This programme takes a look back at the popular class 50s hard at work on the Western Region of British Rail throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Their impressive large-logo livery and the heavy beat of their 2700hp English electric 16CSVT engine made them popular with enthusiasts. We take a step back in time to review the heyday of the class from the Cornish mainline to Network Southeast's commuter trains, to Speedlink freight and heavy holiday expresses to the Westcountry.
50050, 50033 and 50007 on the 'Cornish Caper' railtour, 50016 under the long-gone semaphore signals at Newquay, 50055 at St.Austell on Speedlink freight, 50040 filmed from Burngullow Signalbox, 50047 heading West out of St.Austell and 50019 at Par.
A focus on the Devon main line to Exeter with 50049 on West Coast Mk3 stock at Newton Abbot, 50031 storming up Hemerdon, 50011 at Exeter, 50023 + 034 double-head bound for Paignton.
Three class 50s in convoy, 50012 at Cheltenham, 50023 departs Reading, 50030 storms up Whiteball, 50012 on Aberdeen - Penzance express, 50020 at Okehampton, an astounding soundtrack as 50029 attacks Bruton bank, 50016 under the semaphores at Exeter. Plus over 120 other sequences of pure English Electric class 50 nostalgia.
Thank you for sharing, brought back alot of memories, my earliest being 1979 -1982 seeing the u refurbished namers on the Paddington expresses
Well this is again fantastic stuff, back in the day when trains were real, what i would give for a 1985 summer Saturday in cornwall.. wouldn't give u a penny for one now
Great memories in great settings.
Class 50s my favourite loco had them all for haulage 🙂 great video
Thank you so much. Beautiful footage, and lovely clear sound of these sorely missed locos - evoking memories of those times when everyone in my family could recognise the sound of a 50. They used to set our neighbour’s car alarm off!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Whow, some brilliant footage & high quality, best I’ve seen of this class, great to see also Exeter signal box in some snippets, thanks for posting. Eddie 🤓
Glad you enjoyed it Edward.
The whole “tiny home” trend? An acre of land in the countryside, living in a Class 50 😉💪✅
I know your plums are pumping fellas. ❤
That horn sound at 1:11:01 is just unreal! lol
cut out the music
That was then: put up with it. You're lucky I can be bothered to share this programme for nothing.
