I live in az, in this area, and this man was a joke. He spent all his tax money chasing down gardeners while having the highest unsolved violent crime rate in the area. He did nothing but go out of his way to embarrass Mexicans. I breathed a sigh of relief when he was finally out of position. I celebrated when he had charged brought against him. And now, now, Im just sitting here pissed off.
A number of years ago, my wife, who is half Latina, and half Native American, was pulled over by Arpaio's goons. She spent 4 hours on the side of the road, in handcuffs while they tore her car apart while asking her for her papers, and where the drugs were. Eventually there were 3 cop cars and a K9 unit, and 6 cops milling around sucking up taxpayer dollars. Then, without a word of explanation or apology, they uncuffed her, got in their cars, and left. As far as I'm concerned, Arpaio will never be dead enough.
vick3d, wow racist much? I mean your making statements while assuming the worst up front. Also you do realize the constitution has the freedom from unreasonable search and seizures right?
vick3d Way to defend a police state. Do you only quote the 2nd ammendment? Police officers are not authorized to detain you without probable cause. Ethnicity is NOT probable cause. We should not make it easier to allow officers to trample the Constutution. But you being a right wing nut job don't see anything wrong with it because they oppress black and brown people.
As a Canadian I don't understand how this can happen. This story about Arpaio and US prisons plus other makes me never to want to live in the US and don't even want to visit the US anymore. How can your nation accept this and let this go. I thought your 2nd amendment was to protect against tyranny and it is more than apparent that the US government on many levels is tyrannical.
The problem is that most people that won't shut the fuck up about the 2nd amendment happen to be the right complexion to not worry too much about men like him.
And Trump had to be elected president for you to notice these facts? Dude US is a terrible fucking place to live, stay the fuck away i am serious i got the fuck outta there wish I had done it sooner.
Personally, I loved the look of shock on Arpaio's face when he was doing an interview after he accepted the pardon where the interviewer finally got him to understand that by accepting the pardon, he is admitting guilt.
There's actually some legal ambiguity on that point. While the conventional interpretation is that that's the case, there is nothing in the law that actually limits the president's pardoning power to the guilty. The president could pardon me of kidnapping the Lindenburg baby and I could accept that pardon. No reasonable person would conclude that I was actually guilty of that crime regardless of my plea. I think it's a minority opinion among legal scholars that it can work that way but it isn't wholly unheard of among those who debate the topic.
In order for you to accept a pardon Don't you have to be convicted First of a Crime? HUH! Did I miss something. That man was guilty of all kinds of moral and illegal shit!😠
@@o76923 sorry bud but that's a pretty shit argument ain't it? Why would the president give you a pardon for something you've never been convicted of? Seriously bud think that one through for one second. Talking about "legal scholars" smdh lmao
The real horror of this is that people who were being held on suspicion of a crime were being subject to torture and inhumane treatment. In my life, I have been arrested and held for crimes I didn't commit on two separate occasions. In both cases, despite the crappiness of being in jail, I can say that not being tortured and abused (and possibly murdered by law enforcement officials) was a plus. ANYONE can be falsely accused of a crime and arrested. Yes, even you. And in Arpaio's jurisdiction, that could have meant being maimed and/or possibly dying while awaiting trial. Anyone who doesn't have a problem with this needs to think a little more. People like Joe Arpaio need to be in prison, not in positions in power over others.
Ok. An interesting fact I suppose. However Stating facts about a person or subject that has no bearing on the topic at hand is considering using it as a defense. Its called trying to divert the subject to justify the actions of the person in the original topic at hand. So you can claim you are just stating the facts. But if you weren't aware of what I had just stated above. You now know. Which means any further attempt to talk about something irrelevant to the subject at hand means you are using it for a defense. And using things irrelevant to the debate immediately makes you wrong. Because If you haven't noticed lately. There's a growing trend that anyone who brings up something that another person has done that has no bearing on the debate. Is immediately the loser of the debate.
I used to think a LOT less of Arapaio before this segement, truth be told I had forgotten he'd recieved the pardon. I don't 'mind' much because it does not seem like Trump will do this much - and plenty of Presidents pardon in similar cases, albeit towards the end of their terms. Just that Arapaio was -finally- voted out, I can live with it more. And that he was convicted of breaking the law. The entire thing is an embarrassment and shameful, but I'm glad and hopeful things are improving.
John Adams, at the close of the Revolutionary War, was called a traitor for standing up for the rights and liberties of British soldiers. When he tried to protect them, legally, from unconstitutional punishments, he was branded a traitor by many. His reasoning was, "We cannot say that we stand for liberty if we only stand for our own liberty." I'm a student preparing to become an attorney, and the point of criminal defense is to ensure that a criminal's rights are not infringed upon. That's the point. We aren't saying you shouldn't enforce the laws, we're saying you shouldn't infringe upon the rights still retained by criminals, and you shouldn't infringe upon the rights of ordinary people just because you think they're a criminal.
