    Dredd is not a superhero or a hero. He's a judge jury and executioner of a dystopian future police state. He not even a anti hero. He is a villain of order. He just takes his job very seriously. You can have a commited and dedicated villain who beileves in what he does. Dredd writing can be serious, comedic and satirical as the faceless side of the law. He is not a man he is a symbol of the faceless law. The word Law has no intrinsic moral or ethical good attached to it. Laws can be both unjust and unfair, but the law is the law and that's part of the joke.

    • @urchinblues7928
      @urchinblues7928 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Villains a bit too absolute to describe him. Dredd also would embody selfless sacrifice in that sense as on multiple occasions he risks and sacrifices himself to save the city. Even if it is to uphold a flawed system it’s never for his personal gain.

    • @PrivateCitizen84
      @PrivateCitizen84 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@urchinblues7928 Well it's always about the outside looking in, the audience. Not the inside looking out, Dredd the character. That Judge system by our standards would be criminally oppressive. No Jury of Peers. Dredd has executed disarmed & detained people on the spot. Dredd is a conscientious zealot. So he can still be villian from our perspective. Who takes his oppressive job seriously to the letter of the law.

      @ isn’t the point of having a protagonist to empathize with his perspective even if we don’t agree with it he still operates as the audience surrogate

    • @PrivateCitizen84
      @PrivateCitizen84 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@urchinblues7928 Dredd is a literal product of the Judges system. The Judges system is in itself a warning. So Dredd is the warning. I understand his motivation, but I also don't have to empathize with the embodiment of a warning. What I find fascinating about Dredd is the structure of warning he represents and inacts. The thing is people assign morality to words that are neutrol like law and duty. Dredd is duty bound to his legal system which is a warning to the reader.

    • @urchinblues7928

      @@PrivateCitizen84 there’s a human factor to some of his stories that struggle with the very things your drawing attention to where John Wagner shows that as much of a binary machine as he might want to be Dredd is still a man and prone to doubting the system that made him despite himself, these are rare moments but they are there and every once in a while the human in him wins out and he does something truly decent. I don’t think he’s a hero but I think there’s more to his personality than a cautionary tale

    Judge Dredd isn't a bad guy. In some of his earliest stories he shows a strong moral code. He is against slavery, extortion, and isn't scared to hold his higher-ups accountable. He lives by his code of justice, which is harsh, but he is not evil in his beliefs or actions. He would never kill someone who is unarmed and always gives his enemies the chance to give up peacefully.

    • @evanbackhouse7
      @evanbackhouse7 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      The story Trinity in Prog Number 2262 perfectly illustrates Dredd's strive for goodness. It is a crossover story with the movie adaptations of Dredd, and he lashes out at Karl Urban's Dredd for his unfair and evil approach to justice, claiming that a Judge is responsible for the wellbeing of ordinary cits.

    There are people who say he's the Bad Guy? Do they not know what the setting the world is?
    this is a world where lawlessness and violence are off the charts, where things are so bad in the world that everyone has had to move into giant super cities just to survive.
    In a state like that, you're going to get people who are needed to be savage and ruthless on a level that isn't seen often. Because the world is that brutal.
    Yeah, Dredd isn't the hero, he's the necessary force against a chaotic world.

      Recent two year window read to give 2000 AD a go and comic stories in general a good go.
      2000 AD comics was a mixed bag for me. Didn't take to Halo Jones, Rogue Trooper, Dante, Warlock, Slaine, Sinster Dex, Strontium Dog, Robo hunter. So I focused on trades and collections. Comic wise I would like Tyranny Rex, ABC warrors, Cannon Fodder and maybe Durham Red in a trade.
      Now for trades/hardbacks Bad Company, Kingdom, Ampney Crucis, Cabalistics Inc, Counterfeit Girl, Defoe, Grey Zone/Area, Jaegir, Skizz, Stone Island, Storming Heaven, Rose O'rion, Tales of Telugath, Zombo, Planet of Damned, Death Planet. Return to Armageddon, Zenith and anything Mega City One or cursed earth landed.
      Leatherjack, Aslyum & Benddatti Vendetta was fine.
      Aquila, Cradlegrave, Ichabod Azrael, Savage Rise of the Lions, Summer Magic: Luke Kirby, Slaine, Necronauts did not land.

      Harsh "Insurrection" with hands off "Lawless" are two sides of the law which do link up story wise and are not Dredd stories. I have fun with a lot of non Dredd stories. The problem with Dredd it's a quintenssial british idea of a future America. Americans don't see it as quintenssial American. Americans also wouldn't use the term quintenssial American. That is a very british thing to do. So Dredd is very much local to our pond. Couple of movies, one game no cartoons or shows even in Britain.

I never pass up a chance to pick em up and I love the og newspaper format if I can find em but it doesn’t change the the fact that they are old. The great thing about European and British comics.... there's so much genre, some with political agendas and some without. And in those with political agendas, there's a lot of representation from ALL political views. If you don't like one you can always search for another that suits your tastes. There's no drama and no bullshit like those from the American shores. You don't like commie comics there are plenty non-commie stuff. Europe, despite it's many left leaning culture and government, in my opinion ironically has the healthier and more sane comic industry. Yes, it's way smaller than the giants of the American comic indusry, but it have better quality.

    I entirely agree with you Judge Dredd is very much a hero. If Wagner, Mills and Grant want me to think Dredd is an evil fascist (a word that they constantly use even though I guarantee they don't know what it actually means) then they did a terrible job of it. I'm currently subscribed to the weekly 2000 AD progs and the Judge Dredd Megazine but over the past month I've been unsure whether or not I'm going to renew my subscription when it expires because a lot of the new 2000 AD writers are just left wing political commentators that use comic books to push their sociopolitical agenda and don't even come close to making Dredd (or the other characters badass) even by accident.

    I got into 2000AD recently because I love 40k and Arbites are basically Judges. Dredd and Anderson are now my favourite comicbook characters. I don't see Dredd as a hero or villain. He IS the Law and law is sometimes flawed. He is for sure a hero in Apocalypse War or Necropolis but in stories like America that deal with people wanting to come back to democracy... not so much (even for a conservative like me). I feel like the satire and deconstraction (he was always a villain type shit) angles are more prevelent in newer Dredd stories but at the same time his stories were always satirical. They were a product of their time and the zeitgeist in UK was very much Punk and anti establishment at that time I think (sorry Im from eastern Europe, I might be wrong). But Dredd is always bad ass and just fun to read. Judge Anderson is a stellar example of a great female character that is not a shitty girlbos and Arthur Ranson's art on her stories is just damn amazing.
    I would love to get some recommendations for Dredd stories that are more street level, just good old Joe blasting away creeps or hunting down a serial killer. I've been reading Essential Judge Dredd series and so far after 5 volumes it seems more focused on big epic stories like Necropolis or Apocalypse War. The beggining of Origins was awesome with rain soaked streets of MC1 and old, tired Dredd looking for a group of Muties.

      @@DzikiWaclaw the pit and mandroid i think are good street level stuff. Maybe inferno. Around prog 291 dredd hunts down a femme fatale serial killer, that’s probably in the case files 6 or 7. Anderson is the perfect example of a good female heroine. Thanks for the comment dude! 🤘🏻
