Red Skull, like many bad guys in comic book movies in general, is not fleshed out much. You get informed of abilities, some background/origin, and evil goals. And then they're defeated, possibly killed. So I think that might be why you aren't crazy about Red Skull, and some but not all future bad guys might give you the same meh feeling.
Just thought you should know that with the end credit scenes, some movies have more than one. Usually one in the middle of the credits roll and one at the very end if I recall correctly.
One of my favorite lines from the movie is when Steve says "I don't want to kill anyone. I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from." That pretty much sums up Steve's character.
Captain America is my number one. The just... pure integrity of him, determined to do the right thing regardless of the cost to himself is just... my vibe. I look forward to seeing you continue with his journey.
I love the bit that shows off both Steve & Red Skull’s characters, when Schmidt only starts to attack Steve when he shows humility (“I’m just a kid from Brooklyn”). It shows that Skull is jealous of Steve for looking like how he wants to (having the serum but keeping the blond hair and blue eyes), and furious that Steve (Skull’s “ideal man”) still shows humility
Chris Evans brought a great energy to Captain America - he's the kind of character that could have really come off cringy or infuriating. Chris pulls it off so well, and I'm thankful he accepted the role.
The casting in the MCU is phenomenal - they brought absolutely smashing performances from some unlikely places. Sarah Halley Finn is responsible for a great deal of the franchise's success.
I love how no-nonsense you are about spoilers. Every time you unexpectedly pop up with that reminder in the middle of a reaction, I have myself a good laugh and think "oh that's right, she's not messin' around". 😂

The fact that you spotted the Tesseract "peacing out" @ 38:39 gives me confidence that you will definitely catch some of those smaller details/moments that many would easily miss or not think too much of, upon a first viewing. I am thoroughly enjoying the MCU journey with you! 😁👍
Best description for Cap that I've heard is "Take every Olympic gold medalist for the body add in a chess master for the mind and an Eagle Scout for the heart. Roll them all together and that's Captain American."
This is the same serum that General Ross and Bruce Banner were attempting to replicate, only they substituted gamma rays for the "Vita-rays" that Stark used here, resulting in the Hulk :P Also, if you like the 1930s/40s/ scifi stories, check out Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, as well as The Shadow :D
Actually the shield we saw in Iron Man 2 was just an easter egg, some attempt at duplicating Cap's original shield from this movie. When the events of Iron Man 2 transpired, Steve and his shield were still frozen in the ice.
So incredible, we should see a reaction to her 2 season [18 episodes] Agent Carter series before you finish the Infinity saga. No hurry, but this movie is all of the prelude you need for viewing the show later.
Nice catch at the beginning. The town where the Tesseract was hidden was the town that the Frost Giants invaded when Odin was telling the story of Asgard at the beginning of Thor.
So in this film Steve was 5'4 and weighed 95 pounds pre-serum while post-serum he was 6'2”and weighed 220 pounds a pretty big change. They used a stand in for 5'4 Steve using CGI to place Chris Evans face over the stand in. When it cut to Steve's eyes in the pod it does give Hulk vibes. Doctor Banner was actually trying to recreate the same Super Solider serum used on Steve to create Captain America but in Banners case it failed running him into the Hulk this being the origins depicted in the MCU Hulk film. So Hulk is connected to Captain America by the Super Solider Serum and so is Tony Stark with his father working on the Super Solider project. The Hydra weapons even make the same sound effect as Iron Man's repulsors hinting at Tony using his fathers research into Hydra technology and the Tesseract. Alot of the Hydra aircrafts are actually based on prototype WW2 German blueprints that were never fully complete or just concepts from the Hydra plane at the end to the aircraft used by red skull to get away. The First Avenger has a real classic 1930s action film feel to it like the movies that inspired Indiana Jones, overall is one of the most classic comic book feeling MCU movies something I really love. Fun detail the character of Wolverine worked alongside Captain America and Jack Fury's Howling Commandos the same group you see Steve fighting beside in this film. But for legal reasons the MCU couldn't feature a cameo of Logan as Fox own the rights to the X-Men up until 2019. Marvel did try to get Hugh Jackman to cameo who has played the character since 2000 with Fox X-Men movies but that never happened. If this did happen that would mean that the Fox X-Men movies would've been apart of the MCU which would've been really cool and just like the comics shared world of X-Men, Avengers, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four etc. If this did happen we would also have a bunch of X-Men and Avengers crossover movies along with a much longer list of films to watch so for example you would've started with 2000s X-Men and worked up from then instead of Iron Man from 2008. Another change is there being no Nick Fury at this point in time who was indeed active in WW2. Revealed the he was using a serum to keep him alive for all these years which is why Nick Fury has been active since WW2 all the way up to modern times in the comics. There's also Nick Fury Jr who is the son of Nick Fury and looks like the Nick Fury we see in the MCU Samuel Jackson with the eyepatch. There's a theory going around that the Nick Fury we see in the MCU is Nick Fury Jr so in theory Nick Fury's father is the first Nick Fury who was active at the time of WW2 and maybe meet Captain American we just never saw it. Also love the fact they're using real world Captain America comics. The iconic comic of Captain America punching Hitler was Captain America Comics (1941) #1 Published in March 01, 1941. This was very daring for the time for example that would be like Marvel putting Vladimir Putin on the cover of a new Captain America cover depicting him as the bad guy. Hitler was a standing world leader with an impressive military machine behind him and had a number of sympathizers in the U.S. and this was 9 months before America joint the WW2 with the Attack on Pearl Harbor so it was very risky for Marvel at the time. Bucky Death in the Earth-616 Mainline Marvel comic: In the comic's Bucky and Steve were trying to stop Nazi agent Baron Zemo from stealing an allied prototype drone. As the plane took off they were hanging on to the outside. It exploded killing Bucky and hurling Captain America into the freezing North Atlantic. This is pretty different to his death in the MCU as not only did he die seconds before Cap feel into the water and froze but just how he died as well. Bucky in the comics is also just a young kid at around 16-years-old in 1941 while in the MCU he was 24 I believe so still pretty young guy around the same age as Steve at the time. Steve was also in ice for 20 years waking up in the 1960s instead of the early 2010s like the MCU. But yeah overall this movie does follow the comic's pretty well while of course making the origin story it's own thing. It seems like Bucky's Death and Cap being frozen are absolute points in all universe in that these events need to happen in some way regardless of the universe.
According to he Hulk movie, Banner didn't know he was working on that at all. He thought he was working on something that would provide radiation resistance. Ross said he would never had told him the truth (In the Incredible Hulk).
When Thunderbolt Ross prepped Blonsky with the last sample, you can see the Project Rebirth inventory tag initialed by Dr. A. Erskine. Compare Emil Blonsky in round 2 at Culver University to Captain America... As you can see, the hardware used by Stark was not maintained by grad students.
29:07 The shield in Iron man 2 was not the shield from this movie. It was more an Easter egg of Howard Stark having worked on the shield; and a callback to older attempts at a Captain America movie.
I never thought a Cap movie could be so perfectly made- even people I know that grew up reading comics with me and hated the character became fans after watching the movie! I've always been a big Cap fan and the movie is a favorite of mine.
I'd be one of those people. Growing up in the 70s and collecting comics during that time, there were so many other characters that I liked better than Cap. But after seeing this movie and his subsequent ones, Cap became my favorite. Evans played him perfectly and was the perfect choice. It's kinda funny that he's played 2 different super heroes in the Marvel Universe though.
Two things: 1) Although this is not my favorite MCU movie, it is my favorite reaction video from the MCU of yours (so far...). Well done. You're a fan and it shows. 2) I will abide by the PSA and not spoil anything and just say I love how you're paying attention to seemingly every little details. Again, well done.
At 25:00 or so, Steve salutes the General. That's a breach of protocol in the open in forward positions. Enemy snipers who may be observing will see who gets saluted and know that's a high-value target.
Steve Rogers was a trained artist before joining Project Rebirth. In the comics, he actually was written into a storyline working for Marvel Comics as the artist on the Captain America comic book.
This movie surprised the hell out of me. I vaguely remembered Cpt. America from a very lame 70’s tv show. But I really enjoyed this and still find it to be great even after multiple viewings. Hayley Atwell is also great as Peggy Carter. She has her own show too and it’s pretty solid.

