The command strip adhesive is just not really meant to stick onto the foam. It’ll fall off most definitely eventually whereas as I speak all the panels I hung up using this method are still up!
I just recently hung 96 panels like this in my basement studio (18'x30' room with cinder block walls, and a concrete floor), along with some much more expensive panels for the real problem surfaces. I took cardboard, and cut it to 93"x20" and used spray adhesive to attach the cardboard to the back of the foam panels. I undersized the cardboard a few inches so that the cardboard never peeks out from behind the panels. Then I used 6 command strips on each cardboard panel, to attach them to my wall. Worked great.
Velcro will hold an elephant to a wall, however, the adhesive on the back on the Velcro will not hold the foam. The other side's adhesive may fall off the wall also. Meanwhile the hooks and loops will stay together fine! Velcro needs to be sewn or stapled to something. It will fail at the weakest link, so this Velcro may as well just be double-sided tape.
I'd imagine that the weather would determine how well the foam stays up. If you live in a cold country like me and need your heating on a lot then that might determine how well the foam stays up as the heat in the room builds up.
It looks like fixing cardboard on the back of the foam may make the sticking and resticking of the foam tile a little easier. Thank you for this video. It was very helpful in assisting me come to that conclusion
Chris, yes! Great idea. Since I made this video, I’ve actually done similar to that but by combining numerous panels. What I mean by that is I found large enough pieces of cardboard to hold 4 or 6 of these panels & then I just hot glued the panels to those cardboard sheets. Then, all I had to do was 2 command strip hooks and then hook the cardboard sheet up to the wall with the panels on them! Super minimal solution that has even less chance of damaging walls for larger amounts of panels than even this method shown here! That cardboard solution has been up now for a little over 9 months and I haven’t had any issues. Only issue I’ve had is one time wind came howling through my room and that caused the cardboard sheet to come misaligned, so all I had to do was move it a little right/left (as you would a crooked picture frame) and everything was all good. Cheers!
try hanging a relatively thick carpet (rug) on the walls. It works just as good and looks a lot better. It's probably cheaper too, unless you choose a Persian rug. Don't forget to add some acoustic dampening material to the ceiling. You'll be surprised how much sound reflects off the ceiling too.
Found out it was very hard to remove the command strip from the velcro. Wound up using just the command strips and it worked fine. Panels stuck to the wall without any problem.
No problem! I'm glad you've found it helpful :). This setup sadly is not very effective in absorbing noise on the outside of the room it's placed in. That type of absorption would require sound PROOFING rather than just acoustic foam. Hope this helps!
I have a question. I am studying opera music and I really want to do something like this instead of renting a small studio all the time when I need to practice singing. How do you KNOW that this works. I don't want to put all this stuff up only to find out that my neighbors still can hear me sing. And also I don't want to disturb my neighbors either.
Hi there! The method shown in this video is to reduce reverb and echo in a room when recording audio. Acoustic foam is not meant (and does not work very well) as soundproofing which is what I believe you’re looking for. Soundproofing even a small room typically costs thousands of dollars as special types of insulation and drywall are required to reduce sound passthrough into other rooms. If you’re just looking to cut down reverb in your room when you’re recording, the method in this video should overall do just that, very well. However, you probably will have to continue renting out that small studio unless you’re willing to pay a contractor to come into your space and truly soundproof your room. I really hope this helps explain things well. I hope I could help!
Don't command strips still damage the wall? For example, would it tear off wallpaper? If so this solution doesn't help me as I am renting a place and I can't put things on the wall that may damage them. Is there a way of attaching the foam to something else and leaning it against the wall?

