I love this video, that Pickup moves across that terrain with all the finesse and tact of a mountain goat.
For those not familiar with this generation of truck, the whole heep/pickup debate is irrelevant; these trucks are in a class of their own, they're little mechanized pack-mules, short on top speed, long on endurance. The "big argument" is entirely off-base.

longer wheelbase of the yota helps a bit, but the tires make the real difference imo.

The Jeep took a bank on the left when the Toy just took the easy ramp, and the last run for the Jeep for the back up the embankment at the end, he guns it like the Toy driver did the first time. A little-more-than-lifted TJ > the heavily modified Junkanese Toy, I'd say. Nice Jeep demonstration. Thanks Mike

i totally agree with you, but I am 17. I used my college fund for my car. I have $12,650 total into it. That covers a new radiator, electric fan, power steering pump, brake pads and cables, and a starter motor. If I had jeep money I would buy one because EFI is nice, but for my budget I have gross amounts of power, 33 inch mutters (I know tiny), disc brake upgrade, a super 44 front, super 9 inch rear, crawler power steering, and rancho 9000s.

  • @fredzeppelin3969

Jeeps are swell, notwithstanding all the current models that would never survive a real 4x4 trail. But those 1st gen Toyota 4x4 pickups were beasts. Low gearing, solid axles/leaf springs, and a ton of clearance under the center. And the 20/22R(E) was no powerhouse, but a nice low torque peak helped. Kudos to the "Hilux."

I have owned a 1985 Toyota pickup with straight axle and EFI and it was an awesome truck. I have also owned a 2001 Tacoma I bought new and lifted and put bigger tires on. It had a rear locker. Currently own a 2005 4Runner. I also owned an 1985 Jeep CJ7 which I loved. It was mildly lifted with 33 tires. It would out wheel my Toyota's mostly because of the lift and tires and straight axle. I currently have a 2006 Jeep TJ Rubicon model lifted, 35s, low gears, locked front and back and it is my best wheeling rig yet. With that said my Toyota's were/are super reliable and just feel built better from the way they shift, drive, don't leak oil, etc. my Jeeps never left me stranded but they are not of the same quality of Toyota. I am currently trying to find a first generation 4Runner to build. Last weekend a guy in a 86 4Runner left me in the dust. I had to winch where he didn't. He had double transfer cases, 40 inch tires, etc. it's all about how the rig is built and sometimes the longer wheel base does help on some climbs. I seemed to have an advantage on the rocks with my shorter wheel base. One thing Jeeps can do is take off the tops during the summer, my favorite part. Jeeps and Toyota's are my favorite, I just wish you could get a straight front axle from the factory as the IFS On modern trucks do not work for hard core wheeling.

Fiat owns 51% now... that's irrelevant. Today the Cherokee and Wrangler are two of the best vehicles for offroading out of the box. Great price, tons of aftermarket parts, reliable, easy to work on, easy to modify, and very capable in stock form. I was defending Taco's in my last post and you still attack me? I have great respect for Toy's and many other vehicles. Argument aside, wrangler's beat anything else in stock form. I don't think the unimog belongs in this conversation either.

1TonTaco I can't bite behind a computer screen and only FJ Pavement Cruisers think Toyotas are anything different than a pavement crawler rigged with cement-hugger accessories. Perhaps the 1980 commuter vehicle is a step down from a pre-1995 Nissan Xterra at best - who cares as Toyota is often passed up as an off-road option due to countless limitations. FJ Loser capable???? Perhaps for an iPhone cradling, Starbucks slurpin', cowboy with a COEXIST sticker on the bumper ... or perhaps a 1TugTaco wishing to be a 1TuffTaco throwing insults behind a computer screen ... OUCH! I bet your driving skills match your toughness - just a guess (educated guess).

I think I'd rather drive the jeep in this case, I like a challenge when off roading.

Name brands don't matter once you start putting on 35 plus inch tires 4 inch plus lift kits gears and lockers.I wonder how much Toyota is still in that rig

Wranglers are expensive but they are worth it.

I would bet a dollar that the yota had dual lockers, where the jeep did not.

Well of course but its not a stock roll cage is it? Of course you can make your own roll cage and make it 100x better than a stock one. Just like ones in a rally car.

I almost got a used jeep but I ended up getting a 1975 early Bronco. It is almost the same size as a Yota pickup but maybe a little shorter. For the money of a mostly stock beat up jeep you can get other MUCH BETTER vehicles with great off road parts and in my case 400 hp.