Thank You! I'm a descendant of Adams and more than writing his states constitution or helping win the revolutionary war or eventually becoming President (arguably a failed one, arguably a man doing the best with a crappy situation) The stand he took against unethical treatment and prosecution of British Soldiers is in my opinion, his proudest moment.
I wish that John would have talked about the time that Arpaio staged an assassination attempt against himself in order to boost his popularity. His fall guy spent 4 years in prison and eventually won a multi-million dollar lawsuit. John also should have mentioned the fact that Arpaio has cost Maricopa county and the state of Arizona nearly 200 million dollars in other lawsuit settlements.
...like frivolous lawsuits against him by the DOJ which hasn't been able to nail him with anything more than this ridiculous 'contempt of court' which is for him to actually cooperate with the Federal ICE program? Can't say I blame Joe for assholes trying for literally decades to get him fired. Rule 1 ) Never trust a quote less than a paragraph long. Rule 2 ) Always check for bias on BOTH sides. Rule 3 ) Always follow the money on BOTH sides.
"As far as this White House is concerned, for the next few years, law enforcement won't be expected to do their jobs the way the constitution or the courts say they should." - looking back from 2020, these are prophetic words.
hits different after january 6th, after rudy giuliani's house was searched by the feds, after matt gaetz is under investigation of sex trafficking of a minor, after alan weisselberg (trump org cfo since trumps dad was in charge) was arrested, and after nyda cy vance is investigating trump org
Yes, prisons hold convicted criminals serving their sentence (i.e post-trial). Jails primarily hold people who have been arrested but are not yet convicted (i.e. pre-trial). Some short sentences are also served in jails.
You know what kills me inside? Arpaio's office was accused of ignoring Sabrina Morrison, a teenage girl suffering from a mental disability. On March 7, 2007, the 13-year-old was raped by her uncle, Patrick Morrison. She told her teacher the next day, and her teacher called the MCSO. A rape kit was taken, but the detective assigned to the case told Sabrina and her family that there were no obvious signs of sexual assault, no semen, or signs of trauma. As a result of the detective's statements, Sabrina was branded by her family as a liar. Her uncle continued to rape her repeatedly, saying he would kill her if she told anyone. She became pregnant by him, and had an abortion. The family did not know that the rape kit had been tested at the state lab and showed the presence of semen. The lab requested that the detective obtain a blood sample from the suspect, Patrick Morrison. Instead of obtaining the blood sample, or making an arrest, the detective filed the crime-lab note and closed the case for four years. And while the uncle was eventually put in prison, I can't help but wonder what's going on in her mind now that Arpaio was pardoned.
Wow I was just about the comment the same thing. Honestly for years I had no interest at all in politics. I hate both sides think they have some pros but a lot more cons. So I never gave a shit who was elected it never gonna make the country that much better or worse at least in my eyes. It wasn't until my GMA moved into my house a year and a half ago who is obsessed with watching the news. That was when I finally started actually be basically forced into listening to Trump. And was when I realized WTF do we have for a president. I hated Hillary to so just figured due to never locking into anything how bad could Trump really be compared to her. After listening to him speak for a only a few days I started to just want to yell at my TV whenever he was on it. And now just recently I got into this show I always liked John but never much cared for this show as I had zero interest in politics. But due to how much my hatred for Trump grew I began to binge watch all these videos on TH-cam. Just so I could learn more about how truly fucked up Trump is not only as a president but as a human being. Just came across this video today. And when I went to look into Joe Arpaio I came across this same story. As well as the 400 other cases of rape that his office did little to nothing about on almost all of them. The 32 cases of children being raped where his office in fact literally did nothing about because they were Hispanic children who were raped. Even though in 28 of those cases they had legit suspects yet his office never once questioned any of the suspects never went to the families of the children to check them with a rape kit they did nothing at all just threw each and every case away like it was nothing. Dude deserves a punishment worth then death at this point for all the pain and suffering he has caused.
I don't believe for a second that Joe Arpaio cared about anybody being sexually assaulted. I'm willing to bet there were plenty of his deputies in the county jail doing it themselves
oh god, you seriously believe the "fake birth docs"? still? why can't you just admit you're a racist? why do you need absurd lies to make yourself feel better? own up to being a shitty person. you are a shitty person. I know it, everyone else knows it. Surely you know if you feel the need to hide behind such lies. Take credit for that. Fake birth docs. come on. that's an insult to yourself, you cannot possibly be *that* stupid, could you?
C A This is nothing but deflection or trolling. Meant to piss people off and distract from the conversation. It's a common tactic held by wild eyed conspiracy nut jobs and goose stepping morons.
"The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons" Dostoyevsky. I was disgusted when I saw the documentary about Arpaio's brutal jail in Phoenix. Americans should understand that if you treat a person like an animal, that person will become one. These methods are medieval and the U.S should be sanctioned by the U.N.
Unfortunately, there's this pervasive belief in the US that prisoners stop being people when they're arrested, regardless of what their arrested for (or even if it's rightful incarceration) and so they feel justified in treating those prisoners as sub-human. It really is a sad reflection on the state of this country and the world that most view it that way.
Also if you consider the fact that every single european country (Russia included) don't have the death penalty and guns are forbidden... what's wrong with America?
