Just a note that you do not have to set ARK-RSBN to RSBN to use the PRMG equipment. When the mode switch is in LANDING position the PRMG is always in use. It is perfectly possible to fly a PRMG approach while also monitoring the outer/inner NDBs with the ARK equipment and often recommended. Also in the real airplane the command/automatic glideslope following never climbs. It flies level until the glideslope reaches the middle. This prevents the "climb to intercept" unwanted behavior. The usual glide slope is 2-2/3 degree and not 4 as in here which makes everything nicer as well.
Thank you for your helpful as well as understandable directions My wing-man and I are enjoying the learning curve of the Mig21 and it's nice to hear clear well spoken directions Cheers )
You should hit the reset flaps button, i believe if you leave one of your flaps buttons toggled you will begin to bleed air pressure from your system, which is not good as it controls your flaps, gear, brakes ect.
***** Thank you for your response. The flaps are operated by hydraulic pressure, as is the gear. The reason why you have to put the gear lever into the neutral position is because in the "UP" position the brakes are applied, which uses pressurised air. However, this does not apply for the flaps. The reason why you can reset the flap buttons has a different nature. The flap buttons are spring loaded. When you press one of the buttons, the other, active one, will raise up by a spring-force. When you park the aircraft, and one of the buttons is pressed, it's spring will degrade over time, which might cause a failure of the mechanism. Therefore when you park the aircraft for a longer time you have to push the reset button.
Thanks for another great video John! I've been struggling to land this thing without rolling several times and 'calling maintenance' to put my wings back on :) - Hopefully this will help!
For anyone who gives a damn Tested 08 April 2020 PRMG brought me down to less than 50m's of Kutaisi. In the last seconds of the approach, PRMG chases glide slope aggressively, causing a huge nose down command. I gave it throttle but PRMG wanted me to hit the ground about 30m's shy of threshold. PRMG did localize me pretty accurately, minor mm's off centerline (either that or I was leaning left with my trackir). Had to press SAU reset (like you mentioned, little red button on SAU panel, not big red button on stick), but brought her in smoothly. I think PRMG would drive you to the ground if you dont disable it. PRMG WILL GET YOU ON THE GROUND THOUGH ;D That being said, Mig 21's PRMG system doesn't have what most modern aircraft ILS systems have, a Decision Height. This would cause the Auto Landing system to actually fly level at the selected Decision Height instead of continuing down into the ground. One would still have to disable the Auto Landing mode to keep the aircraft from flying level. Ex.- if Kutaisi was 200ft above sea level, you would put the Decision Height at, let's say, 200ft (could be 100, could be 300, whatever the conditions call for). Meaning 200ft above threshold is the minimum distance at which you should see the runway and be able to take over the rest of the landing manually (not to be confused with true, full born, Automatic Landings).
From the manual: "When in the “Automatic” mode, the SAU will take control of the aircraft's pitch and bank channels, while trying to maintain the aircraft on an ideal approach path (localizer and glide path are within the NPP central circle marker). Note that the SAU does not have control over the throttle, gears or flaps. Thus, the pilot should take care to adjust approach speed and deployment of gear and flaps. During an “Automatic” approach, the pilot should observe the aircraft's altitude and disengage the SAU (using LV54 button), once the altitude measured from the runway threshold reaches 100m, which is about 1km out from the threshold itself. From that point on, the approach and landing are manual."
Thanks for the feedback. I will try to make some more videos. Bombing has been requested as well as NDB navigation. Not sure what else to do, but if you have any suggestions, let me hear them!
Hi John.. I learn so much from watching your tutorials - thank you In this video you emphasise the issue concerning the RESET button.. this now appears to have been fixed. Actually, I wanted to ask a question concerning the green SAU lights... in your video, when you select AUTO, only one light comes on - has this also changed because when I select AUTO both AUTO and COMMAND lights come on?
Hi Slicker, Thanks for your kind words! Unfortunately it has been a while since I have flown the Mig, so I am not sure if there have been any recent changes affecting that logic. Maybe someone else on here knows the answer? Best regards, John
Hi John! Great tutorials! Would you be able to do a tutorial of the Big box construction with RSBN. I pulled it off in the tutorial but am not clear on the small numbers 2 3 and 4 mentioned in the tutorial.
Thanks for the offer Nymerie! I would enjoy flying with you. I am on pacific time USA. I am looking foreward to the video tutorial xxJohnxx Thanks so much..I will keep my eye out!
Press Right CRTL+Up Arrow. That'll bring up the kneeboard. Then press Right CRTL+ Left Arrow a few times. You'll come across a page that says "RSBN Caucasus"... that's the list. The numbers on the far left, like 16 for Batumi, is what you put into the RSBN and PRMG selectors. Kneeboard = gold Contains info for ARK, too. Those are maps with sectors for an area, then numbers that are close to blue circles. Ex. Sector 2/II,4 would be a beacon. Ok I'm ramblin P.s. the kneeboard is accessible in aircraft (in game), not in mission editor
"this technology is very old" well at least we have it in the game unlike FC3 aircraft, but if they had this for FC3 aircraft it would be way too easy. Great tutorial though, you should consider making a tutorial for Mirage 2000c nav and landing as well. I did have to watch the tutorial a couple of times, but thats the same for everything especially Calculus ;)
+GooseGamingHD Yeah I will definatelly make a M2000C navigation video, however, so far the INS is not working properly. Once that is fixed, I will do a video on it :)
Generally I do recommend all of the DCS modules. I have not been disappointed so far. If I had to decide between MiG-21 and F-86 I probably would go for the MiG-21. To me it offers a bit more. Not to understand that wrong though, the F-86 is fun as well. Dogfighting the MiG-15, dropping bombs with the LABS and low level flying are very entertaining. However the MiG-21, being a newer aircraft, has much more advanced systems, and a lot more to learn in my opinion. Graphics wise the MiG-21 is probably the leading aircraft within DCS.
xxJohnxx Yeah, it's the best graphicwise, but it's also the most demanding mod in terms of CPU, GPU and RAM; it's a real FPS-killer. Furthermore, in multiplayer mode people will curse you if you connect to server and get a mig21, as it causes all the others to have a lag, so people are mad at those assholes with migs. That's why many servers went and removed the option to take mig21, so that mig morons won't lag all the others, lol
***** While the MiG-21Bis might be an FPS killer for some people, it runs pretty decent on my system. Even when recording I get the same frame rate as with the F-86. However, the whole situation will change by the end of this year, when EDGE is released. The whole connection lag thing is already fixed in the beta 1.2.11 version which was released a couple of days ago. 1.2.11 will be released in this week, so that issue will be solved soon.

wonderful video and very instructive for us new players who will buy a mig-21 and learn basic about it and the system and every button

John, are you a real pilot bud? You sound just like a commercial passenger pilot when you speak.
Nevyn Tanis Hey Nevyn,
Nope, I am not a commercial pilot. However, I do have a private pilot licence. ;)