*For those who wanted to know*THIS METHOD DOES NOT WORK WITH AURALEX ACOUSTIC FOAM. It may work with other brands of foam. I tested this out in my house and now Wasted a lot of money on Velcro and command strips. it didn’t even take 24 hours for 75% of my installed foam to fall on floor. PLEASE TRY ANOTHER METHOD FOR WHOM EVER THIS MAY CONCERN. Good luck everybody
Hi Carson, are you only using one side of the Velcro to attach to the acoustic panel and then discarding the opposite side (the Vecro that would normally attach to the opposite Velcro)?
Yep! Although I didn't necessarily discard of the other side, I kept it if I ever needed it in the future for something :) But no, I didn't use it for the installation of the foam.
After having fucked up my last room completely with acoustic glue and double-sided tape, I'll give this a shot. Sounds promising and if the strips will actually stay on the Basotect/Melamine foam it would be the perfect solution. Just the bass traps in the corners are gonna be very difficult becuase they're partly hanging down and also heavier and I'm not so sure if the strips can support that even when using more than one. Thanks for the advice, I'll report back!
cheerio is da name Thanks! I actually painted that myself. All I did was paint a base layer, waited for that to dry then taped up some weird geometric shapes, sealed up the edges of that tape with the base layer by painting a VERY LIGHT coat of it over the tape (let that dry). Then, I painted in the spaces as I saw fit. Because I painted the base coat color over the tape before putting the darker colors in, it resulted in incredibly clean lines since the tape was sealed up to the wall. I only had 1 touch up that was required! I was super happy with the result :-).
So far this has worked out perfectly for me. I’m using 12” foam but even the bigger squares are so light that it wouldn’t make a difference. You just have to be sure to use the velcro rated for 10 lbs or some shit. The glue on those stuck remarkably well to the foam. I used about a 1” square in the center of the foam. Tried to peel a test piece off and the foam wanted to rip so I knew the adhesive would hold. The Command strips with the hook style fastener on one side stuck better to the velcro on the foam better than what came in the velcro package! I put the command strips on the velcro first then the wall. This was a great solution and thanks for the video. Good job 👍🏻

Nope! Command strips are meant to not damage paint. That’s not to say it CANT damage paint, because it definitely can! You just have to be careful when removing the command strips and you’ll be all good and safe!

Great tip on using Velcro but having acoustic treatment that high is the most un-effective positioning I've ever seen. Of course there will still be reverb
Thanks! Also, if you’re listening with headphones, there actually is a really large difference between when the treatment was not up to when it was. Of course, it’s not as effective as placing it lower near ear level but it helped with the reverb enough for my uses as it’s not like I’m using my room as a recording studio 24/7 xD. I advise to do the mirror trick rather than blindly just playing them anywhere. Basically run a mirror across your walls until your speaker cone become visible then place the foam down accordingly covering all the areas. Don't forget to place bass traps in the corners of your rooms if needed. :)
So, I watched this video and went out and bought the exact Velcro and Command Strips. I hung 30 squares of Acoustic Foam. Literally the next day, I had foam squares falling down. BE AWARE! I had 2 types of Acoustic Foam. 24 of the squares were Auralex Professional Acoustic Foam. The adhesive that sticks to the foam on the back side of the Velcro does not stay attached to this foam. Within several days, 17 out of 24 Auralex foam squares had fallen down. I had some cheaper foam that was another color (same quality in the video probably). The Velcro seemed to stay attached to the cheaper foam just fine. (They have been up for about a month and none have fallen) So, apparently this method will NOT work on Auralex Professional Acoustic Foam. I am now trying a new method for the Auralex. I bought some Gorilla glue and glued all the Velcro to the backside of the Auralex. I think this should work. We will see.............
Out of curiosity, why not just use the other side of the velcro strip on the wall instead of the command strip? would the velcro damage the wall where the command strip wont? Also, I know you painted that wall, but why skip putting panels on it as it is one of the bigger walls in the room?
Yeah the velcro is really incredibly strong and definitely could rip off some drywall😂 The Command strips are made to be put on and removed from walls so that is why I used them instead of the other half of velcro. As for why I didn’t place any foam on the other wall is because that wall was meant to be the back ground for videos and I found that the foam on all the other walls was adequate enough for sound reduction:)
Thanks for the well thought out response. So in that case, why not stick the foam panels straight to the command strip instead of adding the velcro? Would they not stick in that way? Basically just seems like an extra step in the process that doesn't seem necessary, but I did not do the project so I cannot speak to its requirements.
No problem! The adhesive on command strips is by no means strong enough to stick the foam directly to the wall. With the industrial strength velcro, the adhesive is much more tactile and is much more sticky than the command strips. Also, with there being velcro, it leaves for ease of movement of the panels if you ever plan to do so.
I have found that even the Velcro with its extra stickiness won't stick on mine, and I put a square in each corner! I am going to have to try gluing cardboard to the back of mine, it is going to be a bigger job than I thought @@carsonmtech