I guess I had the advantage on you when I saw this because I didn't really know Chris Evans from anything else. So the CGI at the beginning to make him look scrawny was less noticeable as I didn't have anything to compare it against. You mention being surprised by the WWII setting. As others have mentioned, Captain America was first published in early 1941 before the USA was actually in the war. During the war, his comic sales were brisk as he was a popular hero for kids at home and stacks of the comics were shipped overseas to American troops abroad who needed some entertainment. Oh Kaiielle, I hope you like this one. As a comic book fan, I was worried, it being a period piece essentially. But they did a brilliant job of this. Still in my top 10.
Oh, in case you didn't catch it, the Tesseract was first seen in the Thor movie Easter Egg. Dr. Selvig was asked by Fury to check it out for him. So SHIELD has the Tesseract in the current timeline (at least at the end of Thor). Oh, the teaser trailer at the end of this movie is just quick little snippets of the upcoming movie. Nothing telling of the plot, just a little pinkie toe dip into the next movie. In the theater, we were screaming for more of the film, but had to wait a year...
@@kaiielle No worries! Just wanted to let you know you wouldn't hurt seeing it. It's a fun little flash of a frame here and there. And I'd recommend the Peggy Carter show. Two seasons and fleshes her out quite a bit. Fun show that put's her front and center.
I liked this movie because it followed his comic book origin nearly to the letter. I also appreciate that you kept calling Steve's friend Barnes and not by his nickname "Bucky"(short for Buchanan). Keep up the good work.

So excited you enjoyed this. I was always a big of it when it came out. Thought it was a great origin of one my favorite Marvel characters. I thought they handled Red Skull pretty good. They just didn't do a great job making Red Skull and Cap have a deeper connection. He was just a bad guy that he had to stop and that's it.
Rogers' coming out of the shell, is the first time Hayley Atwell sees him in all his glory. She has admitted to having a bit of a crush and the moment got the best of her and she touched him on instinct. They decided to leave it in.
Just in case you're interested in a bit of background on the character of Captain America in the comics...Captain America was originally created during World War II by the creative team of Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. In the movie they showed kids reading a comic which has the original cover of the actual first issue - with Captain America punching Hitler in the jaw. Publication of Captain America stopped sometime in the 50's, I believe. The comic book "Marvel Universe" started in the early 60's with the publication of The Fantastic Four, helmed primarily by writer/editor Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby (who co-created Captain America back in the 40's). Marvel kept adding new super-hero titles and they decided to bring back Captain America. So, they came up with a story where the Avengers find a man frozen in a block of ice floating in the ocean. It turns out to be Captain America who had been frozen since the end of World War II. I think the movie did a good job incorporating all of that background of the character into the story. Another fun nod to the original comics - at about 4:49 at the World's Fair we see a human figure contained in a glass container. That is The Human Torch. At around the same time that the original Captain America comics were being published, they also had a popular character called the Human Torch who was an android that would burst into flame when he came into contact with oxygen (thus the glass container). In the 1960's, just like with the Captain America character, they (kind of) decided to bring back the Human Torch. But this time he was a human not an android and they made him a member of the Fantastic Four. And in the Fantastic Four movie from 2005 (not part of the MCU) the part of the Human Torch was played by...Chris Evans!

