    I have a lot of experience cleaning those switches. I start off with D5, D100L, then D100. The magic ingredient is compressed air from a can in between each step. I usually also have the unit facing up so gravity helps get the cleaner where it needs to be. Work it about a zillion times and repeat. For best results wait a day and repeat the process. Those switches really need to be treated aggressively.

    Nice resto-mod work. Good to see those 'classic' transistors and pots getting replaced with modern improved versions 👍

    Wow, I appreciate the effort drilling those holes around the camera! That looks like no fun at all.
    Usually when I used pots like those I'll just fold the wiper pin to the one it's getting shorted to and solder it before sticking it in the board. That way you only have to deal with two pins.

    Everything excellent as always! If there's anything that I can make a mention on, it would have to be the Capacitor that you replaced.. the one that you showed the difference in size. Being right under or next to a heat sink, I would have chosen the same value but gone for a higher voltage rating, since the new Capacitors are smaller in size, the higher voltage rating version will tolerate the heat better and therefore last longer...
    Today as a society we have gotten used to using Capacitors at close to the voltage that they will be operating at, I have noticed that back in the old days, Capacitors were way underrated and could tolerate twice their rated voltage which I believe is the reason why they lasted so long even though they weren't as good as what we have available today.... I think that it's a good principal to work with that in mind where if size permits and there's a heat source near by, just by going up in voltage rating wherever possible will increase life expectancy dramatically... So instead of replacing it with another 25V Capacitor, I would have gone for a 35V or higher space permitting... Yeah I know it's nothing but I'm kinda like, if I'm going to put my name on something, it has to be as good as or if and when possible better than what it was...
    Apart from that.... Watching screws being removed is kinda soothing... I'm now very relaxed, thank you!

    For easier access to those switches:
    If you heat up the red sprayer straw from the Deoxit (or any other spray can) moderately and slowly with a heart gun or a match then stretch it until the straw gets thin, you can then cut the straw off and end up with this really small office that more easily can enter the shafts or notches of a lot of these difficult to clean switches like the preamp in/out switch you refer to in this video.
    It has saved me a lot of grief over the years.

    Shaky hands run in my family, all from my Father's side. Nobody has Parkinson's. My Father was an artist, and they never affected his work. I found that caffeine, fatigue, temperature and hunger affects how much my own hands shake. I know you just get used to it and learn to work around it.
    It's good to see you back to repairing.

    Dear Tony,
    I came to your channel for the superb electronics information about audio equipment, but I must admit that I enjoy listening to your narrative during my commute to and from work. I find it soothing and comforting and it feels as if I am learning from you by osmosis, as if I were your junior colleague.
    Thank you for your dedication in sharing with us.
    Peace, joy, happiness and good health in your life too and your family.
    Cheers
    Mark

      Back in the 80's we used carbon tet, then one day I came in and it was all gone. I can still smell it in my mind though.

    I knew someone who had shaky hands. Turned out it was from an interaction between two of his medications. I guess you can call too much caffeine an interaction from a medication ...lol. thanks for the video. Looking forward to the next installment.

    I strip off the insulation off the wire and push it in (ID) the red discharge tube . about a inch or two sticking out
    of the tube. that limits the flow and directed it more into the switch. So using less the can last a lot longer
    also have real small drills sometimes I can drill and spray into the hole of the switch. Enjoyed watching take care!

    Greetings:
    When replacing pots as variable resisters, you should do two things: 1. Determine.which two pins need to be tied to result in clockwise rotation resulting in incresing value, and 2. preset the resistance to about the value of the old pot.

  • @jamesmdeluca
    @jamesmdeluca 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Greetings:
    Since you noticed the heating from those 22 or 27 ohm resistors, I would elevate them using replacement resistors by using either short lengths of plastic or phenolic spacers or just bending the resistor leads such that the leads con only go in so far.

