"Parisians have threatened to poo in the River Seine in a protest ahead of the Olympics.
People angry at the expense of cleaning up the river have rallied under the hashtag #JeChieDansLaSeineLe23Juin, which translates as "I shit in the Seine on 23 June".*

The Young Turks are fearless in talking about the issues that matter. We are a rare show that combines all of the news that people care about in one place. We cover politics, entertainment, sports, and pop culture; all through a progressive lens.
What does it mean to be a “Young Turk?”
    According to the American Heritage Dictionary;
    1. Young progressive or insurgent member of an institution, movement, or political party.
    2. Young person who rebels against authority or societal expectations.
"Sharp-witted, persuasive, and inspiring, calling out toxic Republicans, politely-ineffectual Democrats, and mealy-mouthed media mavens in equal measure, JUSTICE IS COMING will give heart to Democrats and progressives who seek to change our politics and society for the better.
The media can’t stop talking about the gridlock in Washington, as if a handful of stubborn Republicans are the only thing standing between us and a fully-functional democracy. The reality is that our government has been taken over by big business and their allies in both political parties. The getaway driver in this heist was corporate media. The good news is that the American people are very progressive. And soon progressives will take over Washington as well! And when they do, the great majority of Americans will love it.
In JUSTICE IS COMING: How Progressives Are Going to Take Over the Country and America Is Going to Love It (On sale: September 19, 2023), The Young Turks founder Cenk Uygur presents two ideas that counter everything we hear from pundits and politicians on a daily basis: one, progressives are correct on all issues, and two, America is actually a very progressive country. Millions of us know that we are a part of something larger, a movement that is already transforming Washington.
JUSTICE IS COMING, a compulsively readable manifesto, seeks to apply the momentum progressives have already built to a concrete progressive agenda that activists, voters, and citizens can all rally around. JUSTICE IS COMING looks beyond Trump to the larger historical forces that have given us this unique political moment, and explains why we should fight, how we should fight, and how we will win."

0:43 No, they didn't threaten to do so. And they didn't threaten to do so over money spent on this. They did it as basic hathred of Paris for some people, and basic hathred of Paris' mayor and/or Macron for others. It wasn't a threat, as it would imply "do otherwise, or else"... in this case, it's mainly a response for how angry people are of the politics done by these elected officials for years. Hello, we don’t pump water from the Seine river to our sink, as well as usually waste water is carried to water treating plant.
Waste water only goes into the river as an overflow, and the people in charge of sewer really hates it when it happens.
This spring we had unusual amount of heavy rain, so the system overflown. Bad design of the new infrastructure ? Probably 😢
There’s a place we you can visit the sewer system in Paris, very interesting.

    • @cosmodin1882

The thing is that they want to spend 1.5 billion dollars on cleaning the river Seine for the Olympics (not even sure that the effort will be maintained once the circus is out of town...) while populations in French overseas territories don't have access to drinkable tap water (Reunion, Mayotte) or have to suffer very frequent water supply interruptions (Guadeloupe, Martinique). We're always told there is not enough public money to fix these problems, but by some sort of magic, there is suddenly a lot of cash on the table to clean the river Seine. The disparities in the government's priorities are striking here.

  • @luvzfrance24

Historically, the French have been known for their abysmal sanitation practices. It was the Romans who introduced a water-filled canal system in an effort to carry away human sewage. Prior to that, the Parisians would simply throw it out of windows (and God help the people walking below!). The invention of the bidet helped with personal hygiene, and potent perfumes took care of the stench. But even today, there is little regard for sewage treatment...and where it goes after the "flush"!!

$2 billion? and the french are revolting like this? The Pentagon just spent $30 billion to develop and built 32 ships thru LCS program and now they are retiring the vast majority of these ships cause they dont them some ships are just 2 years old and they are gonna retire it, they are only keeping 6 or so and because Congress ordered them to do so and not just that, Congress also ordered the Navy to finish building the ones they ordered even the ones that aren't actually being built at the moment.
And this is one program, when it comes to fund food, infrastructure, healthcare, education programs, sorry no money.
We pay our taxes and we get close to nothing or nothing meaningful but mostly nothing.
France has taxes around 45% Denmark too as does other countries but they services REAL returns for the money they put in, nothing perfect but at least they are bankrupting its citizens to transfer billions to corporations.

it's not. they're doing nothing to really make it clean, just to have it at an acceptable level for the olympics. Our politicians don't care if it's dirty again right after it. if they did they'd regulate more what the industries can throw in it, not just cleaning it up for a few weeks.
The only time in living memory where the water was actually clean was during the covid lockdowns.

4:52 exactly, the homelesness problem in France is far from the sorry state it is in the US, but it didn't stop Macron from spending taxpayer money to send every homeless person they found in Paris elsewhere in France. Not find them homes, just send them to other towns.

British Columbia suffered when Vancouver hosted Expo, the Olympics and now World Cup. The debt was crushing and the homeless were forced out. It's pathetic what the rich do for entertainment.

5:30 Hum, I would be very surprised if they fixed homelessness even for a time. What they do in Paris is "encourage" homeless people to go elsewhere. There is also some kind of agreement so they can take the train without a ticket to get away from Paris

Of course money invested to cleaning up the river would have made important advancements if used on the social front, but you cannot say that the current Paris administration is not concerned by the social problems. Also, the money used went mostly (I believe, don't quote me) to a new sewage system connected to a gigantic reservoir destined to hold raining waters in case of major rain to avoid an overpowered sewage system to dump extra load directly into the water (as is was currently doing on a regular basis). The origin of the "movement" was on X, but probably initiated by people who hate mayor Anne Hidalgo because of her policy towards diminishing the place of cars and enhancing the place of biking and parks.

For the past several Olympic years, I've watched and read news stories that shine a light on what a moneymaking racket the Olympics are, and the burden that they place on the citizens of the host cities/countries. Does the Olympics even serve a purpose in today's world? We already have many other international sports events, and the idea that the Olympics somehow "unites the world" is a sad joke. If they are really determined to continue with this archaic institution, they should pick one place to permanently host it where they can build all the necessary infrastructure and actually use it more than once.