Awesome reaction, I'm loving going back to the MCU with you. I just think about how the heroes weapons in the MCU are not just weapons, but also can be used as protection or to build. Iron man's armor protects Tony's body from external harm, but also stops the shrapnel to get into his heart. Thor's Mjolnir can be used to rebuild, and Captain America's shield literally is designed for protection, rather than a weapon to destroy or to kill. It reflects the nature of a hero, it has to serve and protect more than destroy and intimidate.
I enjoyed Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, but admittedly the character is kind of a one note villain archetype. Just kind of your run of the mill classic megalomaniac antagonist sort of deal.
True. I still think he did a great job with the script. Hugo is a bit underrated imo. He usually plays secondary roles, mostly vilains. And one of the only movies he plays the main role, you don't even see his face. But most movies he's in became instant classics. Some thanks also for his acting.
Bucky was definitely one of my favorite characters it was so sad to see him go. This was a great movie in my opinion, I agree that there was something with the villain that didn't add up.
Holy Hannah! Totally agree with you about the Red Skull! The Red Skull, in the traditional books about Captain America, their history is so intense and so awesome! He's not only his first villain but his worst, in my opinion.
I grew up reading Captain America and the Avengers comics and this one did a great job of feeling like a comic book adventure without being too comic book like. If that make sense.
First introduction to this channel. Took a peek at some other reactions you have done and noticed Before Sunrise. Given you had mentioned your love for Chris Evans an underrated movie of his is actually Before We Go which is a very similar though far more realistic and honestly down to earth view on it. Also Snowpiercer is a good movie as well and I think Chris' acting chops really really come out in it.
In the recovery room, the female SHIELD Agent called a Code 13. Agent 13 was the callsign of the woman who worked with Rogers after he was revived in the comics. In the true history of Timely Comics, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created the character before the US was in the war. When the first cover showed him belting Hitler, Nazis actually surrounded the offices and the police had to create a human blockade to keep them out. When Kirby heard about the mob outside, he started rolling his sleeves up and was going downstairs to take them on. (Along with his tremendous talent in art, he was a boxer.) Cooler heads kept him inside before a brawl could start. Stan Lee at the time was an office boy doing errands like refilling the inkwells for the bullpen. The first work he did for Cap was to write a story which included the first time that Cap did a shield rebound attack. Stan did serve in the Army as did many others in the comics industry. Stan stayed with Timely Comics, later rebranded as Atlas Comics, then finally rebranded as Marvel Comics in the 60's during the new Silver Age of Comics. When Stan and Jack decided to revive the character in the Silver Age, he was found in the ice by the Avengers and became the last of the Founding Avengers. Stan wrote the tale of how Steve and Bucky were lost in action. Jack Kirby once again brought the character alive on the page.

Hey Kaiielle, another great reaction. I'm glad you enjoyed this. I've been noticing that you are really getting into the characters of the MCU more and more. This seems to happen a lot with viewers. I think, to me, it shows how well written they are. Now that you have been formally introduced to the tesseract, a bit of history of it in the MCU so far. I see that you already know it was at the end of Thor, but it was the item used by the Frost Giants to get to Earth about 1000 years ago. After Odin defeated them, he entrusted it to the humans to hide it,which is why it was still in Norway at the beginning of the movie. Also in Ironman 2, when Tony was reading his father's journal, there was a picture drawn of a cube inside of a cube. In real life physicists say that a cube in the 4th dimension would leve a shadow of the picture drawn in 3D. They call it a Tesseract. This is to show that Howard had the Tesseract, and the Arc Reactor was derived from it. This is why Red Skulls weapons sounded the same as Ironman. Way too long of an explanation for a small easter egg, but it shows the attention to detail that the MCU does. Little fun trivia. The scene were Steve stepped out of the Machine totally jacked was the first time Haley Atwell saw him with naked chest and her stunned reaction was not acted at all acording to herself in an interview.
I like how the first movie so far for each character, the hero was pitted against a counterpart... Tony vs Obie [armored hero against armored villain] Hulk vs Abomination [monster against monster] Thor vs Loki [brother against brother] Cap vs Red Skull [Erskine's last creation against his first] If you recall, The Tesseract was introduced in the post credit scene for Thor... "What is it?" "Power Doctor... Maybe unlimited power." Cheers!
Captain America is definitely one of my TOP 3 favorite MCU characters, right there with Iron Man and Thor. His future movies take on a lot different feeling- they're a lot less "fantastical" and a lot more grounded and dark even, and they're some of the best MCU movies period. Steve has a moral spine of high carbon steel and will fight with every ounce of strength for what he believes is right, even if it kills him. You can't help but root for him, especially knowing his beginnings and how the super soldier serum amplifies one's character so much- MCU Hulk is a result of a variant of the serum after all... Now all that's left of Phase One is the first Avengers movie and I can't wait to see you react to how it all comes together! The hype is real! 😁
Red Skull's comment about the Fuhrer "digging in the desert" is a reference to "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", as is the flying wing airplane and N@zi in the propeller stunt.