I tried this but the velcro won't stay glued to the foam for very long ( I had some falling off after 1 day ) . Tbf , I tried this with bass traps and column foams ( I used two 1 inch for smaller bass traps/columns and 2 2-inch pieces for bigger bass traps ) and I didn't use the command strips, but the issue was with the velcro pieces that went to the foam, the ones that went directly to the wall were totally stuck. Any suggestions?
I've a quick question for you. I'm in the entertainment business and understand how you're using the acoustic foam. I'm also involved with pyrotechnics and both these items bring to mind The Station nightclub fire of February 2003. Out of curiosity, have you broken a small piece of this stuff off, taken it outside and put a match to it. If it's untreated, you may as well have towels soaked in gasoline hanging on your walls. You'll know if you have the untreated foam as it will go up almost instantly. While I know you're not covering your walls in this stuff, 2-3 of the untreated squares will but out enough CN and CO to kill a person very quickly. Please know what you're dealing with and if I'm overreacting, please accept my apologies for the intrusion.
Hello. Can you elaborate on this more please. I'm planning on purchasing soundproofing wall panels.. How do you treat the foam? Or do you have to specifically buy treated foam?
The acoustic foam on the door are at the correct level and your voice is hitting the reflection points in the room at mouth or ear level . All the other acoustic panels are placed too high.

those 1 inch foam aren't that useful for a wide frequency range. They are only good for upper frequency absorption. Also, that foam is rebranded panels from the Foam Factory. It's cheaper to buy it direct. In fact it's cheaper to get the proper 2 inch foam panels than how much you payed for the 1 inch ones.
"Sound proofing" is actually not what most people think. This is sound dampening. It is unlikely that a room that large can become 100% quiet with just foam. "Sound proofing" to get a near quiet space may require some additional contruction. A lot of artists and talent like to use a whisper room or build a small recording booth to achieve a similar effect. A true recording studio has specific technical specifications. So no, covering his whole room in foam would most likely just make it a fire hazard without adding the benefit of making it totally quiet. Look up the law of diminishing returns. It fits this situation well.
I’m having trouble with the foam coming loose from the Velcro strips. I have 3 command strips with Velcro partners and they stay but the foam doesn’t stay “glued” to them. My foam is a little bit heavier I’m thinking.
Carson Miller I thought of that and just didn’t come back to the idea. I have some solid money into my foam and am a little hesitant but one piece as a test run is worth it compared to the frustration of foam falling off of my wall lol. Thanks for the response.
The cheapest way to install an acoustic foam panel is by putting painter's tape onto the wall and then putting hot glue onto the painter's tape and sticking the foam panel to the way. I did this and the panels stuck firmly to the way. You can get painter's tape for really cheap and you can also find hot glue and a hot glue gun at the dollar store.
Okay so I tried this method out, didn’t work when I used one piece for each. Also didn’t work when I taped up all corners...Idk if it’s the velcro or the foam but either way that’s lost money I’m not gonna be able to get back....💢 Also tried replacing a velcro piece but even then it still falls off.
Good vid. I would even staple the Velcro to the foam. Sounds good. Remember to replace the foam after a few years so that you don’t breathe it in. Best of luck ;)
I’m definitely unclear on how you affixed these. I used the same small strips you’ve used but without the Velcro and it’s been about a year and they’re all falling to the floor now. So, it’s not clear to me that you’re using two separate products apparently…? Are you affixing the little command strips to the actual Velcro pieces? I’m unclear on your process although you’re a wonderful person and I enjoyed watching your video 😎
I would be VERY hesitant to even THINK about using spray on adhesive. When you want to remove those foam panels someday (and you will want to) Good luck with getting that crap off your walls!
Carson, I have a question for you. Took my Phantom 3 Std out this am for the first time in about three months. Fully charged a Batt and Controller and took it up to about 300 ft and ran the camera a little and went a little higher and back to me and brought it down and It would not come down when It reached about 20 feet and just sat there. would not go up or down it would rotate and fly in any direction. I hit auto land and It landed and would restart and go to 4-5 feet and that is all I can do with it.. What do you think ? JOE
Yes, sound still exits the room. Albeit not as much as with the foam on the walls, but this is NOT a soundproof solution. This is a ACOUSTIC TREATMENT solution. Soundproofing involves a much more expensive process than this, typically involving replacing insulation in walls, replacing drywall with soundproof drywall, and then also acoustic treatment in the room typically. Hope this helps.