    " Pulsed Soldering " Hahaha !...I'm a master of this technique and never new till today ! oh yeah, love relaxing and watching you work, kinda jealous because I don't have much on at the moment, would love to have a big repair of a decent amp, so will keep my eye's open, how do these amps sound ? would you call them budget or maybe towards the high end ? I'm looking for a personal amp....cheers.

    If you look at the MSDS for the d5 spray it is 5% D100 and 70% odorless mineral spirits plus R152A propellant. You can buy the D100 and mix it with mineral spirits and put it in a dropper or syringe (if your local allows) to get more precise applications.

    that pre amp switch cleaning, I would swap switches around with the moving coil/magnet switch (how often are you going to be switching between magnet or coil for cartridge input) because if it played up again it would have the same intermittent fault. Or a rework of the panel holding the switchbank for a modern switch with better contacts quality

  • @jamesmdeluca
    @jamesmdeluca 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Greetings:
    My experience with those push-push switches is that the mechanism the provides the alternate action is somewhat delicate. When possible, and accessible, I hold the switch in a position that doesn't activate the alternate action while also beiing able to move the contacts for cleaning effect.

    Hi Tony: __at 36min45sec --->There might exist an unwanted solder-bridge, ..three solder joints left of your solder-iron(were you soldering in new pots). ,,Just wanted to mention in case the HarmanKardon is still on the operatingTable. //Thanks for super-fine videos. Br, from norway.

    Greetings:
    The chemical that is the active ingredient in Deoxit is named "cramolin". The engineering/maintenance department of the Hollywood video post-production company that I was working with in the 1980's used cramolin regularly as our contact protectant chemical of choice; while using freon TP-35 for bulk electronic contact cleaning (especially video and audio patch panels). At the time, Caig Labratories had yet to change their marketing approach to include aerosol dispensers.instead of straight liquid. We may have diluted it but do not remember if we used anhydrous isopropyl alcohol (100% - no h2o) or somehing else.

  • @jonka1
    @jonka1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are different hand tremors. One is called "intention tremor" and is only present at times like Tony soldering around a camera. This can overlap with coffee tremor and an irrational fear of solder flux.

    The flashing LED at startup indicates it is going through its startup routine, but I hear "boom" on the speakers when it stops flashing. I do not have it on my other amplifiers. Is it a failure or just a feature?

    We always referred to pots wired with the wiper joined to one end as a rheostat.

    • @jamesmdeluca
      @jamesmdeluca 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, with the rheostat used to limit current and 3 wire pots used as a voltage selector. BTW: the reason for connecting the otherwise unused connection to the wiper is to set the minimum of current limiting to the full resistance in the case of intermittent contact.

    That preout switch would let you instal a Dolby Surround Decoder, I suspect that new amplifiers will use DSP processing instead of analogue circuits and using highschool maths to do the donkey work.

    • @jamesmdeluca
      @jamesmdeluca 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greetings:
      Also for connecting a graphic equalizer. The Dolby decoder (possibly noise reduction) as surround decoding would also require three additional power amplifiers (Ls, Rs, C) with levels appropriate to the two outputs (L/R) here.

  • @jamesmdeluca
    @jamesmdeluca 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Greetings:
    Just as you were comfortable relocating those 15 ohm resisters to the pc side, you can do the same with the pots as long as it makes access easier for adjustment.

  • @jonathanhendry9759

    Someone should manufacture a tiny metal or plastic wedge-shaped implement with a through hole in the center of the sharp side of the wedge, that you could put on the end of an applicator straw. The wedge could be inserted into a crevice in a switch in order to better inject a cleaning solution or deoxit.
    Hm. It might be possible to make one out of a brass .2mm 3D printer nozzle by filing it down into the appropriate shape and using epoxy to attach it to an appropriate bit of tubing. Maybe braze it onto a handle.

    At 12:08, why not lay it on it's back side to get the cleaner to flow down into the switch? It's called gravity!
    ---
    *DeoxIT* CAN'T be beat!! The new WD-40's are out that work well. But *NOT* plain old WD-40!!!!!
    ---
    At 56:45, I would have replaced the resistors and mounted them away from the board surface!