Here we are again, with the while-watching-the-video comments! 😄 - Little fun fact: this isn't Chris Evans' first rodeo as a Marvel character, he played Johnny Storm/Human Torch on the first two Fantastic Four movies. These movies are not part of the MCU, and really are not that great, but are not that bad either. Forget the third movie, the reboot one, it's a bomb. When the first two movies were made the Fantastic Four were still one of the best selling titles by Marvel Comics, and are called Marvel's First Family for that reason. The movie rights for them finally went back to Marvel Studios some years ago, and the Fantastic Four should enter the MCU on -Phase 5 if memory serves me right- Phase 6 actually, we old comics fans are hyped to see them finally being depicted properly on the big screen. 🙂 - At the scene where Steve Rogers is injected the Super Soldier serum, that reaction of Peggy Carter (played by the incredible Hayley Atwell) where she tries to touch him was completely off-script. She said in interviews later it was just instinctive because, let us be honest, Chris Evans physical shape is rather impressive. 😅 - In Iron Man 2 we saw either a mock up or a prototype of Captain America's shield, because the final one was with Steve when he was found at the beginning of the movie. - I am DYING to make a last comment about your last comments, but even an oblique one will be spoilery, so I'll just shut my mouth. 🤐 - Captain America was created back in the 1940s as a way to collect funds for the war effort, all those scenes of Steve doing that in the movie were a nod to that. At the time Marvel even had another name, Timely Comics. It only became Marvel Comics in the 1960s. The next movie is the last one of Phase One of the MCU, The Avengers. Earth's Mightiest Heroes, all together for the first time. Can't wait until next Monday. 🙂
My favorite of all the single hero movies. What makes Steve different that the heroes before him is he is just a guy who wants to do the right thing. He isn’t a billionaire with A-list celebrity status and suave like Tony trying to make up for past sins. He isn’t a groundbreaking intellect like Bruce cursed with an alter ego. He isn’t a literal god of legend like Thor. And he isn’t a covert assassin like Nat. He just wants to do his part in the war because he wants to help others he has a humility to him even after getting his powers he only still sees himself as ‘just a kid from Brooklyn’. He may he weak physically but he is strong in character due to his integrity. Pretty straight forward plot right up to Steve choosing to make the sacrifice play to save the world only to wake up almost a century later realizing the life as he knew it is gone. Steve fought and sacrificed for everything he valued he just never expected to live without it.
I initaly scoffed at Chris Evans playing Steve Rodgers because he had played Human Torch in the F4 movies. So the fact that he went from the world's biggest lecher to the world's biggest boy scout REALLY impressed me.
Just a few words on Stan Lee... Having grown up reading Marvel comic books in the 70's and 80's, I know who Stan Lee was and I'm glad he got so much recognition being part of all the MCU movies. But I'm also curious what people that are not as familiar with comics know about him. I think some people think he drew the original comics (he didn't - he was a writer not an artist) or even that he "owns Marvel" (he doesn't), etc. Stan Lee was the head writer and editor at Marvel Comics during the early days in the early 60's when most of the iconic Marvel characters were created. And so he co-created most of those characters. The way that they worked back then, Stan Lee would give a very brief outline of a story (maybe just a paragraph or two, or just a short phone conversation) to the artist and the artist would then draw the whole story, figuring out the pacing and making it visually interesting, and then Lee would get the pages back and he would add the dialogue. This way of working came to be known as "The Marvel Method". And the main artist at Marvel at that time was a guy named Jack Kirby. Kirby is acknowledged as a great artist and a visionary and one of the true giants in the history of the comics industry, with a career spanning from the 30's all the way until the 80's. Among Kirby's accomplishments he co-created Captain America during World War II, co-created most of the Marvel universe, went over to DC comics and created the whole New Gods/Darkseid mythology, then went back to Marvel and created the whole Eternals/Celestials mythology. There is ongoing debate over whether Lee or Kirby should get more of the credit for creating the Marvel universe. Kirby passed away in 1994 before seeing the popularity and success of the MCU. In 2009 members of the Kirby family tried to claim ownership of many of the Marvel characters. Marvel and the Kirby estate settled in 2014 (monetary compensation was involved but the amount is not publicly known) and now Kirby is officially credited as "co-creator" of many of the Marvel characters.
Once again another great reaction and cap is my favorite out of the avengers. Can't wait till u watch the avengers and the second captain America film 😏
Since you had seen Iron Man 2, I wanted to let you know a change made in the comic cover. In Howard's briefcase was the same comic with the original cover showing Bucky in the foreground in a salute as the teen mascot. In this movie, Bucky was edited out because Bucky was already a full-grown friend of Steve, a sergeant in the US Army.
If you liked Haley Atwell, aka Agent Carter, I would recommend the series. You may also want to consider watching Agents of Shield, starting right after Iron Man 3, which is where the story picks up. The series plays into and off of the movies through the first few seasons, thankfully there are watch list guides online, so you don't fall behind or jump ahead, in case you had any interest.
I think the response Steve gives about not liking bullies really incapsulates why I think many people join an armed service; US, UK, CAN, AUS, etc. It did for me - I hate bullies. It was the perfect answer and Chris Evans was perfect for this role.
What you saw in Iron Man 2 was not Capn's shield it was a piece of plastic from the Stark Expo model made in 1974 that was inspired by Capn's shield. That was why it crumpled under the weight of the accelerator tubes. If it was his actual shield it would not have been crushed because it is made of vibranium.
I've been waiting for your reaction to this movie and really excited to see your reaction to the character dynamics in the next movie. This reaction didn't disappoint! I enjoyed your fangirling and the way you reacted when Peggy touched Steve's chest. Absolutely priceless! What really caught me off guard was your endorsement of short men and tall women in relationships together because I'm a short guy like Steve and have about the same amount of luck as he does pre-serum. It was kind of hot to hear that, as weird as that sounds, instead of the usual degrading commentary about that relationship dynamic. Avengers coming next Monday (19)! Then taking a break and picking up Phase Two in January. Shorter men are (generally) nicer. We stan the short kings over here. Height is not something anyone has control over, so why bully people about that.

Also, if it weren't for the simple fact that Fox owned the rights to the XMen and the Fantastic Four, Cap's shield would have been made of adamanteum (the world's strongest metal), vibraneum (the best metal for absorbing energy and sound and repelling it. Giving the shield the ability to bounce back. ) and a third unknown element. Making the shield an incredible weapon against HYDRA and the villains Captain America would face before his long sleep. But unfortunately, because of the liberties and lack of said rights, we were limited to watching a movie about the most dangerous Avenger in a very short back story. A story that still works (and I'm happy with the outcome, being a huge fan of the character). I can understand why we're treated with this story. Thanks for watching and reacting to the MCU. Trust your followers and fans, like myself. You won't regret this journey. Totally worth it!
Easy to miss, but this isn't the first time we see the Tesseract in the MCU. The post-credit scene in Thor where the older scientist was brought in to look at something? That was what he was brought in for

Great Reaction again @kaiielle. I'm almost caught up in your MCU viewings. A few things if someone hasn't mentioned it yet... 1) In the scene you said was one of your favorites, the one where Steve throws himself on the grenade when everyone runs. Its not quite true. If you go back and view it, there is one other person who runs towards the grenade - Agent Carter. She's a great character in this movie for sure. 2) Howard Stark. When he has his inventions or he's tinkering and things blow up. Kinda reminds me of another Stark who tinkers and blows things up ... and oh yeah, is kinda a womanizer. 3) I don't actually have an item #3 .... but its not a proper list without at least 3 items. :)
Another great reaction to another great movie! I saw this on the big screen way back when, at that point I wasn’t the Marvel/MCU fan that I am now. The biggest draw for me was Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Phillips, he is one of my favorite actors. When you need a no nonsense authority figure that can sling sarcastic one liners with the best of them, you cast Tommy Lee Jones. “ I’m not kissing you!”

