  • At Unreal Fest in Seattle, along side the announcement of Unreal Engine 5.5 preview, they also announced Launch Everywhere With Epic. This program enables you to reduce your royalty rate for Unreal Engine from 5% to 3.5% (after the first million as normal), but there is a catch. There is always a catch...

There's no such thing as a Steam exclusive.
An exclusive is a title where the developers or publishers CANNOT by contract publish to other platforms.
If the devs/publishers just refuse to publish to other platforms, but aren't bound to do that by contract, then they're not exclusives.
The only exception to this is when the publisher and the platform are the same entity (like Sony creating playstation exclusive games), which Valve does not do (every Valve first party game is multi platform).

    • @Athasin
      @Athasin วันที่ผ่านมา +7

@@meyes1098 "An exclusive is a title where the developers or publishers CANNOT by contract"
No, having a contract is *WHY* something can be exclusive but there can be other reasons *WHY* something is exclusive. A developer/publisher CHOOSING not to put their title on any other platform except one is another reason *WHY* something is exclusive, because either way it's still *EXCLUSIVE TO* the platform (i.e. the ONLY place you can get the game).

One thing to mention, Unreal is different. Pricing and licensing is locked to versions. So if you build on 5.5, the license and pricing for 5.5 stays in effect. They did that to prevent price jumps on in-development titles.
Unity on the other hand did just increase pricing for non-games by a whopping 2.5x overnight (mandatory - and retroactive) a few years ago. Got rid of their cheap tier. And now price increased the pro tier, mandatory, regardless of the version you are on.
Definitely makes someone want to be refocusing on open source...

*14% of paid games have earned less than $1,000 in their lifetime.
*Almost half of Steam games have never made more than $5,000.
*Only 25% of the games have made more than $50,000.
*Top 10% of games or c. 3,100 games on Steam have made more than $430,000. We’re now getting into really successful indie game and AA and AAA games territory.

Go look at the bottom 15% of games on SteamDB, and tell me that most of them don't deserve to be there. The odds are better if you put any sort of effort on your games. Not saying you'll make a million but only really really bad and low effort games tend to go below $1000(or games that aren't putting in marketing effort to gain wishlists, but even those do go above $1000 if your stuff is eyecatching enough to get 10 positive reviews on its own)

Fundamentally Tim Sweeney's plan is based on the understanding that no game lasts forever and one day the Fortnite well will dry up. The only way to really sit on a forever-sustainable position is to make a store like Steam, and that is exactly what Gaben understood almost 2 decades ago, that why we never got Episode 3. Stores > games as businesses. Like I said in the previous comment, everything Tim is doing here is pretty wise, he is trying to make the Epic Store emerge as a Steam competitor.

I heard Epic changed their payouts calculation system not in favor of UEFN creators recently, and there was a lot of unhappiness about that, as the revenue dropped significantly. Also, people complain that the map discoverability is quite poor inside Fortnite, there's lots of spammy maps, and that there are even cases of maps theft. That is a best way to use their budget because this is trying to normalize the practice of releasing in all stores at the same time. HOWEVER, I predict many games still won't do it. Steam promotes your game on their recommendations and lists based on the amount of SALES your game has so, the number one way to get more attention on the Steam store is to have large sales spikes. Selling in two stores day 1 would diminish this effect, potentially affecting overall sales.

Actually, the move to Fab makes a lot of sense from Epic's point of view. First, Fab will bring in customers from different engines as well as different fields (like artists that render scenes in Blender, Maya, 3D Coat, etc.) This is because the assets on Fab won't be locked to the use of the Unreal Engine. Because of the increased traffic from this wider range of customers, this will also draw in _sellers_ from these other engines or industries. Right now the Unreal Engine Marketplace is, of course, only catering to UE developers/users and will only draw creators from this same developer pool.
Second, and more important to Epic, is that Fab will draw developers away from Unity due to the 88/12 revenue split on Fab. I believe that Unity's store still has a 70/30 split, so developing your Unity plugin or asset pack and selling it on Fab will be more financially viable. Unity really relies on the revenue from their asset store...not exclusively, but I'm sure it makes up a sizable chunk of their revenue. Epic is probably hoping that they can lure a reasonable percentage of developers away from the Unity Asset Store and rob Unity of the revenue that they would have received from those sales. To my limited understanding, Gadot doesn't have an official asset store, so maybe Epic is hoping that Fab can become the de facto Gadot asset store by virtue of having so many assets and allowing Gadot developers to monetize their work on a large platform with a lot of traffic. But mainly, I believe this move is all about sticking it to Unity.
Third, and probably the least impactful but the most touted by Epic's marketing, is that consolidating everything into one market will reduce Epic's running costs. This will be trumpeted as a way to save money and pass that savings onto the customers and developers, but I believe the second reason I gave is the true reason for this move. But, to be fair, consolidating everything into one market *_will_* save Epic money, so I don't think this is a lie.
Sorry for the long post. This is something that I've been thinking about since the announcement that Megascans will no longer be free for UE developers and would be moved to Fab. These are just my thoughts; I don't have any insider information to back this up.

They have you believing that all this or that type of people are part of their party or else they're some kind of traitors or have "internalized" something-ism, but that's not how it works. Not all gay people for example agree with that stuff. They try to make it like "all women are part of our group!" and that just very obviously is not the case, and the same goes for others. When you tie these things together, you take hits that weren't even aimed at you. They have you feeling like anyone that disagrees is a hateful enemy, all for their political gain, without care for how it affects you personally. All they care about is your vote, and they don't care if they make you live in fear or with mistrust - it only benefits them.
