  • In this video, Dr. Aditya Kulkarni (GI Cancer Surgeon, Oasis Clinic, Pune) will explain to us in brief about the appendix problem in children. In this video he will talk about the causes & symptoms of appendicitis in kids.
Appendicitis is more common in kids than in adults. It is the most common surgical problem found in kids. Children in the age group between 5 to 20 yrs are more likely to face this issue.
Most common causes of appendicitis -
Bacterial or Viral infection in the stomach
    Blockage in the appendix passage
How can we find out if the pain in the stomach is appendicitis or not?
The early signs of appendicitis can be a feeling of uneasiness, low-grade fever or tiredness, Nausea, Vomiting, pain in the stomach, constipation etc.
The pain in the stomach during the early stage of appendicitis is situated near the belly button but gradually as the disease grows this pain shifts towards the right side of the lower abdomen.
    How to diagnose appendicitis?
Doctors advise patients to undergo some tests so that they get a clear notion of the disease. Tests like Complete Blood Count (CBC) is conducted to identify the presence of white blood cells in the body. If the doctors are not able to find the presence of appendicitis through Sonography the patient is advised to undergo CT Scan which gives us a clear diagnosis.
    Treatment for appendicitis?
Appendicitis is a serious medical condition that should be treated by an expert only. There are two ways by which appendicitis can be treated -
Medical Management (with the help of medicines) - early stage appendix problems can be treated with the help of antibiotics.
Surgical Treatment is offered to those patients who show serious complications of appendicitis. Laparoscopic appendectomy is the treatment method used in most of the severe cases of appendicitis.
Is it possible to live a normal life after the removal of the appendix?
Yes, removing appendix does not affect the digestion or the movement of your body. Appendicitis surgery is very safe and has less than 5% chances of serious complications.