What's worse is this is just in JAILS, not prisons. Jails, for the most part, are were you put people who broke smaller laws, like underage drinking, or public drunkenness, things like that. They're meant for short term (less than a year) incarceration, or as John said, where the accused are held pending a trial, so many of them are NOT hardened criminals who have been going around murdering people, most of them are just idiots who did something stupid, but not monstrous or dehumanizing.
+SacridFire Do you think that a murder-perpatrator will become a use to society once they are subjected to bad treatment? Or will they hate society even more? Are they kept there to rehabilitate or to stay there and cost money?
I'm from Phoenix and this is exactly the shit we've had to deal with plus some, with sb 1070, Joe, and now ducey (our governor) is slashing funding to make our schools worse than Puerto Rico. Not that Puerto Rico is awful, just that we have the single lowest school funding in all states and territories.
I kind of find people like Jason a little inspiring, clearly very cognitively challenged, yet still able to just barely string a sentence together typing on a computer. Way to go, you!!! I bet you even learned to tie your shoes too! Atta boy!
-Say they defend the Constitution -Pardon man who violates the Constitution >Don't like being called racist >Pardons racial profiler +Say they know the meaning of legal +Pardon a federal convict
Michael Priest As sick, disturbing, and shameful as it is, the FBI also let pedophiles go free. LAPD also let pedophiles go free, and the list goes on and on. So what's ur fucken point?
Jon, this is in regards to your WNEP bit. I'm from the area. You have NO IDEA how much this is blowing up. This may just be the most NEPA (North Eastern PA) thing I've ever seen. This is the biggest news story to hit the area in A WHILE, not even kidding. NEPA is a boring place filled with elderly complaining about the train set on the 7 o clock weather. Jon, you are A RAY OF FREAKING SUN SHINE and literally made all of NEPA's residents something to smile about! Seriously one of the coolest things I've ever seen, THANK YOU!! For the train, for you're hilarious content, and for being a damn legend Jon Oliver. You sir, are my hero. NEPA loves you
Arresting people for a reality show is an absolutely TERRIBLE idea. I get the logic that these people have committed a crime, therefore humiliating them is fine. But... Criminals have intricate personal lives like the rest of us, and using your political authority to publically shame and humiliate them has the potential to seriously hurt them and drive them even further away from the system. Why would they want to start obeying the law when they've been hurt by those that create and enforce them?? The entire philosophy behind Arpaio is greedy and stupid
I share the sentiment, but I'd go further. Arpaio IS greedy and stupid. His "entire philosophy", in any society that calls itself "free", is destructive and dangerous.
Yes he's been replaced, by the voters in a general election with Sheriff Paul Penzone, the Democrat candidate. He'll be sheriff for 4 years until the next election, then whoever has the "R" by their name will be our next sheriff. Arpaio was costing Maricopa county high MILLIONS in attorney's fees defending his racist idiocy in court, and even the voters who adored him were sick of it.
In the middle of the video, that woman described how she tried to stop someone from being choked to death.. It sounded very familiar. Then the two guys who didn't care got promoted.
Spencer Evenhouse he released inmates private parts, possibly underage, his inmates call him hitler, he repeated arrest people for the colour of his skin- which he admitted, complete disrespect for human life and a shit ton more.
While I can agree that the show had ill-intentions and catered to the lowest common denominator in terms of entertainment...I can't feel sorry for the subjects. They had warrants. People with warrants get arrested.
@Asim Malik you know, 90% of the time when you see a reply completely unrelated to the original comment or the video as a whole, it's a religious thing i didn't expect the promotion of tim hortons
I was an ASU professor when he arrested me during a bitter divorce fight. I was tortured and nearly died. I had dangerous health issues they refused to treat. I lost all my money while in jail, had to use an overworked appointed attorney, and had to take a "plea bargain" to a fictional "crime" just so I could get moved from jail to prison where I could get at least some minimal medical treatment. I never worked again after prison, became homeless, and nearly died from that as well. (PS: I'm using a pseudonym to protect myself...)
As a Mexican living in Phoenix, hearing Arpaio was being investigated and going through trial were some of the happiest moments for our community. And though this is a setback, seeing Trump impeached will join those.
This is a clear signal from Trump to anyone who might be asked to bring witness against him - if they shut up, he will pardon them! I'm afraid your community hasn't seen the worst yet - it's going to become a lot worse! Every time Trump needs to do something to maintain his popularity among xenophobic Trumptards, you are first in line to become the scapegoat!
Trump is setting a bad trend so far when it comes to the presidential pardon. Supporting people willing to circumvent the law in order to discriminate against immigrants, it's hard to argue that Trump isn't a racist when he's willing to give them actual get-out-of-jail-free cards.
Not to mention the implicit promise of a possible pardon by Trump for anyone that helps him in the Mueller investigation and just might find themselves in legal hot water for it.
Axel Pingol Key differences. Nixon was already convicted. One can argue that Ford pardoned Nixon to bring the two parties closer together. Poor argument but used nonetheless. Also, the pardon has been used fairly responsibly with few exceptions. Clinton and Ford being the examples.