Red Skull, like many bad guys in comic book movies in general, is not fleshed out much. You get informed of abilities, some background/origin, and evil goals. And then they're defeated, possibly killed. So I think that might be why you aren't crazy about Red Skull, and some but not all future bad guys might give you the same meh feeling.
Just thought you should know that with the end credit scenes, some movies have more than one. Usually one in the middle of the credits roll and one at the very end if I recall correctly.

One of my favorite lines from the movie is when Steve says "I don't want to kill anyone. I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from." That pretty much sums up Steve's character.

I love the bit that shows off both Steve & Red Skull’s characters, when Schmidt only starts to attack Steve when he shows humility (“I’m just a kid from Brooklyn”). It shows that Skull is jealous of Steve for looking like how he wants to (having the serum but keeping the blond hair and blue eyes), and furious that Steve (Skull’s “ideal man”) still shows humility

Chris Evans brought a great energy to Captain America - he's the kind of character that could have really come off cringy or infuriating.
Chris pulls it off so well, and I'm thankful he accepted the role.

Yah, I have to admit, I wasn't so sure about Chris in this role. That is until I saw the movie. Now I can't picture anyone else.
The casting in the MCU is phenomenal - they brought absolutely smashing performances from some unlikely places. Sarah Halley Finn is responsible for a great deal of the franchise's success.
I like Iron Man, but this was the movie that really brought me into the MCU. To me, this is really the cornerstone to all of the Avenger movies.
Steve and Tony are kinda the cornerstones of all Phase 1-3 I think.
Yet Captain Marvel is what really started it all for Nick.

Best description for Cap that I've heard is "Take every Olympic gold medalist for the body add in a chess master for the mind and an Eagle Scout for the heart. Roll them all together and that's Captain American."
This is the same serum that General Ross and Bruce Banner were attempting to replicate, only they substituted gamma rays for the "Vita-rays" that Stark used here, resulting in the Hulk :P

Actually the shield we saw in Iron Man 2 was just an easter egg, some attempt at duplicating Cap's original shield from this movie. When the events of Iron Man 2 transpired, Steve and his shield were still frozen in the ice.
At this point in the MCU, Iron Man was my favorite movie, but Captain America was my favorite character.

So incredible, we should see a reaction to her 2 season [18 episodes] Agent Carter series before you finish the Infinity saga. No hurry, but this movie is all of the prelude you need for viewing the show later.
Nice catch at the beginning. The town where the Tesseract was hidden was the town that the Frost Giants invaded when Odin was telling the story of Asgard at the beginning of Thor.
So in this film Steve was 5'4 and weighed 95 pounds pre-serum while post-serum he was 6'2”and weighed 220 pounds a pretty big change. They used a stand in for 5'4 Steve using CGI to place Chris Evans face over the stand in.
When it cut to Steve's eyes in the pod it does give Hulk vibes. Doctor Banner was actually trying to recreate the same Super Solider serum used on Steve to create Captain America but in Banners case it failed running him into the Hulk this being the origins depicted in the MCU Hulk film. So Hulk is connected to Captain America by the Super Solider Serum and so is Tony Stark with his father working on the Super Solider project. The Hydra weapons even make the same sound effect as Iron Man's repulsors hinting at Tony using his fathers research into Hydra technology and the Tesseract.
Alot of the Hydra aircrafts are actually based on prototype WW2 German blueprints that were never fully complete or just concepts from the Hydra plane at the end to the aircraft used by red skull to get away.
The First Avenger has a real classic 1930s action film feel to it like the movies that inspired Indiana Jones, overall is one of the most classic comic book feeling MCU movies something I really love. Fun detail the character of Wolverine worked alongside Captain America and Jack Fury's Howling Commandos the same group you see Steve fighting beside in this film. But for legal reasons the MCU couldn't feature a cameo of Logan as Fox own the rights to the X-Men up until 2019.
Marvel did try to get Hugh Jackman to cameo who has played the character since 2000 with Fox X-Men movies but that never happened. If this did happen that would mean that the Fox X-Men movies would've been apart of the MCU which would've been really cool and just like the comics shared world of X-Men, Avengers, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four etc. If this did happen we would also have a bunch of X-Men and Avengers crossover movies along with a much longer list of films to watch so for example you would've started with 2000s X-Men and worked up from then instead of Iron Man from 2008.
Another change is there being no Nick Fury at this point in time who was indeed active in WW2. Revealed the he was using a serum to keep him alive for all these years which is why Nick Fury has been active since WW2 all the way up to modern times in the comics. There's also Nick Fury Jr who is the son of Nick Fury and looks like the Nick Fury we see in the MCU Samuel Jackson with the eyepatch. There's a theory going around that the Nick Fury we see in the MCU is Nick Fury Jr so in theory Nick Fury's father is the first Nick Fury who was active at the time of WW2 and maybe meet Captain American we just never saw it.
Also love the fact they're using real world Captain America comics. The iconic comic of Captain America punching Hitler was Captain America Comics (1941) #1 Published in March 01, 1941. This was very daring for the time for example that would be like Marvel putting Vladimir Putin on the cover of a new Captain America cover depicting him as the bad guy. Hitler was a standing world leader with an impressive military machine behind him and had a number of sympathizers in the U.S. and this was 9 months before America joint the WW2 with the Attack on Pearl Harbor so it was very risky for Marvel at the time.
Bucky Death in the Earth-616 Mainline Marvel comic:
In the comic's Bucky and Steve were trying to stop Nazi agent Baron Zemo from stealing an allied prototype drone. As the plane took off they were hanging on to the outside. It exploded killing Bucky and hurling Captain America into the freezing North Atlantic.
This is pretty different to his death in the MCU as not only did he die seconds before Cap feel into the water and froze but just how he died as well. Bucky in the comics is also just a young kid at around 16-years-old in 1941 while in the MCU he was 24 I believe so still pretty young guy around the same age as Steve at the time. Steve was also in ice for 20 years waking up in the 1960s instead of the early 2010s like the MCU.
But yeah overall this movie does follow the comic's pretty well while of course making the origin story it's own thing. It seems like Bucky's Death and Cap being frozen are absolute points in all universe in that these events need to happen in some way regardless of the universe.
According to he Hulk movie, Banner didn't know he was working on that at all. He thought he was working on something that would provide radiation resistance. Ross said he would never had told him the truth (In the Incredible Hulk).
When Thunderbolt Ross prepped Blonsky with the last sample, you can see the Project Rebirth inventory tag initialed by Dr. A. Erskine. Compare Emil Blonsky in round 2 at Culver University to Captain America...
As you can see, the hardware used by Stark was not maintained by grad students.
29:07 The shield in Iron man 2 was not the shield from this movie. It was more an Easter egg of Howard Stark having worked on the shield; and a callback to older attempts at a Captain America movie.
I like it think it was a prototype of an attempt to replicate the vibranium shield. Stark's shield looked like it was in pieces, as rings and slats.

