I truly loved Meryl Streep in this scene, but I think we need to give some much deserved love to Martin Short here too. This is the first time we really get to see Oliver the Broadway director at work. There is no camp; there are no laughs. It's his gaze - his concentration, his discernment. I love watching his facial expressions go from intrigued to captivated to mesmerized. It's masterful and yet so subtle. "Where have you been?" feels utterly authentic. He has one line with her in that scene, and yet he makes the whole thing sing.
Wow! That was truly astonishing. Meryl Streep took me on a full emotional journey during this short scene. There she was, standing on an empty stage without gimmicks, just her and her incredible talent.
You know there is a whole production and multiple takes for a tv show right? This wasnt adlib. In my opinion Martin did as much as a good job here. Meryl is extremely overrated.
Everyone knows Meryl Streep is talented but... WOW! The way she suddenly transformed herself into the character took my breath away. I was watching the episode with a group of people and you could hear a pin drop, I don't think anyone so much as blinked... all of us were mesmerized by her.
I LOVED the way she came on the stage blithering and then dropped her lines to the floor with a noise and instantly in character, amazing. I knew she was going to be playing a character who’s going to be a dark horse and wondrous.
I am a stepmom and as I listened to this it resonated with me that this is what a stepmom is, a surrogate or substitute for when the mom isn't there. I think this is just beautiful.
For the non-Broadway geeks out there, the show she is watching as a child is 'No Strings,' Richard Rodgers' first and only solo musical after the death of Oscar Hammerstein; the song being sung is 'The Sweetest Sounds,' the big hit from that show, and the woman onstage is the great actress Diahann Carroll.
Thank you! I came to the comment section looking for the name of the show! I recognize the song from the TV production of Rodger and Hammerstein's Cinderella. I had no idea it was originally from another production.
On top of Ms. Streep’s phenomenal performance, I lit up in excitement with the performance of The Sweetest Sounds, and the actress’s interpretation of the song. It activated memories of my own excitement for theater!
Having just watched the entire season, it's brilliant how this monologue foreshadows so many of the major plot beats that come later and encapsulates the overarching themes
In the first 5 minutes, there was a callback to "Rodgers & Hamerstein's Cinderlla" and a 105 second monologue by Meryl Streep. GOD!!!! I'M SO GLAD THIS SHOW IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Actually, sweetest sounds is from another R&H musical, they added it to the Brandy/Whitney Cinderella and I'm so glad they did, it's a beautiful song and one of my favorites also!
I went into season 3 not knowing she's going to be on it or anything about the plot, and at the beginning I thought the character was going to be some character who's become bitter and jealous because after all her hard work she never gets notice. Then Meryl came on after that comment " She's capable, a little vanilla...". But I still was expecting her character to actually be mediocre talent, but it was so delightful the way that she's basically playing herself, if she hand't been discovered, and you just imagine if you watch someone as talented as her perform, and she's still a nobody, and you just wonder how has no one discovered her.
Exactly. I love how they led into it by filming the young version of the character from the back or without her face showing, with hairstyles and outfits that seem like the young Streep. I think they had "what might have been if she were never discovered" in mind, too.
Why did this make me emotional??? I had tears at the end. Seeing Meryl go from one character to the next in a second. And Marty!! Martin Short completes the scene and he is playing it straight! 😢
@@jamessirot854 It's no worry. I thought the exact same thing when I watched this scene too, because that's where I first heard the song too. It had me confused though, because the play didn't seem like it was Cinderella
This was my favorite season by far of OMITB, and it was precisely because of Meryl Streep. She is rightly a multi-award winning actress. This small scene gave me chills, and there are several other moments in this season that do the same., all because of her character acting, and singing! (I'm obsessed with "Look for the Light".)
I think this is a clue... or a full-on reveal, that she is the killer. It would be a great story to have it end like the season began, with her revealed as the killer, and that she did it to protect someone she cared about, like in the monologue.
The murderer in the building? Hmmm... Their suspects are mainly women from Season 1 and Season 2. Could it be her?... EXCITING TO SEE MORE OF MERYL STREEP! 🥳😍🥰🤩
You're a QAnon loon. Maybe when JFK Jr. didn't magically return from the grave to become the next President, that should've been a hint to change your sources of where you get your information from.

@@Pedro-tl7jg It doesn't matter how many takes there were for this scene. Meryl was fantastic! The dynamic between her and Martin was also superb.
For sure.
@@Pedro-tl7jg viola davis can have 10.000 more takes and she'll always end up crying with her running nose or screaming... VIOLA is overrated
A master at work. This blew me away and should remind us why Meryl Streep has so much recognition by the Academy.
She should have more, but don’t get me started lol
I love how happy Loretta is when Oliver sees her
Even if he doesn’t specifically say she has the part
bc she wanted someone to say exactly that phrase Where have you been
The deep gasp when she realized what he said to her and the joyful laughter following. What a moving reaction

100!

Also how her line ended with," ...so, now you have your answe" looking at Oliver, because she is the answer to who should play the role of the nanny.
I am a stepmom and as I listened to this it resonated with me that this is what a stepmom is, a surrogate or substitute for when the mom isn't there. I think this is just beautiful.
I am a nanny and it moved me so much...
Watch what this woman does in 90 seconds of screen time.
No kidding!
Seriously!!!! Meryl is SO Great with her craft! I love watching her performances! She’s iconic! ❤
I have a new appreciation of just ‘’HOW GOOD’’ Meryl Streep really is, both acting and singing !!! Just Wow !!!
😍👍🏻👍🏻🎉
I was so chuffed watching Meryl Streep, ALSO...the costume designer is doing excellent job. I especially LOVE how Mabel looks this season :D

Bravo and Brava!
Meryl Streep has proven that she will live forever as iconic
On top of Ms. Streep’s phenomenal performance, I lit up in excitement with the performance of The Sweetest Sounds, and the actress’s interpretation of the song. It activated memories of my own excitement for theater!
That was Diahann Carroll directly off the original soundtrack in the No Strings clip, not the actress.
@@joannal47 Diahann did a fantastic job!

Know nothing about this series but this scene alone made me cry
Its really really good.
this is just amazing, i must have watched this 100 times already. The way she transforms in a second.
Meryl Streep Masterclass.

En solo un par de minutos ,una clase magistral de actuación.No conozco una actriz contemporanea mejor que esta maravilla de artista!!
And we know now that her excitement is not about a career break ❤
the music in OMOTB is just Magic!
Ms Streep you are truly AMAZING and your singing is.....WOW.
Your talent is a blessing to all. 👋👩🏼🦳🙏
I sobbed, sobbed during this scene!!!
I had to watch this 6 times before I could proceed with the season.
That scene is GREAT
That song at the beginning of the clip was from Rodger and Hammerstien’s Cinderella. Great song.
No, it's from a different musical called No Strings (which Meryl herself just so happened to go see as a child!)
While it ended up being used in Cinderella, it's originally from a different show. I thought he same thing too
@@Joe_Parmesan apparently it’s in the 1997 tv version but the original Broadway version doesn’t have it and neither did the 2013 revival