So you're saying that in this false reality you have set up that this situation would be terrible? I agree, but back in actual reality you do realize that arpaio did legit nothing wrong? Have you even looked up what he was charged with? Contempt of court. Contempt for a court that was lead by a judge who had plausible bias towards convicting him followed up with a persecution team that was going off false leads and trumped up charges. he was facing felony charges and they couldn't get them to stick, in the end he got landed with a misdemeanor that can be levied against anyone who is receiving a trial by the judges whim. Get out of la-la land and return to the real world please. Fuck off with your "immigrants" shit they were illegal, that makes their presence here a crime. Deal with it.
Helios Comis - did you know that there are an estimate of between 1-2 million US citizens in Mexico. and it's estimated that over 90% of them are in there in an "illegal" status. would you be OK if they were prosecuted and thrown into a concentration camp in a desert? O_O besides arpaio was held in contempt because he was detaining anyone that looked Hispanic without another reason. and he refused to stop these racial profiling arrests. so... how does that prove a bias by the judge? *racial profiling IS illegal*. so you calling TM King to get back to the real world is worse than the pot calling the kettle black
+Barkofanboy He made the mistake of starting high-up, he should've chosen a lower key. Also, I think he still in the middle of dropping his balls, so that makes for a unbalanced key-range.
Joe Arpaios whole department did the exact same crimes the Schutzstaffel committed in WW2. If trump supports Arpaio he's no different from hitler himself.
Benedict Waiharo but to be more specific & on topic its more like get well soon Arizona.. the rest of the country will forever have infinite (& more pressing) problems to deal with. There is no ~America getting well, that's just a fallacy. There is no ~make America great again, that's simply just a farce. So for now, we watch in disbelief as our brilliant & trusty president mr. Trump, apparently deals with this problem the best way his small mind knows how.. blindly stamping his approval in big bold letters "PARDONED" ~in a box that doesn't even really exist, & all in the name of his beloved Sheriff Joe Arpaio... I mean what more logic & reasoning do we need than that right lol? And so in that one swift motion, all of the crimes & atrocities committed by one "Uncle Joe" (as he was famously referred to in Az), are given 2 (small) thumbs up, with a pat on the back & an atta' boy! (p.s. Joe meet me in Marine 1 later for that BJ you promised me, and bring the lube ;) -Donnie)... Meanwhile, bringing this back to my main point, we here in Az are left with a freshly tarnished image thanks to this injustice, almost like an episode of Unsolved Mysteries ~except we've all already saw this episode & know exactly how it ends..so we will never know if the aliens will return that one guy. But basically yeah, get well Az, cuz anybody outside of the state will always see us as the descendants of that piece of shit of a man Arpaio was, & forever will be. Tomorrow is a new day, but also another day for Trump to fuck up. So FML pretty much.
kinda makes sense for trump to pardon a man who closes his eyes and sticks his fingers in his ears when sexual assault is brought up. This truly is the golden age of america
"Frank Sinatra's My Way the universal anthem of assholes everywhere" *Nervously looks around hiding the fact that it is a song that I've sang at karaoke
If you were to lock up every Latino you saw on the streets, of course the crime would go down because you're making broad arrests regardless of who these people are. This is like saying you cured cancer by killing everyone who has cancer.
Giving police the power to torture prisoners will certainly raise the negative incentive for crime. That's one of the fundamentals for Police States. Like the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany. Of course, when the actions of the police are effectively undocumented crimes, the lowering crime rate can be a bit misleading. For instance, the occasions of torture and beatings weren't recorded "assaults". And when those went too far, none of the over 100 deaths caused by old Joe's tactics (many of the victims of which were later proven innocent) are included in crime statistics. They weren't recorded as "murders". What am I doing? I'm sure you're just a troll. (Edited because I can't use your/you're correctly.)
John Duncan your facts are completely wrong. Crime stats didn't go down, they went up. If you don't believe me go look at a story the tribune won a Pulitzer for. It's a giant expose on sheriff Joe. Just go to the Pulitzer site, and search sheriff joe. You should be able to find it. Then get your facts straight after educating yourself a bit more.
6 minutes in and I'm disturbed. What in the world is wrong with people? Why is the American culture all about punishing, shaming, and blaming? We need to reevaluate why we have no compassion nor value life.
I'll never forget when, back in high school, one of my friend's dad was deported back to Mexico for absolutely no reason. He was married to a legal citizen and had children born here in the States. All I remember is seeing my friend and his family on Channel 3 news, crying for help in getting him back home. Shortly after that coverage, I could tell that my friend was depressed. He turned to a life of partying, messing around with sedatives to help him cope with the pain. I haven't talked to him since graduation, but the path he was going down was absolutely heart-wrenching. Seeing an A+ student that had everything going for him turn down the road to failure is what a messed up government will do to our children. For that, I flip the bird to Arpaio, and especially Trump for pardoning him due to the fact that he "secures the borders." Yeah, whatever... More like discriminates against the Latinos. P.S. - I also went to the Trump rally that was held a few weeks ago here in Phoenix just to hear him speak on the whole Arpaio situation. Nothing but people screaming, "PARDON JOE!" When he laid his smug smile, I knew what was about to unfold. Sad world we live in.
long johnson sad world you* live in. This shit doesn't happen in proper countries, like norway, or the whole of Scandinavia for that matter. Move the fuck outta there bro.