I never thought a Cap movie could be so perfectly made- even people I know that grew up reading comics with me and hated the character became fans after watching the movie!
I've always been a big Cap fan and the movie is a favorite of mine.
I'd be one of those people. Growing up in the 70s and collecting comics during that time, there were so many other characters that I liked better than Cap. But after seeing this movie and his subsequent ones, Cap became my favorite. Evans played him perfectly and was the perfect choice. It's kinda funny that he's played 2 different super heroes in the Marvel Universe though.
Two things: 1) Although this is not my favorite MCU movie, it is my favorite reaction video from the MCU of yours (so far...). Well done. You're a fan and it shows. 2) I will abide by the PSA and not spoil anything and just say I love how you're paying attention to seemingly every little details. Again, well done.

At 25:00 or so, Steve salutes the General. That's a breach of protocol in the open in forward positions. Enemy snipers who may be observing will see who gets saluted and know that's a high-value target.

Steve Rogers was a trained artist before joining Project Rebirth. In the comics, he actually was written into a storyline working for Marvel Comics as the artist on the Captain America comic book.

I guess I had the advantage on you when I saw this because I didn't really know Chris Evans from anything else. So the CGI at the beginning to make him look scrawny was less noticeable as I didn't have anything to compare it against.
You mention being surprised by the WWII setting. As others have mentioned, Captain America was first published in early 1941 before the USA was actually in the war. During the war, his comic sales were brisk as he was a popular hero for kids at home and stacks of the comics were shipped overseas to American troops abroad who needed some entertainment.

Oh Kaiielle, I hope you like this one. As a comic book fan, I was worried, it being a period piece essentially. But they did a brilliant job of this. Still in my top 10.
Oh, in case you didn't catch it, the Tesseract was first seen in the Thor movie Easter Egg. Dr. Selvig was asked by Fury to check it out for him. So SHIELD has the Tesseract in the current timeline (at least at the end of Thor). Oh, the teaser trailer at the end of this movie is just quick little snippets of the upcoming movie. Nothing telling of the plot, just a little pinkie toe dip into the next movie. In the theater, we were screaming for more of the film, but had to wait a year...
Yep, I connected the dots on the Tesseract. Very cool! And yeah, I won't be watching the teaser trailer. I am avoiding them for this franchise.

So excited you enjoyed this. I was always a big of it when it came out. Thought it was a great origin of one my favorite Marvel characters. I thought they handled Red Skull pretty good. They just didn't do a great job making Red Skull and Cap have a deeper connection. He was just a bad guy that he had to stop and that's it.
Rogers' coming out of the shell, is the first time Hayley Atwell sees him in all his glory. She has admitted to having a bit of a crush and the moment got the best of her and she touched him on instinct.
They decided to leave it in.
Just in case you're interested in a bit of background on the character of Captain America in the comics...Captain America was originally created during World War II by the creative team of Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. In the movie they showed kids reading a comic which has the original cover of the actual first issue - with Captain America punching Hitler in the jaw. Publication of Captain America stopped sometime in the 50's, I believe. The comic book "Marvel Universe" started in the early 60's with the publication of The Fantastic Four, helmed primarily by writer/editor Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby (who co-created Captain America back in the 40's). Marvel kept adding new super-hero titles and they decided to bring back Captain America. So, they came up with a story where the Avengers find a man frozen in a block of ice floating in the ocean. It turns out to be Captain America who had been frozen since the end of World War II.
I think the movie did a good job incorporating all of that background of the character into the story.
Another fun nod to the original comics - at about 4:49 at the World's Fair we see a human figure contained in a glass container. That is The Human Torch. At around the same time that the original Captain America comics were being published, they also had a popular character called the Human Torch who was an android that would burst into flame when he came into contact with oxygen (thus the glass container). In the 1960's, just like with the Captain America character, they (kind of) decided to bring back the Human Torch. But this time he was a human not an android and they made him a member of the Fantastic Four. And in the Fantastic Four movie from 2005 (not part of the MCU) the part of the Human Torch was played by...Chris Evans!

I just think about how the heroes weapons in the MCU are not just weapons, but also can be used as protection or to build.
Iron man's armor protects Tony's body from external harm, but also stops the shrapnel to get into his heart.
Thor's Mjolnir can be used to rebuild, and Captain America's shield literally is designed for protection, rather than a weapon to destroy or to kill.
It reflects the nature of a hero, it has to serve and protect more than destroy and intimidate.

I enjoyed Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, but admittedly the character is kind of a one note villain archetype. Just kind of your run of the mill classic megalomaniac antagonist sort of deal.

True. I still think he did a great job with the script. Hugo is a bit underrated imo. He usually plays secondary roles, mostly vilains. And one of the only movies he plays the main role, you don't even see his face. But most movies he's in became instant classics. Some thanks also for his acting.

