  • It's hard to put into words how beautiful the views on this hiking trail are. Images and sounds help to convey the beauty of this area, but all this pales compared to what you feel when you are engulfed in the Italian Summer, with its buzzing life all around you, the waves of the sea crushing on the shoreline far below, and your will to dive deeper into the adventure.
Portofino is a small village on the Italian coastline, near the city of Genoa, in Northern Italy. It is located at the tip of the peninsula that bears the same name, and its centuries old churches, its castle, lighthouse, pastel colored houses - the list goes on - make it a top tourist destination in Liguria.
San Fruttuoso is an abbey located in a secluded cove, approximately one and a half hours away, to the west of Portofino. The origins of the Abbey date back to the 8th century, when Prospero, bishop of Tarragona, trying to escape the Arab invasion of Spain, took refuge in the bay by building a small church there to preserve the relics of the martyr Saint Fructuoso.
The place is internationally best known for the sunken statue of Christ of the Abyss, a bronze statue of the Saviour placed in the Mediterranean Sea, at approximately 17 metres (56 ft) depth. The waters surrounding the promontory of Portofino are a Marine Protected Area since 1999, making it a true paradise for divers.
After this experience, I'm left with the realisation that summer means cicadas buzzing everywhere, the horizon melting in a sea of blue, and people coming together to celebrate this beautiful world that we are lucky to be part of.
Enjoy the video! I hope it will convey a little of the magnificence of the hiking trail between Portofino and San Fruttuoso.
*the cave in which the video starts, is the perfect place to hide from the torrid weather. Outside it was like in the oven. Inside, you were like in the fridge. Not 100% sure, but this cave might be the start of a 400 meters long passage (1312 ft) called Galleria del Vitrale, which leads from Portofino, through the heart of the mountain, to coast above the sea. It is, unfortunately, "proprietà privata".