I live in Phoenix where our summers can reach upwards of 120 degrees. To force people to live in tents out in the desert in that kind of heat is inhumane.
Just a side note: Everyone inside jails aren't convicted criminals. Some are awaiting trial and cannot afford the bail money, so they wait there. Not remember that while John is describing the treatment. (Either way, it's unethical).
The first time John mentions the word Jail, he literally says it's also people awaiting trial, and he's covered the bail half in an earlier episode...Reminding people not ten minutes after is pointless.
I wonder if John Oliver (or his research team) knows that "Guess Who's The Hitler" actually IS a board game (well, "Secret Hitler," but that's what it is).
Were all you hypocrites complaining when Obama pardoned 212 criminals back into society? This was an 85 year old man that was doing his job and lowered the crime rate in his county year after year. He has the stats to back it up if anyone here is smart enough to find it. If not, let me know and I'll do your research for you since you're too incompetent to find it yourself! LOL
What disgusts me are the apologists who try and rationalize/justify his actions. God forbid you people ever find any decency and see him for what he actually is. Have some respect for yourselves!
Joe, Dude. There is so much shit that's illegal despite no one being harmed. Sometimes shit is just illegal because the dudes in charge just don't want to deal with the shit.
Holy cow! I know that you put this video out a long time ago, but I was without the internet for a year. My daughter and I were homeless, and in a domestic violence shelter, so we didn't have access to any form of communication (except for a phone). I am just now catching up on everything stupid that Trump did between June 2017 and June 2018. Now I understand WAY more that perhaps ignorance truly was bliss...I had no idea about Charlottesville, or the pardon of Joe Arpaio. No tv, no internet, no newspaper; completely off the grid. Now I understand why Sacha Baron Cohen is going after some of the people he is on his show!!
two things: one, the republicans love this hate and intolerance, they get off on it. second, surprise, surprise, the murderous guards were not even indicted.
How hard would it be for one of those criminals to look up his address and get a friend to pay him a visit next time he walks out to his car? I really dont understand how people like this survive while being this hated...he must have amazing security or something...
So in saying that it never happened, we get that even a rabid Trump supporter still finds the idea of the woman giving birth in shackles to be abhorrent. So if (IF!) we could convince this person that some facts are true even when you don't like them, perhaps they would re-evaluate their stance on Sheriff Joe. Eh, who am I kidding. Some idiots will never change and this person will likely believe in shadowy conspiracy theories to explain away all the bad things instead.
I love that Arpaio passes as a "tough guy" but he's never done a day's hard labor or actually physically had to fight someone. He just sits on his ass and talks shit. Look up Umberto Eco's essay on ur-fascism. That machismo is an essential ingredient in right wing authoritarianism. The right loves big government. They rely on the government to wage wars and tell them who is and isn't a citizen. If someone kidnapped and tortured Arpaio for days, I wouldn't feel sorry for the guy at all. He should be locked up for being a bigger criminal than most of the people he locks up.
Everyone loves big government. As long as they're part of said government. If not, big government is a tyrannical system put there to oppress the people and needs to be put in better hands. (Their hands, to be more precise)
Unpopular Opinion Honestly, Arpaio's laundry list of crimes and negligence is so long and affected so many people (including costing millions of dollars to the people in the county) that he has caused more harm than any mass murderer.
I remember as a little kid growing up in Phoenix going to the sheriffs office with the cub scouts and hearing about the pink underwear you know the whole nine yards practically a propaganda campaign and then on the way home my dad just spending a half hour telling me how much a piece of shit joe Arpaio was. Thank the lord for my father.
People serving time do not deserve to die unless given the death penalty. Privileges are revoked, not basic human rights. Feeding people at the mercy of the state rotting food, abusing them physically or sexually, not protecting their basic life, and not allowing them escape from exposure to the elements is inhumane and morally bankrupt. Basically if the Aspca would seize your animal from you for doing it, you for sure shouldnt do it to a human being, regardless of if you think they deserve it.
i agree to all that except the part about the death penalty. personally i don't think the death penalty should exist/be in use by governments. i actually think the way the german's have set up their prisons are quite good. human rights are at the top of their version of the constitution which was rewritten after WW2, for you know obvious reasons, so their prisons are designed to help their prisoners retain their dignity, independence and get back on their feet when they get out so they don't keep going back to prison. not an expert in prisons though so don't know if other countries do it better I also don't really know where my country's prison state falls on the list.
@@southweststreetsquid feeding someone a green bologna sandwich is cruel and unusual punishment, a violation of the 8th amendment of the constitution.
lived in Maricopa county for almost 3 years.....that man really pissed a LOT of people off. Glad he's out of office but damn it Trump, y'all abusing your power here.