Bucky was definitely one of my favorite characters it was so sad to see him go. This was a great movie in my opinion, I agree that there was something with the villain that didn't add up.
Holy Hannah! Totally agree with you about the Red Skull! The Red Skull, in the traditional books about Captain America, their history is so intense and so awesome! He's not only his first villain but his worst, in my opinion.
I grew up reading Captain America and the Avengers comics and this one did a great job of feeling like a comic book adventure without being too comic book like. If that make sense.

First introduction to this channel. Took a peek at some other reactions you have done and noticed Before Sunrise. Given you had mentioned your love for Chris Evans an underrated movie of his is actually Before We Go which is a very similar though far more realistic and honestly down to earth view on it.
Also Snowpiercer is a good movie as well and I think Chris' acting chops really really come out in it.
In the recovery room, the female SHIELD Agent called a Code 13. Agent 13 was the callsign of the woman who worked with Rogers after he was revived in the comics.
In the true history of Timely Comics, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created the character before the US was in the war. When the first cover showed him belting Hitler, Nazis actually surrounded the offices and the police had to create a human blockade to keep them out. When Kirby heard about the mob outside, he started rolling his sleeves up and was going downstairs to take them on. (Along with his tremendous talent in art, he was a boxer.) Cooler heads kept him inside before a brawl could start.
Stan Lee at the time was an office boy doing errands like refilling the inkwells for the bullpen. The first work he did for Cap was to write a story which included the first time that Cap did a shield rebound attack. Stan did serve in the Army as did many others in the comics industry. Stan stayed with Timely Comics, later rebranded as Atlas Comics, then finally rebranded as Marvel Comics in the 60's during the new Silver Age of Comics.
When Stan and Jack decided to revive the character in the Silver Age, he was found in the ice by the Avengers and became the last of the Founding Avengers. Stan wrote the tale of how Steve and Bucky were lost in action. Jack Kirby once again brought the character alive on the page.

Hey Kaiielle, another great reaction. I'm glad you enjoyed this. I've been noticing that you are really getting into the characters of the MCU more and more. This seems to happen a lot with viewers. I think, to me, it shows how well written they are.
Now that you have been formally introduced to the tesseract, a bit of history of it in the MCU so far.
I see that you already know it was at the end of Thor, but it was the item used by the Frost Giants to get to Earth about 1000 years ago. After Odin defeated them, he entrusted it to the humans to hide it,which is why it was still in Norway at the beginning of the movie.
Also in Ironman 2, when Tony was reading his father's journal, there was a picture drawn of a cube inside of a cube. In real life physicists say that a cube in the 4th dimension would leve a shadow of the picture drawn in 3D. They call it a Tesseract. This is to show that Howard had the Tesseract, and the Arc Reactor was derived from it. This is why Red Skulls weapons sounded the same as Ironman.
Way too long of an explanation for a small easter egg, but it shows the attention to detail that the MCU does.

As a comic book fan I was extremely nervous about this movie, and as a comic book fan was 100% happy with every aspect of how they pulled it off.
Captain America is definitely one of my TOP 3 favorite MCU characters, right there with Iron Man and Thor.
His future movies take on a lot different feeling- they're a lot less "fantastical" and a lot more grounded and dark even, and they're some of the best MCU movies period.
Steve has a moral spine of high carbon steel and will fight with every ounce of strength for what he believes is right, even if it kills him.
You can't help but root for him, especially knowing his beginnings and how the super soldier serum amplifies one's character so much- MCU Hulk is a result of a variant of the serum after all...
Now all that's left of Phase One is the first Avengers movie and I can't wait to see you react to how it all comes together! The hype is real! 😁
Red Skull's comment about the Fuhrer "digging in the desert" is a reference to "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", as is the flying wing airplane and N@zi in the propeller stunt.

- Little fun fact: this isn't Chris Evans' first rodeo as a Marvel character, he played Johnny Storm/Human Torch on the first two Fantastic Four movies. These movies are not part of the MCU, and really are not that great, but are not that bad either. Forget the third movie, the reboot one, it's a bomb. When the first two movies were made the Fantastic Four were still one of the best selling titles by Marvel Comics, and are called Marvel's First Family for that reason. The movie rights for them finally went back to Marvel Studios some years ago, and the Fantastic Four should enter the MCU on -Phase 5 if memory serves me right- Phase 6 actually, we old comics fans are hyped to see them finally being depicted properly on the big screen. 🙂
- At the scene where Steve Rogers is injected the Super Soldier serum, that reaction of Peggy Carter (played by the incredible Hayley Atwell) where she tries to touch him was completely off-script. She said in interviews later it was just instinctive because, let us be honest, Chris Evans physical shape is rather impressive. 😅
- In Iron Man 2 we saw either a mock up or a prototype of Captain America's shield, because the final one was with Steve when he was found at the beginning of the movie.
- I am DYING to make a last comment about your last comments, but even an oblique one will be spoilery, so I'll just shut my mouth. 🤐
- Captain America was created back in the 1940s as a way to collect funds for the war effort, all those scenes of Steve doing that in the movie were a nod to that. At the time Marvel even had another name, Timely Comics. It only became Marvel Comics in the 1960s.
The next movie is the last one of Phase One of the MCU, The Avengers. Earth's Mightiest Heroes, all together for the first time. Can't wait until next Monday. 🙂
My favorite of all the single hero movies. What makes Steve different that the heroes before him is he is just a guy who wants to do the right thing. He isn’t a billionaire with A-list celebrity status and suave like Tony trying to make up for past sins. He isn’t a groundbreaking intellect like Bruce cursed with an alter ego. He isn’t a literal god of legend like Thor. And he isn’t a covert assassin like Nat. He just wants to do his part in the war because he wants to help others he has a humility to him even after getting his powers he only still sees himself as ‘just a kid from Brooklyn’. He may he weak physically but he is strong in character due to his integrity. Pretty straight forward plot right up to Steve choosing to make the sacrifice play to save the world only to wake up almost a century later realizing the life as he knew it is gone. Steve fought and sacrificed for everything he valued he just never expected to live without it.