Lower them to source level (i.e. your mouth, speakers, etc.) for better results.
Reflections can bounce high in a room too. I agree about placing some mid level, but high up is fine as well.

A Whole lot of Stuff You can also hang blankets over things. Buy name brand foam. Cheap foam is not fire resistant and is extremely flammable.
You should look getting a small custom vocal isolation booth....from all the money you spend renting it may be worth it to do that instead.

Surely! You could get a piece of plywood or thin sheet of wood and mount the pieces onto that and then lean that up on the walls of choice

What is on your other wall with the geometric shapes? Is that wallpaper? Or are those individually cut pieces of something?

Yeah the command strips last a few weeks then the tiles just fall off. I predict the door ones last a few days due to constant movement.

I don't understand why velcro is needed WITH the command strips. ?
Great tip on using Velcro but having acoustic treatment that high is the most un-effective positioning I've ever seen. Of course there will still be reverb
Thanks! Also, if you’re listening with headphones, there actually is a really large difference between when the treatment was not up to when it was. Of course, it’s not as effective as placing it lower near ear level but it helped with the reverb enough for my uses as it’s not like I’m using my room as a recording studio 24/7 xD. I advise to do the mirror trick rather than blindly just playing them anywhere. Basically run a mirror across your walls until your speaker cone become visible then place the foam down accordingly covering all the areas. Don't forget to place bass traps in the corners of your rooms if needed. :)

So, I watched this video and went out and bought the exact Velcro and Command Strips. I hung 30 squares of Acoustic Foam. Literally the next day, I had foam squares falling down. BE AWARE! I had 2 types of Acoustic Foam. 24 of the squares were Auralex Professional Acoustic Foam. The adhesive that sticks to the foam on the back side of the Velcro does not stay attached to this foam. Within several days, 17 out of 24 Auralex foam squares had fallen down. I had some cheaper foam that was another color (same quality in the video probably). The Velcro seemed to stay attached to the cheaper foam just fine. (They have been up for about a month and none have fallen) So, apparently this method will NOT work on Auralex Professional Acoustic Foam. I am now trying a new method for the Auralex. I bought some Gorilla glue and glued all the Velcro to the backside of the Auralex. I think this should work. We will see.............

Out of curiosity, why not just use the other side of the velcro strip on the wall instead of the command strip? would the velcro damage the wall where the command strip wont? Also, I know you painted that wall, but why skip putting panels on it as it is one of the bigger walls in the room?
Yeah the velcro is really incredibly strong and definitely could rip off some drywall😂 The Command strips are made to be put on and removed from walls so that is why I used them instead of the other half of velcro. As for why I didn’t place any foam on the other wall is because that wall was meant to be the back ground for videos and I found that the foam on all the other walls was adequate enough for sound reduction:)
Thanks for the well thought out response. So in that case, why not stick the foam panels straight to the command strip instead of adding the velcro? Would they not stick in that way? Basically just seems like an extra step in the process that doesn't seem necessary, but I did not do the project so I cannot speak to its requirements.
No problem! The adhesive on command strips is by no means strong enough to stick the foam directly to the wall. With the industrial strength velcro, the adhesive is much more tactile and is much more sticky than the command strips. Also, with there being velcro, it leaves for ease of movement of the panels if you ever plan to do so.
Jacob Person I’be tried this in several attempts. The command strips DO NOT hold the foam. They stick on the wall just fine, but not foam.
I have found that even the Velcro with its extra stickiness won't stick on mine, and I put a square in each corner! I am going to have to try gluing cardboard to the back of mine, it is going to be a bigger job than I thought @@carsonmtech

I tried this but the velcro won't stay glued to the foam for very long ( I had some falling off after 1 day ) . Tbf , I tried this with bass traps and column foams ( I used two 1 inch for smaller bass traps/columns and 2 2-inch pieces for bigger bass traps ) and I didn't use the command strips, but the issue was with the velcro pieces that went to the foam, the ones that went directly to the wall were totally stuck. Any suggestions?
I've a quick question for you. I'm in the entertainment business and understand how you're using the acoustic foam. I'm also involved with pyrotechnics and both these items bring to mind The Station nightclub fire of February 2003. Out of curiosity, have you broken a small piece of this stuff off, taken it outside and put a match to it. If it's untreated, you may as well have towels soaked in gasoline hanging on your walls. You'll know if you have the untreated foam as it will go up almost instantly. While I know you're not covering your walls in this stuff, 2-3 of the untreated squares will but out enough CN and CO to kill a person very quickly. Please know what you're dealing with and if I'm overreacting, please accept my apologies for the intrusion.