+Storm Williams He's pardoning a man who violated the constitution and subjected those in jail (many of which had not been proven guilty) to inhumane conditions. That is an answer.
No. No no no no no no no. We're not moving past the ARREST REALITY TV SHOW so fast. Seriously, WTF? That's one of the sickest things I've heard, and I've been watching John Oliver for a long time.
It truly makes me sick how we put an openly racist man in charge of our entire country. He has dodged one bullet after another, I feel disgraced to be an American and a veteran.
Don't be! It wasn't your service to your country that lead to this - and don't be ashamed of your country! Instead you should be angry! Angry that there is a rise in number of people who hold values that are so much against what the USA is expected to represent - and angry that there is idiots who still refuse to understand how completely bonkers it was to abstain from voting or vote 3rd party back in November 2016
It makes me sick too but we can fight. We can make sure that in our everyday lives we treat everyone with love and respect. And eventually, he'll be out of office.
So what if he's out of office? Trump alone isn't what's wrong with this country. The issues that lead to his election have been around a very long time, and we've all been willfully complacent to them. You think that'll change once he's out? I doubt it very much.
It’s a slap in the face to everyone who follows the law and to people who may have broken the law and suffered the consequences. He evaded justice just because he’s the president’s friend. It’s an absolutely disgusting abuse of power.
Xean Thomas doesn't know how the 3 branches work. Trump attempted to Pardon Arpaio before there was a (successful) conviction. Law clearly states that a Pardon is for a person who has been found guilty. Trump was attempting to circumvent how our Governing Procedures work. (But as long as you're okay with a President not caring about Constitutional Law)
Daniel Hembree well most of us have problems with a president that doesn't care about constitutional law. You must have hated Obama being in office then.
He was absolutely convicted, you fact-ignoring snowflake. He wasn't sentenced because Trump pardoned him before the sentencing. Arpaio is a convicted criminal.
"but if they were illegal, why was Arpaio in trouble?" if you break into a house because you think something illegal is going on, even if there is, you still broke into the house
Juan J. Dueñas while I agree with the point you're making, for the record, if you break into a house believing someone's life is in danger it's not considered breaking and entering, it's actually protected under good samaritan laws in most states. Though if you're wrong it can be hard to prove you thought someone's life was in danger
Juan J. Dueñas The irony is, that's the sort of thing that you usually asociate with countries like North Korea, so he's basically removing the US' ability to claim the moral high-ground.
@Juan J Duenas But what if it's your house and the police basically detained you on the basis of your skin color and basically tries to hold you indefinite CAUSE of the color of your skin. That is why the Constitution exists, it not there to protect the wrong doers, but there to protect the freedoms of an individual. And yes it may come at the cost of letting illegals stay in the country but it also protects legal from being abused.
But what if you're a fucking moron who doesn't understand what the constitution means? Oh yeah, you might then barf out something like your dumb ass comment.
I'm from Boston. I moved to AZ to escape our New England winters. I was shocked to see just how overt the racism is out there. It's sickeningly blatant and the number one reason I moved back home. I know racism exists everywhere. I'm just not used to hearing people brag about how racist they actually are. They seem proud of it.
My mom wrote a chapter about Joe Arpaio for a book about Americas best law enforcement officers, and my whole life I was forced to read it and hear stories honoring this guys greatness. I never thought he sounded that great, honestly, but in a house like that, I never had the opportunity to voice that opinion. After seeing this, I’m glad to know my gut was right. Even at six I knew actually eating green eggs and ham was probably not conducive to one’s overall health 💀💀
He had a chain gang across the street from my middle school bus stop. I have met him a couple of times. He is just how you would imagine him, and terrible person. I am very thankful that he is no longer in office.
Also high heels tend to get off from the foot a bit on stairs when you hurry down even if they're "a perfect fit". Especially if you don't know how to exactly walk with them and you sorta push your heel from the shoe with every step down you take. Happened on my graduation ceremony. To me. Didn't get no prince for it.
But the most shocking thing that no one talks about is that Immigration enforcement isn't even a sheriff's job! That's federal jurisdiction. He broke the law since the beginning doing something that was none of his business. Taking the law in your own hands is a crime.
Sleep is important, so I recomend you all to set your phones to silence. The video will still be available to go down with your morning coffee, while your sleep and clearer judgment are lost forever...
As a professional singer, hearing Arpaio butcher "My Way" was like listening to somebody run their fingernails down a blackboard. It's what my idea of hell is like. He should've been put in prison for that alone. (Just kidding, of course. He's a despicable human being and needs to be in prison for a very long time for human rights violations.)
Unfortunately, it's because Snowden is a whistleblower and those in power don't want their secrets exposed. Arpaio in this case is what Trump views as "acceptable" and "should be relieved of all consequences".
Chanmazap you don't need Snowden to expose them, you need people to wake up and pull their heads out of the sand or their ass. Lol you needed Snowden to tell you that the government monitors all communications and electronics? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The jokes "to lighten the mood" are jarring - like why would you follow a tragic death up with "oh dead flowers are the worst!" I appreciate the new Corona format so much more, and I hope the keep it
"Smile you're under arrest!" This is some serious disgusting shit. There is no human dignity left at all. I want to get angry about it but it just makes me sad knowing there are people out there as dull as enjoying this garbage.
