If you use firefox, there's a free app that can do it for you, I think it's videodownloader, and you download straight from youtube as an mp4. However, even though it's mp4, it may register in itunes but not be transferrable to your ipod. If that's the case, just use itunes to make an ipod version. It's possible, and it's what I've done.
