  • Hello! I'm Erin of the kuriaknits channel. I am thrilled to be sharing about all things knitting, yarn, dyeing, and fibre arts. I could not believe my eyes when I walked into the yarn section of Value Village. I am always looking for premium materials like wool, mohair, silk, and alpaca at the thrift store. The cones, hanks, and ball of yarn I found this time are special. Use the hashtag #thriftedyarn - I would love to see all of your amazing thrift finds!!

    I live and knit in Southern Ontario with my husband and my terrier. The name kuriaknits comes from my last name - Kurian. Kurian has Indian and Syrian origins and I feel lucky every day that my husband shared it with me.

    I was just in Iceland and bought Alafosslopi in a few colors, including that beautiful dark green! I made a beanie out of it and I am so in love (enough that I made two more for family for Christmas presents). Icelandic sheep are double-coated, which makes the wool water repellent, so Alafosslopi is perfect for outerwear and hats according to the amazing Icelandic woman who owned the yarn store I visited! I can’t wait until it’s cold enough here to rock it.

    I too am a thrifty knitter. Most of my stash is secondhand, I have purchased sweaters for frogging, but mostly I have been lucky to find cones for $1 or $2. One big cone has been knit into two sweaters for me so far, and I believe there is enough for a third colourwork sweater. I'm currently working on the sleeves (two at a time) of a handspun sweater (I bought the handspun - about 420 g at my local knitting guilds garage sale for $2! the collar and the cuffs are/to be out of a precious skein of handspun I purchased at a national church conference 6 years ago!)

    I have knit 4 steeked cardigans out of my huge haul when I was in Iceland. I'd use the bulky Icelandic wool to knit a Daytripper Cardigan, or two.

    Welcome to TH-cam! Great to have another Canadian podcast! I never find anything of value and Value Village...LOL. You did great. I made a Lopi Icelandic sweater before you were born. I think they were all meant to go together in colour work. So cool! I just ordered cones from Holst Garn in Denmark. Those large cones are about 500metres. Lot of that wool blooms once washed. Great great haul! Rosie

      I keep looking at those Holst cones wondering if I should get them! I hope yours are wonderful.

    Drops (Garn studio) lets you select for Nordic designs. Many of them are older designs. Lopi also makes designs, including top-down pullovers with colorwork yokes. You wear a turtleneck under them. The .mohair would make a lovely Ranunculus, either alone or paired with a fingering weight yarn.

    Yay! A woman after my own heart. One of my favourite things to do is thrift but I LOVE it when I manage to thrift yarn. You have totally inspired me to use my day tomorrow to do exactly that. It's been a while.

      @@kuriaknits Well bloody hell lovely! You were definitely a good luck charm for me. 50 balls of yarn (wool, mohair, alpaca & cotton) for $37 and half a dozen bolts of fabric for $3 each. Literally the BIGGEST haul I've ever had in one day and from one op shop. 3 of our charity shops were devastated by recently flooding so I'm so grateful that this one was ok. Now I'm off to do my very own thrift haul video

    Great haul. They are beautiful. I would probably take the cones and make about 400 yard skeins, tie them and soak them in wool wash. Especially not knowing where they’ve been. I’ve never been lucky enough to find anything like that. Great finds!

    • @kuriaknits
      @kuriaknits  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great idea. If I had the patience I would probably do that too haha. They will get a good soak when knitted up I think.

    I was buying yarn at thrift stores until I bought some that had been chewed up by moths. The yarn was a wool blend. One skein was fine, the other was too damaged to use. Chewed up about every 12 inches.

    Erin, I’m a wee bit jealous of your yarn haul! When I go to Valley Village here in Peterborough, I’ve only seen acrylic yarn! I look forward to hearing about your plans for these beauties😊

    Late to the show. The Lopi yarn makes terrific felted clogs. I made several pairs as Christmas gifts. Try it!

      I don't know if clogs are my thing but maybe some felted slippers would be nice! Good idea on the felting.