. Except for the fact that under Arpaio, Latinos were disproportionately detained, profiled with no basis other than their skin color, and once detained they, along with everybody else in county jail, suffered cruel and unusual punishment, even while just awaiting trial. So yeah, undocumented or not, you should be pretty fucking worried if you were a latino in that county.
Pardons have been controversial in the past, but almost never has one been used on someone who was clearly guilty, deserved every bit of the sentence, and was given for purely political reasons. No part of the presidency that normally works well does so under Trump...or anyone else who is morally bankrupt, incompetent, and driven entirely by ego. We have certainly had presidents in the past who had one or maybe two of those three negative traits...but never all three at once.
Airborne Redpills How about let's not watch Razorfist anymore, the guy who has decided to pal around with white supremacist, racists, and douchebags, and who's opinion at this point is just completely compromised.
I always watch these things and be like whew, thanks for not making me go through all that by not living in the U.S but this was just heartbreaking for me to watch. it makes you want to just cry, and cry I did. I feel so sorry for anyone who had to ever go through any of this.
purplebela2 you wanted even MORE reasons for why he's evil? He had detention camps. In the desert. Do you really, really need to know more details than that one?
There actually was, which is why Trump gave him the Presidential pardon. He SHOULD be in jail but because our President thought that what he did was okay, he isn't
purplebela2 I think it was look at Arpaio in a more objective light than making it an episode of full out slander. He picks easy to digest cases and offers the deeper implications of said actions. Whereas going in deeper in one matter might confuse some people who haven't read up, or takes too much time to explain given what limited air time he has. Furthermore, he offers width, which is okay. Gist remains: Arpaio is fucking terrible.
To all the "innocent"(to those who possess basic reading comprehension & overstanding)men/women, immigrants who were innocently arrested, mistreated and incarcerated under this man's tenure/administration; God bless all of you. Mr./Sherriff J.A.: karma is the law of the return; and there is no expiration date! Thank you John Oliver. You and "Last Week Tonight" are awesome!
Given that some dumb troll responded to you, I am showing solidarity that you are not alone in feeling frustrated about the situation.

This makes me want to cry.
vick3d seriously 'that latin sass'. Generalizing much?
vick3d, wow racist much? I mean your making statements while assuming the worst up front. Also you do realize the constitution has the freedom from unreasonable search and seizures right?
Welcome to the United States of America.
vick3d Way to defend a police state.
Arpaio put pregnant women awaiting trial in his jail and some lost their babies due to the heat and malnutrition. Disgusting.
Sean Walsh Oh god, what an asshole
As a Canadian I don't understand how this can happen. This story about Arpaio and US prisons plus other makes me never to want to live in the US and don't even want to visit the US anymore. How can your nation accept this and let this go. I thought your 2nd amendment was to protect against tyranny and it is more than apparent that the US government on many levels is tyrannical.
I thought that abortion qualified as murder to these people. Doesn't that make him a murderer?
Or were they Hispanic so it's okay?
The problem is that most people that won't shut the fuck up about the 2nd amendment happen to be the right complexion to not worry too much about men like him.
And Trump had to be elected president for you to notice these facts? Dude US is a terrible fucking place to live, stay the fuck away i am serious i got the fuck outta there wish I had done it sooner.
Personally, I loved the look of shock on Arpaio's face when he was doing an interview after he accepted the pardon where the interviewer finally got him to understand that by accepting the pardon, he is admitting guilt.
Evian Thaeres except for a judge and all the jurors.
200th like
@@o76923 sorry bud but that's a pretty shit argument ain't it?
Yes.
I love you, Robert.
Very well stated, Robert.
John Adams, at the close of the Revolutionary War, was called a traitor for standing up for the rights and liberties of British soldiers. When he tried to protect them, legally, from unconstitutional punishments, he was branded a traitor by many. His reasoning was, "We cannot say that we stand for liberty if we only stand for our own liberty."
I'm a student preparing to become an attorney, and the point of criminal defense is to ensure that a criminal's rights are not infringed upon.
Very well stated!
bond james I am honored to meet you, descendant of John Adams.
You're going into criminal defense? Just remember to calm your nerves before writing your resignation or suicide note so it's legible.
Landen Blume cool. do something about "guilty until proven innocent"
Including wrongful death suits.
...like frivolous lawsuits against him by the DOJ which hasn't been able to nail him with anything more than this ridiculous 'contempt of court' which is for him to actually cooperate with the Federal ICE program? Can't say I blame Joe for assholes trying for literally decades to get him fired.

This is the first time I realized that jails and prisons are not the same |D (non-english speaker here!)
Laura von Krone Most native speakers don't know💯
whats the diffrence?
Yes, prisons hold convicted criminals serving their sentence (i.e post-trial). Jails primarily hold people who have been arrested but are not yet convicted (i.e. pre-trial). Some short sentences are also served in jails.