The acoustic foam on the door are at the correct level and your voice is hitting the reflection points in the room at mouth or ear level . All the other acoustic panels are placed too high.

those 1 inch foam aren't that useful for a wide frequency range. They are only good for upper frequency absorption. Also, that foam is rebranded panels from the Foam Factory. It's cheaper to buy it direct. In fact it's cheaper to get the proper 2 inch foam panels than how much you payed for the 1 inch ones.

I read about that. I bought these foams and will try the thumb tack. I’m renting the studio, so the last thing I want is to damage the wall.
What happens when they are flatend and you have to soak them and let them dry to make them grow to size. How do I do that

"Sound proofing" is actually not what most people think. This is sound dampening. It is unlikely that a room that large can become 100% quiet with just foam. "Sound proofing" to get a near quiet space may require some additional contruction. A lot of artists and talent like to use a whisper room or build a small recording booth to achieve a similar effect. A true recording studio has specific technical specifications. So no, covering his whole room in foam would most likely just make it a fire hazard without adding the benefit of making it totally quiet. Look up the law of diminishing returns. It fits this situation well.

I’m having trouble with the foam coming loose from the Velcro strips. I have 3 command strips with Velcro partners and they stay but the foam doesn’t stay “glued” to them. My foam is a little bit heavier I’m thinking.
Something you could try is super glueing the foam to the velcro - I did try that on one panel myself and it seemed to work.
Carson Miller I thought of that and just didn’t come back to the idea. I have some solid money into my foam and am a little hesitant but one piece as a test run is worth it compared to the frustration of foam falling off of my wall lol. Thanks for the response.

The cheapest way to install an acoustic foam panel is by putting painter's tape onto the wall and then putting hot glue onto the painter's tape and sticking the foam panel to the way. I did this and the panels stuck firmly to the way. You can get painter's tape for really cheap and you can also find hot glue and a hot glue gun at the dollar store.
Okay so I tried this method out, didn’t work when I used one piece for each. Also didn’t work when I taped up all corners...Idk if it’s the velcro or the foam but either way that’s lost money I’m not gonna be able to get back....💢

Good vid. I would even staple the Velcro to the foam. Sounds good. Remember to replace the foam after a few years so that you don’t breathe it in. Best of luck ;)

Use the foam the use clothes line and hang your jeans behind speakers and jus throw a sheet or rug (rug is better) over them so it looks somewhat nice

I’m definitely unclear on how you affixed these. I used the same small strips you’ve used but without the Velcro and it’s been about a year and they’re all falling to the floor now. So, it’s not clear to me that you’re using two separate products apparently…? Are you affixing the little command strips to the actual Velcro pieces? I’m unclear on your process although you’re a wonderful person and I enjoyed watching your video 😎

I would be VERY hesitant to even THINK about using spray on adhesive. When you want to remove those foam panels someday (and you will want to) Good luck with getting that crap off your walls!

Carson, I have a question for you. Took my Phantom 3 Std out this am for the first time in about three months. Fully charged a Batt and Controller and took it up to about 300 ft and ran the camera a little and went a little higher and back to me and brought it down and It would not come down when It reached about 20 feet and just sat there. would not go up or down it would rotate and fly in any direction. I hit auto land and It landed and would restart and go to 4-5 feet and that is all I can do with it.. What do you think ? JOE

Yes, sound still exits the room. Albeit not as much as with the foam on the walls, but this is NOT a soundproof solution. This is a ACOUSTIC TREATMENT solution. Soundproofing involves a much more expensive process than this, typically involving replacing insulation in walls, replacing drywall with soundproof drywall, and then also acoustic treatment in the room typically. Hope this helps.
This is very helpful. I'm a college student and broke as fuck, so I was REEEAAALLY hoping not to have to purchase 96 command strips for my 48 panels.
