, if at all, than Founders Edition despite being able to draw 120W more. Especially for the price, not sure why its £30 more than founders edition which in itself is $100 more than MSRP. There seems to a big silicon lottery with these cards.

just bought two of these for £800 each today which equals $2090 USD... i hope it was worth it! as i am running two predator 1440p 144hz monitors so i am hoping it will be enough. The UK, we have to pay extra which is so annoying as with my last cards when they came out i could have paid for a fly to America and back to buy them and still saved money... UK import charges and a pain!

No overclocking on the card? Seems like you missed one of the more important aspects of the card.