I like how the black & white movies that Cap was making are echoed in the later actions of him and the Howling Commandos.
I initaly scoffed at Chris Evans playing Steve Rodgers because he had played Human Torch in the F4 movies. So the fact that he went from the world's biggest lecher to the world's biggest boy scout REALLY impressed me.
He's good in serious roles! I really like him in Sunshine.

For me, this is the "heart" of MCU Phase 1. Steve IS the heart of the Avengers.
Just a few words on Stan Lee...
Having grown up reading Marvel comic books in the 70's and 80's, I know who Stan Lee was and I'm glad he got so much recognition being part of all the MCU movies. But I'm also curious what people that are not as familiar with comics know about him. I think some people think he drew the original comics (he didn't - he was a writer not an artist) or even that he "owns Marvel" (he doesn't), etc.
Stan Lee was the head writer and editor at Marvel Comics during the early days in the early 60's when most of the iconic Marvel characters were created. And so he co-created most of those characters. The way that they worked back then, Stan Lee would give a very brief outline of a story (maybe just a paragraph or two, or just a short phone conversation) to the artist and the artist would then draw the whole story, figuring out the pacing and making it visually interesting, and then Lee would get the pages back and he would add the dialogue. This way of working came to be known as "The Marvel Method". And the main artist at Marvel at that time was a guy named Jack Kirby. Kirby is acknowledged as a great artist and a visionary and one of the true giants in the history of the comics industry, with a career spanning from the 30's all the way until the 80's. Among Kirby's accomplishments he co-created Captain America during World War II, co-created most of the Marvel universe, went over to DC comics and created the whole New Gods/Darkseid mythology, then went back to Marvel and created the whole Eternals/Celestials mythology.
There is ongoing debate over whether Lee or Kirby should get more of the credit for creating the Marvel universe. Kirby passed away in 1994 before seeing the popularity and success of the MCU. In 2009 members of the Kirby family tried to claim ownership of many of the Marvel characters. Marvel and the Kirby estate settled in 2014 (monetary compensation was involved but the amount is not publicly known) and now Kirby is officially credited as "co-creator" of many of the Marvel characters.

The shield seen in Iron Man 2 was a different prototype shield mockup, as the iconic shield you see in this movie was with Steve the entire time.
Since you had seen Iron Man 2, I wanted to let you know a change made in the comic cover. In Howard's briefcase was the same comic with the original cover showing Bucky in the foreground in a salute as the teen mascot. In this movie, Bucky was edited out because Bucky was already a full-grown friend of Steve, a sergeant in the US Army.
It came in 3D at IMAX. WOW...
It's funny because her touching his chest wasn't in the script lol she said in an interview that she just couldn't resist 😂
If you liked Haley Atwell, aka Agent Carter, I would recommend the series. You may also want to consider watching Agents of Shield, starting right after Iron Man 3, which is where the story picks up. The series plays into and off of the movies through the first few seasons, thankfully there are watch list guides online, so you don't fall behind or jump ahead, in case you had any interest.
I think the response Steve gives about not liking bullies really incapsulates why I think many people join an armed service; US, UK, CAN, AUS, etc. It did for me - I hate bullies.
It was the perfect answer and Chris Evans was perfect for this role.
if you're feeling the need for more agent carter, she did get her own short-lived tv show.
What you saw in Iron Man 2 was not Capn's shield it was a piece of plastic from the Stark Expo model made in 1974 that was inspired by Capn's shield. That was why it crumpled under the weight of the accelerator tubes. If it was his actual shield it would not have been crushed because it is made of vibranium.
Have you seen Scott pilgrim vs the world, because Chris Evans is in it as an actor/ skateboarder.

What really caught me off guard was your endorsement of short men and tall women in relationships together because I'm a short guy like Steve and have about the same amount of luck as he does pre-serum. It was kind of hot to hear that, as weird as that sounds, instead of the usual degrading commentary about that relationship dynamic.

Also, if it weren't for the simple fact that Fox owned the rights to the XMen and the Fantastic Four, Cap's shield would have been made of adamanteum (the world's strongest metal), vibraneum (the best metal for absorbing energy and sound and repelling it. Giving the shield the ability to bounce back. ) and a third unknown element. Making the shield an incredible weapon against HYDRA and the villains Captain America would face before his long sleep. But unfortunately, because of the liberties and lack of said rights, we were limited to watching a movie about the most dangerous Avenger in a very short back story. A story that still works (and I'm happy with the outcome, being a huge fan of the character). I can understand why we're treated with this story. Thanks for watching and reacting to the MCU. Trust your followers and fans, like myself. You won't regret this journey. Totally worth it!
Easy to miss, but this isn't the first time we see the Tesseract in the MCU. The post-credit scene in Thor where the older scientist was brought in to look at something? That was what he was brought in for

I've seen this film a few times and not noticed before: @15:32 The nazi arguing with Red Skull is played by Anatole Taubman, who portrays a memorable - and VERY different - character in Band of Brothers ep 9.

Great Reaction again @kaiielle. I'm almost caught up in your MCU viewings. A few things if someone hasn't mentioned it yet...
1) In the scene you said was one of your favorites, the one where Steve throws himself on the grenade when everyone runs. Its not quite true. If you go back and view it, there is one other person who runs towards the grenade - Agent Carter. She's a great character in this movie for sure.
2) Howard Stark. When he has his inventions or he's tinkering and things blow up. Kinda reminds me of another Stark who tinkers and blows things up ... and oh yeah, is kinda a womanizer.
3) I don't actually have an item #3 .... but its not a proper list without at least 3 items.

I saw this on the big screen way back when, at that point I wasn’t the Marvel/MCU fan that I am now. The biggest draw for me was Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Phillips, he is one of my favorite actors. When you need a no nonsense authority figure that can sling sarcastic one liners with the best of them, you cast Tommy Lee Jones. “ I’m not kissing you!”