So jails are like U-Haft? If anybody passing by knows this.
ZenoDovahkiin I guess so. Ich glaube schon :)
Arpaio was surely extremely proud of himself for that one. Every white american was most likely proud of that.

It is a measure of Arpaio's expertise as a law enforcement official that he didn't know the acceptance of a pardon is a tacit admission of guilt.

+SacridFire
Do you think that a murder-perpatrator will become a use to society once they are subjected to bad treatment?
Or will they hate society even more?
Are they kept there to rehabilitate or to stay there and cost money?
I'm from Phoenix and this is exactly the shit we've had to deal with plus some, with sb 1070, Joe, and now ducey (our governor) is slashing funding to make our schools worse than Puerto Rico.

TM King how about when obama pardoned a terrorist??...does it set a bad trend too??
Helios Comis - did you know that there are an estimate of between 1-2 million US citizens in Mexico. and it's estimated that over 90% of them are in there in an "illegal" status. would you be OK if they were prosecuted and thrown into a concentration camp in a desert? O_O
besides arpaio was held in contempt because he was detaining anyone that looked Hispanic without another reason. and he refused to stop these racial profiling arrests. so... how does that prove a bias by the judge? *racial profiling IS illegal*.
so you calling TM King to get back to the real world is worse than the pot calling the kettle black
And Trump's zealots will *still* defend him over this. There's no arguing with people who actively refuse to use critical thinking.

Hah, with my Healthcare plan?
kinda makes sense for trump to pardon a man who closes his eyes and sticks his fingers in his ears when sexual assault is brought up. This truly is the golden age of america

Just a side note: Everyone inside jails aren't convicted criminals. Some are awaiting trial and cannot afford the bail money, so they wait there. Not remember that while John is describing the treatment. (Either way, it's unethical).
The first time John mentions the word Jail, he literally says it's also people awaiting trial, and he's covered the bail half in an earlier episode...Reminding people not ten minutes after is pointless.
someone was hard of hearing, or hard of thinking to miss that statement. sorry, maybe drugs are not good for some people.
Marcus Nicholsen I wrote this comment before watching it. I just wanted to state that.

This is 100 % frightening.
Jakob Kübler I just saw It and this is more scary. Pennywise would be terrified by arpaio.
Were all you hypocrites complaining when Obama pardoned 212 criminals back into society? This was an 85 year old man that was doing his job and lowered the crime rate in his county year after year. Airborne Redpills so u agree, trump is a little bitch
Finally someone with the same feelings about orchids
I love that Arpaio passes as a "tough guy" but he's never done a day's hard labor or actually physically had to fight someone. He just sits on his ass and talks shit. Look up Umberto Eco's essay on ur-fascism. That machismo is an essential ingredient in right wing authoritarianism. The right loves big government. They rely on the government to wage wars and tell them who is and isn't a citizen. If someone kidnapped and tortured Arpaio for days, I wouldn't feel sorry for the guy at all. He should be locked up for being a bigger criminal than most of the people he locks up.
wtf, i've never seen ur- and now i've seen it twice today.
I LIVE IN A MATRIX!
Not a tough guy, just a mean bitch
It's scary how that final bit came eerily true
Watching him sing hurt my whole body lol

I remember as a little kid growing up in Phoenix going to the sheriffs office with the cub scouts and hearing about the pink underwear you know the whole nine yards practically a propaganda campaign and then on the way home my dad just spending a half hour telling me how much a piece of shit joe Arpaio was. Thank the lord for my father.
Those poor Chinese police officers: that’s a room full of people simultaneously regretting every major decision that lead to this.

"Fault"? Trump did what he thought was right. "Free"? This man was never convicted.
Xean Thomas doesn't know how the 3 branches work. Trump attempted to Pardon Arpaio before there was a (successful) conviction. "but if they were illegal, why was Arpaio in trouble?"
if you break into a house because you think something illegal is going on, even if there is, you still broke into the house
Killercomma but in Joe's case, he only heard a sound (brown skin), a very vague reason to break into the house
@Juan J Duenas
But what if it's your house and the police basically detained you on the basis of your skin color and basically tries to hold you indefinite CAUSE of the color of your skin.

Because pardoning Snowden wouldn't have made the white supremacists happy like pardoning arpaio did.

. the thing is, he was stopping and arresting Latinos no matter where they were born, so yes he's a racist and not doing his job right at all
. Except for the fact that under Arpaio, Latinos were disproportionately detained, profiled with no basis other than their skin color, and once detained they, along with everybody else in county jail, suffered cruel and unusual punishment, even while just awaiting trial. So yeah, undocumented or not, you should be pretty fucking worried if you were a latino in that county.

we need to re evaluate the law when it comes to presidential pardons.
We have certainly had presidents in the past who had one or maybe two of those three negative traits...but never all three at once.

purplebela2 you wanted even MORE reasons for why he's evil? He had detention camps. In the desert. Do you really, really need to know more details than that one?
you don't NEED more but there IS more
purplebela2 obviously not enough to actually arrest him.
